DEDICATION Attention . . . dress right! This may seem like a mihtary command, but it is really Miss Patty keeping us in order. Throughout her years at Harpeth Hall, Miss Patty Chadwell has devoted much time and effort to a job that we seldom realize is a very difficult one. We rarely recognize the fact that it is necessary to be physically as well as mentally active. Because of her concern, Miss Patty sees that the standards of our athletic program are comparable to those of our academic program. As director of all athletics on the Harpeth Hall campus and sponsor of the Athletic Association, Miss Patty comes in contact with every student at Harpeth Hall at one time or another. Because everyone knows of Miss Patty ' s never-ending interest in the well-being of each girl, we proudly dedicate the 1971 Milestones to MISS PATTY. MISS McMURRY HEADMISTRESS Miss McMurry is many things. She is a charming lady, a gracious hostess, a smart dresser, and the Headmistress of Harpeth Hall School. This may sound like a remark- able combinatipn, but it has proved very effective and has earned Miss McMurry the respect and admiration of the entire student body. Sam ' s personal interest in each student begins before the student enters Harpeth Hall and continues beyond graduation. She has recog- nized the desires of the students with the formation of new courses such as Sociology and new organizations such as the Service Clubs. Her understanding of students and faculty has led to the formation of the Student- Faculty Committee. The longer one knows Miss Mc- Murry, the more one realizes that our Headmistress has a many-faceted personality. 20 MISS FESSEY DIRECTOR OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOL Since the founding of the Middle School in 1968, we have all seen a familiar figure walking up and down the halls, checking on classes, and cheerfully leaning over the Dutch doors. This person is the Middle School ' s outstanding Director, Miss Polly Fessey. She has been a wonderful example of kindness, understanding, and leadership to everyone at Harpeth Hall. We hope she will continue with us at our Middle School for many years to come. MISS MOUNTFORT COUNSELOR One person that everyone gets to know is Miss Pene- lope Mountfort or Miss Penny. As one of the most ver- satile figures of the school. Miss Penny is a biology teacher, sponsor of the Milestones, and college coun- selor. In her spare time, she also tutors! One can almost always see her flitting through the halls with a camera in hand or filling out transcripts in her office. Miss Penny plays a vital part in every student ' s life, and we are all indebted to her. ENGLISH Rebecca R. Butler English. Manely Ramirez-Abella, Harpeth Hall ' s new American Field Service student, possesses all of these qualities. But Manely does not only participate in projects at Harpeth Hall, she is also involved in many other Nashville activities. She is in Junior Achievement, she works as a volunteer at General Hospital, and she speaks to many schools about her country, Argentina. Manely ' s visit has not only broadened her experience but has also widened the horizons of many Harpeth Hall students. 48 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS President CINDY HUNT Vice-President NANCY GRIFFITH Secretary SUSAN SMITH Treasurer MIMI GRANT Athletic Manager GRAY OLIVER Chaplain LOUISE SHARP Sergeant-at-Arms JANIE HIBBETT Sponsor MRS. Mem- bers of the Harpeth Hall Student Council hold such a position. In addition to enforcing the rules and regulations, these girls are responsive to the desires of the students. Two innovations this year were the Christmas Dance in which the Seniors were presented and the revision of the Honor Code. The Student Council also sponsors the Orien- tation for new students and Personality of the Month. Harpeth Hall can be proud of its efficient school govern- ment. So far, it has been very effective in recognizing the needs of individuals in that students can personally present their idea for the betterment of Harpeth Hall. One of the major changes this year was in the dress code; stu- dents were allowed to wear pantsuits to school for the first time. We all hope that the Student-Faculty Committee will continue to be as effective as it was this year. Sitting: Mrs. Griffin, Beth Lewis, Mrs. Nelson. This group is composed of Juniors and Seniors who have maintained at least a B average in all of their academic subjects. One of the main responsibilities of the Honor Society is to plan the Wednesday morning chapel services. This year the stu- dents were able to participate in many of the chapels, and several were devoted mainly to music. The Honor Society has contributed a great deal to Harpeth Hall this year. Although the job is somewhat difficult, the editors and the staff still manage to have a good time doing it. Known for her idiosyncrasies, each member adds to the general hilarity and confusion of the Friday after- noon meetings. With the help of Miss Penny and the hindrance of the ghost, the staff has once again suc- ceeded in producing a memento of the school year. The members of the annual staff hope that it enable s you to relive the experiences of the past year. Its members are interested in helping the American Red Cross in any way that they can. Thus, they are involved in many community service projects such as making tray favors for hospitals, sponsoring a drive to write letters to Hanoi asking for the release of American prisoners, and participating in the Nashville School Blood Drive. The Red Cross certainly contributes much to both Harpeth Hall and the community. PEACE CORPS One of the service clubs that is concerned primarily with raising money is the Peace Corps. Under the leadership of Rose Marie Pinder, this organi zation is striving to raise money which may be used to build a school in a South American