Mr. Doug Kretchmar was the new football coach at Harrah High School this year. He brought with him plenty of enthusiasm, spirit, and new ideas. Coach Kretchmar had several ideas to in- crease school spirit. One of these was a car decoration contest. The best decorated car would be allowed to stuff as many people in the car as possible, and everyone in it would get free admission to the game. Another very popular idea was the mystery student. The tenth person to say Beat Blackwell! or whoever Harrah was playing that night would receive a prize. As a result of these ideas, spirit was increased and team morale was boosted. Coach Kretchmar's philosophy was, High school should be educational as well as enjoyable, and we tried to relate this concept in the football coaching that we did. Mr. Kretchmar and coaches tried to stress the positive aspects of the player's abilities and not the negative ones. They also treated every age level as an adult, and everyone on the team got along well with each other. Mr. Kretchmar said, During the beginning of the year l found it easier to call plays from the press box. The reason for this was because one could see the entire playing field. This procedure was beneficial to both offensive and defensive sides. As players began to settle in their positions, the coaches became more accustomed to the player's abilities to perform the plays they called. The coaches found it more to their benefit and the players to coach from the sidelines after the preliminaries of the season began. Mr. Kretchmar was raised in Medford, Oklahoma where he attended Medford High School. ln 1976 he graduated from the University of Oklahoma and later attended Central State University where he received his Master's Degree in education. Organizations f 87 Q59 . , A ec Sci Cheerleaders Take Top Awards The 1984-85 year was one of many ac- complishments for the cheerleading squad. The cheerleaders attended a Universal Cheerleaders camp at Tulsa University. At the camp the cheerleaders did very well, bringing home several superior rankings. The squad was named camp champions for the first time in Har- rah history. They also brought home a spirit stick and a Master Key to Spirit Award which was decided by a vote from all of the attending squads. The squad's championship win qualified them to compete at the regional level. They were in the Midwestern Region, which included all of Oklahoma and Northern Texas, and they brought home a third runner-up trophy. The cheerleaders truly had a prosperous year! National Honor Society Promotes Community Service Harrah's National Honor Society Chapter has been working on several community service projects this year. Their first project was to collect money for a donation to the Kevin Hopcus Scholarship Fund. They did this by hav- ing each member donate one dollar of earned money. Their next project was to sponsor a Career Night in order to acquaint members and their guests with different career alternatives. But the NHS was not all work and no play, they also attended a play, Carousel, earlier in the year. All of these activities, and the induction of new members in spring, keep the NHS busy year-long. Some made us laugh. Others made us cry. We'll always remember the activities of high school, but it's the people who made those activities so special. lt's the people who changed an ordinary, dull day into a day worth remembering. Winning at the football, basketball, and wrestling homecomings was one of the hap- piest memories of our school year. The festivities which occurred around each homecoming also made it a very memorable time. The Howdy Panther Dance, Football Dance, and Spring Dance will stay in our minds for a long time. inhibitions were taken away, and the freedom of expression took over. These dances were a way of relaxing and a way of having fun, they will always hold fond Cand funnyj remembrances for us. Their first year at Harrah High was a memorable one for freshmen. From feeling like aliens to finally feeling a part of the gang, being a freshman was a unique experience. Junior and Senior trips in May provided expectations throughout the year. The freedom these trips allowed made these outings very exciting. Sports played a dominant role in our school life. Whether it was the last second shot that did or didn't go in, or the football game won or lost in overtime, sports had an influence on all who participated or attended. The time during graduation was very hec- tic for the graduating seniors. Buying an- nouncements, being fitted for caps and gowns, and practicing for graduation were traditional activities for all seniors. Gradua- tion was a memory that made one both laugh and cry. For those who had earned the honor, Senior Week was very special. lt didn't mat- ter if all you did was sit at home and watch TV, you'll always remember what you did during Senior Week. Also, we can never forget the special teacher who really cared, or the terrible teacher who just never understood us. The work we did during school will play a very important part in the rest of our lives. Every teacher and class has contributed something to what we've learned. As we look back over the year, we find that we not only remember the exciting events, but also the ones that seemed mean- ingless at the time. For instance, we will not only remember the crowning of the queen or the prom, but we'll also remember when Mr. Reed said the morning announcements, or the food fight that Mr, Raglin never found out about. Memories encompass everything and last forever. 164 gsm is img . L is .st Q 'SX S P . .
