We opened our baseball season on August 22, with nineteen candidates reporting for practice After two weeks of practice we opened the season at Morral on Sept ember the sixth Trailing by three runs going into the sixth inning, Mickey Snyders double paved the way for a four run rally that saw us come from behind to win 6 to 5 On September the eleventh we played our first league game at home against Wharton Dean Waggy carried a big stick for the home club banging out a double and triple Conrad Walcutt put in his peek performance of the year striking out seventeen Wharton batters in six innings Our top performance of the se son was against lcCutchenville on Sept ember 22 The game was an extra inning affair in which we scored four times in the eight to win Craig Swiharts diving so mersolting catch in the eight inning cut short a McCutchenville rally We won our third league game and our fourth game of the season against Marseilles on September 25 Dwight Shumate carried the big stick for the home club, connecting for three hits Robert Smith slapped a double and triple and Bob Hawk helped the home teams cause with a bases loaded single Buzz Swihart turned in a fine defensive job at shortstop We won handily going away 15 to 6 Our first loss of the season was at the hands of Nevada on their field September 29 Walcutt held the opposition well in check but we were able to collect only two hits They scored in the fourth inning to defeat us 1 to O Our final home game of the season was against Green Camp on October 2 We put on our biggest rally of the season in the sixth inning, scoring eight runs to come from behind to win the free scoring game 14 to 10 Dwight Shumate connected for the only Harpster homer of the season in the a bases loaded single in the big inning On a cold rainy October the 6th we lost our ch nce to gain a berth in the district baseball tourney by losing to winless Salem 8 to 4 A ad first inning proved our downfall Max Walters our leading hitter singled with the bases loaded, but we were unable to overcome the big first inning lead We closed the season on October the 9th against powerful Sycamore Roger Criswell our dependable catcher turned in a fine defensive performance even though we lost by a score of 10 to O The leading hitters for the season were Max Walters and Dwight Shumate who finished the season at a 320 clip Max Walters also led in the runs batted in with 8 and the most hits 8 Dwight scored the most runs 8 Zane Cox was the leading fielder handling 37 chances without an error for a lOOO average Conrad Walcutt, our regular pitcher averaged 9 2 strike outs per game and had a earned run average of 1 76 Although we ended up in a tie for third place we feel that we gained some prestige by defeating both Morral and Green Camp The winner and runners up respectively in Marion County big inning. Zane Cox scored three times for Harpster. Ed Jury whacked U . b
