This year ' s MILE- STONES is dedicated to such a person. Mrs. Partee is sensitive, understanding, and well-in- formed as well as talented in the world of art. Her artistic zeal extends beyond her classroom as shown by her promotion of many projects not sponsored by the Art Department. Mrs. Partee ' s helpful encouragement spurs her students to probe more deeply into the field of art. Because Mrs. Partee gives her time so unselfishly to help all Harpeth Hall girls, we would like to recognize her efforts in MILESTONES 1972. w ■ Harpeth Hall is . . . that one hour at lunch when you have time to be exactly what you are— A NUT! . . . learning to work together on a hockey field as well as in a classroom. . . . waiting. It may be for the bell to ring or for your hook-up or for a college acceptance. . Monday, when blah is the only word for it . . alive at Christmas. Snow and special projects keep everyone cheerful and in the holiday spirit. a school for refined young ladies. FACULTY MISS McMURRY HEADMISTRESS We didn ' t deserve to find some- one who could give her own special touch to everything in just one year. Well, we found her anyway; she ' s called Miss McMurry. Just lucky, I guess. This is a quote from the 1964 MILESTONES. After only one year those girls realized that they had found a truly unusual and capable person to become the new Head- mistress. Now, seven years later, she is still as refreshing and full of innovations and ideas as she was when she first arrived at Harpeth Hall. The 1972 MILESTONES wishes to say: we ' re not just lucky, we ' re very, very, very lucky. MISS FESSEY DIRECTOR OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOL As a new student entering Harpeth Hall one makes many new friends. Among these new acquaintances is Miss Fessey, Director of the Middle School. As sponsor of the Middle School Council, Miss Fessey guides the students wisely during their three years there. She listens to the prob- lems and suggestions sympathetically and in an understanding way. Because of her kind and helpful manner, Miss Fessey con- tributes greatly to the lives of all Harpeth Hall girls. MISS PENNY COUNSELOR To the Freshmen and Sophomores at Harpeth Hall, Miss Penny is an elusive figure whom they hope to get to know. For the Juniors and Seniors, Miss Penny acts as a mediator between colleges and students. Also her individual counseling helps each student to solve personal and school-related problems. To the Student Council she is a fearless leader who copes with their prob- lems every Tuesday during lunch. As for the Annual Staff, her wit and sound advice help them to cope with old problems again and again and again. . . . MORAN Sponsor 28 MARNIE SHERIDAN 1954-1972 When last we met, there was among us Laughing-eyed, one who stood on tiptoe to meet life. One who sought for answers, meaning, every- where. That ' s the way it ' s always been was not enough to slake her thirst For knowing why. Yet, told the story of a lonely man, She was not ashamed to cry. Because, I guess, there were times — And that right often — When she was lonely; Her kind of people always are. We who live in black and white (not living color) Saw how, Ophelia-like, with flowers, she reached too far. But a man ' s reach should exceed his grasp, The poet said, Or what ' s a heaven for? Always now for us — the laughing-eyed, the tender, slender girl Keeping time to the music that she hears — And we do not weep for her, whom we have loved, But rejoice that she has lived. — Mrs. Alfred Overholser 29 PAULA If you have not met Paula Rippon, the New- Zealand A.F.S. student this year, you have missed something special. At first glance, she is a vivacious blonde with an interesting British accent. As you get to know her you find her to be a girl who finds time to play in spite of the fact that she is carrying an unusually full schedule at school, where she is a member of the Student Council and a Senior Class Cheerleader. Many Seniors also found her witty comments relaxing during the Senior Play. In ad- dition to her school work she sings in a choir and has a part-time job. We are grateful to the A.F.S. Club for giving us an opportunity to meet and know Paula. 