The class of 1939 was the first work in the newly organized Whitney School. This class of 1940 is the receive diplomas in the new building. The class of 1941 will be the first to have received all of their preparation in the new organization. Education as well as time marches on! FIRST LADIES to complete the Vocational High first group to The Hfirst ladyu is always in the public eye. The first ladies to leave this school and enter the world of employment will be no exception. The wage earning woman of today must stand or fall on the quality of favors because ance as a wage a par with her of the women's have been made the product which she contributes. She can ask no of sex as did her sister of by-gone decades. Accept earner and legislation are tending to place her upon fellow male workers. However, a study of the history movement shows that gains for women in modern society slowly and with great sacrifice on the part of the leaders who have sponsored them. These leaders were the real first ladies. There was a first lady to sponsor votes for women: a first lady to carry the case of equal property rights to the courts: a first lady to establish home-making classes for girls: a first lady to en ter college and start co-educational classes. This year saw the re tirement of Anna Lalor Burdick, the first lady in the United States Office of Education, whose duty it was to encourage the establish ment of trade and industrial education for women. As education and time march on, tion in 1917 has been but a passing moment. her appointment to the United States Office of Educa But these twenty-two years have made possible such education as this class of 1940 has leading out. May the into profitable fields with Ellen M. H. Gates nMyself must cross the bridge that sways With half its timbers gone Ere I can call Make haste! Come on! Come on!H received. In the root sense, education means education of this class lead each member out of endeavor! May each member be able to say to the students who follow her, to him who stays, Ethel Wooden, Principal -13-
