1 Qeclication . . 1 The class of 1956 lovingly dedicates their First Lady to Miss Garnet Thompson. , In an ungraded country school near Findlay, Miss Thompsonf started her education. To enter high school one had to pass the Boxwell test, given at the county seat. This was followed by a college preparatory course at Findlay Academy. Miss Thompson graduated from Findlay College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and Otterbein College with a Master of Arts Degree. She did post graduate work at the universities of Columbia, New York, Chicago, Toledo, and Ohio State. Her teaching career took her to North Baltimore, Wapakoneta, and Marion in Ohio, Richmond and Elkhart in Indiana. Endearing love for and devotion to her mother and father have been exemplified by Miss Thompson in the beauty of the hundreds of colorful tulips which enhance the portals of her church. Each year they serve as a living tribute to her parent's memory. Her hobbies are many and varied. Spare time is partly occupied with an interest in period furniture and antiques. Traveling in the United States and Canada has been extensive. During a year at Rike's, Dayton, Miss Thompson was promoted from salesperson to teaching salesmanship. This was partially due to her won- derful spirit of cooperation, and the kind and helpful attitude she expresses. Miss Thompson is always ready to do her part in any project. Toledo welcomed her in 1924. She taught continuation classes at old Woodward High School. When the new Woodward was built, Miss Thomp- son remained at the old building. She started a retail selling class with one student, Joe Bristoll. Joe brought in six friends. The numbers grew so that when Macomber was started and the boys moved, one hundred-sixty girls were left with no place to go. Parents, the American Federation of Teachers, and women teachers in the vocational field worked tirelessly until they gained enough power and government help to build a girl's school. Miss Thompson has shown both sympathy and understanding for the younger generation. Through her thought of others, she established the Memorial Book Shelf in Whitney's library to commemorate the memory of the dear deceased of faculty and friends. Thus, Whitney was born. Work, tears, and sweat make Whitney what it is-it didn't just grow like Topsy. We honor Miss Thompson as one of the pioneers.