30 Marjorie Beth Atkins Nancy Meredith Barnes .972 SENIORS Ellen Gertrude Brittain Virginia Carr Bym Elizabeth Landr ess Collins Lisa Lynn Comer Jane Elizabeth Berry Lisa Cowan 1972 SENIORS Deborah Joan Daughtery Deborah Ann Denson Mary Leslie Doster Emily Gay Duvier Mary Louise Elam ■ Catherine Clark Ellis Dorothy Jean Diveley 32 Deborah Gail Feustel 1972 SENIORS Sabele Foster Adelaide Bellan Fowler ' Rachael Candace Garrison Mary Lea Gibson Mimi Dean Grant Nancy Ruth Griffith Cathy Anne Frierson 33 Emily Olympo Henry Lucinda Jane Hibbett Alice Angela Hinton 1972 SENIORS Cynthia Ann Hunt Margaret Allison lames Mirita Clark Johnston Betty Jane Keeling Sallie McKay Huggins 34 Mary Palmer Kelley 1972 SENIOR! This fall they devised an exciting and different orientation for incoming Freshmen. The annual Christmas Dance is the Student Council ' s contribution to the advancement of a Harpeth Hall girl ' s social life. The Student Council also helps to support a Korean orphanage. The All-Club Picnic, which is one of the concluding events of the year, is a function of the Student Council. Through the efforts of each hardworking girl, the Student Council helps to bridge the gap between the students and the school. Seated: S. Foster. Standing: Miss Penny, C. Pearson, C. Hunt. This year they have determined a dress code that is accept- able to both students and teachers. They have brought many desirable changes to Harpeth Hall including a new coke machine in the cafeteria. They have also worked diligently to make the exchange program between Harpeth Hall and Peabody a success. The Student-Faculty committee offers an excellent opportunity for discussion of suggestions, concerns, and changes affecting school life. Seated: C. Pearson, C. Hunt, S. Foster, S. Sumner. To the surprise of a dedicated sponsor, Miss Penny, this task is accomplished between the eating and dieting and giggling and crying at the Friday afternoon gatherings. The members of the staff attempt to make the yearbook repre- sentative of all aspects of school life. We hope that our enjoyment in working on this annual will be reflected in the pages of MILESTONES 1972. CHEERLEADERS 124 HONORS Celeste Gray, Eighth Grade Page; Mary Phil Hamilton, Sixth Grade Crown Bearer; Tara Crenshaw, Freshman Maid; Ginger Byrn, Senior Maid; Holly Thome, Sophomore Maid; Carrie Griscom, Junior Maid; Emmie Dillon, Seventh Grade Page. LADY OF THE HALL Each year the student body chooses a Senior who, to them, represents the highest ideals of our school. This girl is named Lady of the Hall. She and her Court, a group of girls also representing the highest goals of Harpeth Hall, are presented at an annual ceremony held in their honor. No girl deserved the honor any more than did Sabele Foster, this year ' s Student Council President. Attending her in the cere- mony were the Senior Maid, Ginger Byrn; the Junior Maid, Carrie Griscom; the Sophomore Maid, Holly Thome; and the Freshman Maid, Tara Crenshaw. Announcing these girls were the Eighth Grade Page, Celeste Gray, and the Seventh Grade Page, Emmie Dillon. Representing the Sixth Grade was Mary Phil Hamilton, the Crown Bearer. The Flower Girls were Amy Harvey and Wende Hall. These young ladies have most assuredly displayed the qualities that a Harpeth Hall lady should possess. 126 At Right: Sabele Foster, Lady of the Hall, and Wende Hall. Not Pictured: Amy Harvey, Flower Girl. CITIZENSHIP BRACELET The Citizenship Bracelet is presented to the senior who has earned the highest num- ber of citizenship points during her four years at Harpeth Hall. This year Cindy Hunt received the Bracelet. Cindy has shown her devotion to Harpeth Hall by assuming an active role in her club, her class, and the Student Council. She is a warm, vivacious person who has given much of herself to the school in her four years. All the students respect Cindy and are glad that she received this award for her outstanding achievements in citizenship. 128 KATIE WRAY AWARD The Katie Wray Award is one of the greatest honors that a Harpeth Hall girl can receive. The recipient of this award has the highest grade point average in her graduat- ing class during her four years at Harpeth Hall. This year Beth Collins was the recipient of the award. Beth not only had the highest average in her graduating class but she also had the highest average that any graduate of Harpeth Hall has ever attained. We are all extremely proud of Beth not only for her scholastic ability but also for her excellent citizenship, leadership, and athletic ability. Beth has most certainly shown herself to be an outstanding Harpeth Hall student. 