country. The Peace Corps does this by having bake sales, car washes, contests, and selling various items. The goal is one thousand dollars. The members of the Peace Corps have certainly worked hard and will soon obtain their goal. The AFS does this through selling raffle tickets and sponsoring the AFS Christ- mas Around the World. We are looking forward to next year ' s AFS student. Under the direction of Terry Holcomb and Elizabeth Wil- liams, the performance drew crowds to the auditorium both nights. With such a productive beginning, the Drama Club should prove to be an important part of the life at Harpeth Hall. PENSTAFF Penstaff, the literary club of Harpeth Hall, has taken on a new job this year. Besides publishing Hallmarks, it has contributed to the production of Milestones. Examples of the members ' creativity can be found throughout this year ' s edition of the annual. In their yearly publication, Hallmarks, the original works of the other students are com- bined with those of the members of Penstaff. Penstaff offers the opportunity for students to express themselves. OFFICERS President ATHALIE WHITE Vice-President lO ANDERSON Secretary MARILYN BLACKMAN Sponsors MRS. STAMPS MRS. One of the many new groups that was formed this year is the newspaper staff. It has been received with great enthusiasm by the entire student body because the newspaper is another means of enabUng the student to express her own opinion. Four editions have been turned out with great success, each containing many features concerned with both school and com- munity activities. The newspaper was such a success this year and has raised such interest that, as a result, a journalism class is a prospect for the future. Thus, the newspaper staff has become a very important part of Harpeth Hall School. Often we can see in others what we believe to be representative of these standards and ideals. The Lady of the Hall and her Court are elected by their classmates as being girls who truly live up to all expectations. This year the Lady of the Hall was Beth Lewis, a girl who has demonstrated in many ways that she is worthy of this honor. The class representa- tives were Sallie King, Senior Maid; Cindy Hunt, Junior Maid; Susan Duvier, Sophomore Maid; and Helen Har ' an, Freshman Maid. For the Eighth Grade, Emily Perkins served as Herald; Karen Duvier was the Herald for the Seventh Grade. The Flower Girls, Robin Bigelow Ingram and Eileen Bowen Nebhut, added a sweet touch. At Lell: Beth Lewis, Lady of the Hall. i ' 4 125 ;v KATIE WRAY AWARD The Katie Wray Award is given to the senior with the highest grade point average for her four years. This year, Lisa Morrissey won the award. Besides her devotion to learning, she has been a leader in many as- pects of Harpeth Hall and has remained loyal to its ideals and standards. Lisa has earned the respect of every student at Harpeth Hall and is well deserving of this award. 126 CITIZENSHIP BRACELET The senior who has earned the greatest number of citizenship points in her four years at Harpeth Hall receives the Citizen- ship Bracelet. Sue Sadler has been awarded the bracelet this year. Sue has been out- standing in scholastics, athletics, and other treas of Harpeth Hall life. For what she has given to this school and to its students, we are proud to see her win this award. 127 NATIONAL MERIT AWARDS This year, when the resuhs of the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Tests were an- nounced, three members of the Senior Class were named National Merit Finalists. This means that they are in the top one percent of the na- tion ' s students. Four other Seniors qualified as Commendees, placing them in the top two per- cent of the nation ' s students. We are pleased to have these girls at Harpeth Hall School with us. Betsy Shapiro, Lisa Ivlorrissey. Not Pictured: Claire Brittain. The Juniors, dressed as mischievous httle boys armed with waterguns and pails, played games against the Seniors, dressed as angelic little girls with curls and teddy bears. In the afternoon a picnic was enjoyed by both classes, and the day was brought to a climax when Miss McMurry awarded the cup to the vic- torious Juniors. SENIOR PLAY Seniorosis? . . . With the help of Miss Patty, a group of new recruits becomes transformed into a drill team, lively sailors, and the graceful men and women of the minuet. The same format is followed every year, yet each class adds its own special style and touch which makes each one unique. This year the Freshmen displayed their talent in music by singing a war ballad and providing their own accompaniment for the minuet. We thank the Freshmen Class for contributing their part to the school year. •(.h- ' MIDDLE SCHOOL HONORS DAY Although the girls in the Middle School spend only two years there, they feel a great sense of pride and accomplishment when they are finally ready for the Upper School. On the Middle School Honors Day, the eighth grade girls receive their certificates and other awards, and start thinking ahead to the next four years. 142 ALL CLUB PICNIC THE SOPHOMORE PLAY v ' M One of the most entertaining events during the gradua- tion weekend is the Sophomore Play. This year, in honor of the Lady of the Hall and her Court, Mrs. Williams and the Sophomore Speech Class took everyone down the yellow brick road in a delightful version of The Wizard of Oz. With song and light humor, Dorothy and her friends gave to all an enchanting and enjoyable performance. SENIOR BANQUET AND STEP SINGING Two events of the grdduation weekend are the Senior Banquet and Step Singing. At the banquet, the Seniors are together as one and can relax for the last time before they start into the hectic schedule of the next few days. On Sunday the Seniors and Juniors sing their special songs, and the Senior Class ' passes on all responsibilities and privileges to the upcoming Senior Class.