129 Commendees: Alice Hinton, Kim Sumner, Gray Oliver, Betsy Sanford, Floy Oliver. NATIONAL MERIT AWARDS This year, three Seniors were selected as National Merit Semifinalists, which placed them in the top one percent of the nation ' s Seniors. Five others, in the top two percent, were chosen as Commendees. Early this spring, we were in- formed that the three girls chosen as Semi- finalists were now approved as Finalists. We are truly proud of these girls. Finalists: Beth Collins and Shannon Stoney. DANCE 135 GEORGE WASHINGTON ' S BIRTHDAY In this day and age, how many people celebrate George Washington ' s birthday? At Harpeth Hall, we still do. Troops of soldiers, bands of sailors, and distinguished ladies and gentlemen of President Washington ' s time are present at his annual birthday ball. The gymnasium is packed with people as they gather to catch a glimpse of Revolutionary times as performed by the Freshman Class. Each year a few surprises spring up; for example, a Hole in the Wall might be lost or a soldier might be left behind and later court martialed. Nevertheless, this tradition is one of the fun times at Harpeth Hall that we remember. 136 Laura Whitson Lee-Lee Bright GEORGE AND MARTHA WASHINGTON 137 SENIOR PLAY How do you solve a problem like the Seniors? . . . You are what you do, not what you think or say.  JUNIOR-SENIOR DAY Harpeth Hall ' s annual Junior-Senior Day arrived with a splash this year, in more ways than one. The Seniors, dressed as little girls, were notoriously known for their buckets of water and the Juniors, disguised as little boys, for their squirt guns. After school the classes competed in certain athletic events such as tennis, badminton, archery, and base- ball. The Seniors managed to win, but both classes had a tremendous amount of fun, and class spirit was at its highest. After the baseball game the students had a picnic to celebrate a truly delightful day. 140 ALL CLUB PICNIC Each year the students and faculty gather on the lawn in front of Souby Hall to recognize outstanding members of the student body. One of the highlights of this year ' s All Club Picnic was the singing of the club songs. The Triads won the award for the best song. Various other awards were presented in academics, athletics, and citizenship. The Aristons won the award for the best citizenship among the clubs, and the Angkors won the athletic trophy. Un- invited guests to the picnic were several thousand locusts who, we hope, will not be with us for another thirteen years. T MIDDLE SCHOOL HONOR DAY Girls who graduate from the eighth grade at Harpeth Hall are recognized on Middle School Honor Day. Awards are presented to clubs and individuals in the areas of citizenship and scholarship. When the eighth grade girls receive their certificates, it not only marks the end of their Middle School days but also their en- trance into the Upper School as the class of 76. y I am tifi 142 SOPHOMORE PLAY Each year the Sophomore Class presents a play in honor of the Lady of the Hall and her attendants. This year the play, Alice in Wonderland, directed by Mrs. Williams, was adorable. When Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum twinkled across the stage, the audience roared with laughter. The other characters were equally as captivating, making the play a complete success. 143 SENIOR BANQUET AND STEP SINGING The Senior Banquet and Step-Singing are tra- ditions — events of the last week-end at Harpeth Hall for the graduating class and preludes for the suc- ceeding class. The old gather once more before turning over their responsibilities to the new — a time of remembrance and of anticipation. 144 GRADUATION White dresses, red roses, sentimental tears, happy- smiles — these are the things that we shall remember. Graduation is both a time of reflection on years past and a time of looking ahead. Our class has attained a special wholeness and unity through cooperation and interde- pendence. After four years filled with both triumphs and disappointments, we graduate from Harpeth Hall pre- pared to face other challenges whose demands are un- known to us. Whatever the challenge, we must meet it with confidence in ourselves. IP (I i ' I FOR THE CLASS OF 72 Our time is approaching And we will come to a fork in the road A nd we ' ll have to go separate ways. We started out as little children; We had dreamers and realists and pessimists, And maybe there was an optimist among us, But she never spoke up. It ' s funny how we found love through death — God knows we aren ' t angels; Most of the time we are just hopeless , But now we have a chance And we ' re going to make the most of it. No one ever realized that we are just searching, Not until tragedy touched us, And that pain is what will unite us. We are all sisters And children of God. She was our sister, And the love for her overflows. Her search has ended, But ours is just beginning, And thinking of that road makes us weary. But we can help each other And we can help every person that we meet By knowing that we have love inside of us And that we can give that love freely. A beautiful wild flower began to bloom, But its life was ended. We have seeds to plant And there are flowers that will grow and blossom.
