Poll FE55£y Har eth +Hall |choo Nashville , Tennessee DEDICATION What can we answer in that first frustrating moment when we ask. ourselves what we are doing at Harpeth Hall? What do we do when we realize that all the clubs and activities have brought us no closer to discovering our own identities? Can we stand alone within ourselves? Perhaps Harpeth Hall is giving us the chance to explore our inner beings. In a small school of four hundred girls one learns to understand and appreciate the needs and desires of others, and as we become more sen- sitive to people, we see more deeply into our own souls. This new awareness enables us to enrich our school by binding together its students, giving us our chance to bring meaning to our experience at Harpeth Hall. This year Milestones 1970 is dedicated to each individual student as she is learn- ing to relate to herself and those around her. Out of all the jostle, push, noise, and crowds we found laughter, excitement, gaiety — all the heady, rushing feel- ings of youth and new-found importance. The games, the plays, the clubs, all contributed to our spirit of together- ness. But there were other times . . . When the locker room laughter and hockey field shouts could not drown out our yearnings for something more . . . To get off to ourselves for a while ... Is anything for real? Is it all a show? Would anyone notice if I never came back? There is a new and special feeling when you first realize nat there are people who care. To discover common inter- sts, to share a joke, to play together, to participate in a ■reject . . . The happy feeling of realizing that there are thers like you who share your problems, interests, and mbitions . . . The thrill of discovering in a friend new ualities that you have never noticed before. To be to- other, to laugh, to talk, to argue. These are the ways in ' hich we can reach out and learn to communicate with thers . . . ' Mi mn i ■ 3 I 4 This year, all of us have realized that if Harpeth Hall is to be a relevant part of our lives, we need to put more of ourselves into it. Sometimes we are slow to admit just how much we really do care about the school. But there are too many times when selves touch and break the cool, distant exteriors we have put up, and we find ourselves giving instead of taking. At such times, it is impossible to ignore what Harpeth Hall means to every girl here. We have woven a rich tapestry of experiences in our time here. Perhaps, in the coming years, many parts will fade, but the strong threads of friendship will continue to hold the picture in our minds. The spirit of Harpeth Hall is not the blind support of one unit but the result of binding together what is unique in every girl here. What has each of us given? What can we answer? J 5 Si , ,_, -. ,v. r« ' « ' v ■ - •• fAcuurv And Classes Through the years, each class at Harpeth Hall becomes a meaningful unit as the student begins to realize that her class is more than just another organized group. She soon learns that the actions of every individual student contribute to the personality of her class and the achievements it comes to represent. The unique personality of each faculty member at Harpeth Hall is also instrumental in molding the character of each class through its effects on the individual student. Students find that the teachers have a genuine concern for helping every girl come to a deep awareness of not only the academic world, but of life, her own self, and her potentials. Our teachers are helping us learn to relate our own ideas with what we have learned, and through education they are giving us the means to communicate these ideas with others. Through mutual respect and cooperation, the characters of each class and of the faculty can be fused into one. MISS McMURRY HEADMISTRESS As Headmistress of Harpeth Hall, Miss McMurry makes her presence felt in all aspects of school life. Miss McMurry is not only concerned with the usual administra- tive responsibilities of running a busy school; she is also directly involved with the students themselves through her work with the Presidents ' Council. With her excellent rea- soning and guidance, Miss McMurry tries to give her ut- most consideration to the desires and needs of each student.  7 MISS MOUNTFORT COUNSELOR When a student enters Harpeth Hall, one of the first people she will meet is Penelope Mount- fort, that efficient and awe-inspiring individual who administers tests. Yet somewhere along the way, Miss Mountfort becomes Miss Penny, mis- chievous school photographer. Yet when one works closely with Miss Penny, either through her ac- tivities as college counselor, or as Student Council and Annual Staff sponsor, one sees that Miss Penny is even more than all this. She is a lady with an irrepressible spirit, who can be the most helpful, the most encouraging, the most fun; in short, the most of whatever is demanded of her at any moment. FACULTY AND STAFF MISS FESSEY MIDDLE SCHOOL DIRECTOR The Middle School is now finishing its second year of smooth operation, and it is becoming increasingly clear that much of the credit for its success should go to Miss Polly Fessey. Miss Fessey is known and respected by every Harpeth Hall student, from sev- enth grader to senior. Whether in her office or at a hockey game, Miss Fessey ' s abilities are apparent to all. Her wise and kind lead- ership will have a great effect in helping to guide and shape the character of Harpeth Hall for years to come. 18 Mrs. Band, Mrs. Coker, Mrs. Overholser, Mrs. Keys, Mrs. Poag, Mrs. Wentworth. The Middle School Council constantly strives to combine the ideas of the students with the ideals of the school. It has reached several of its major goals this year by revising the student regulations and sponsoring such activities as the Grandmothers ' Tea. The Council has continually demon- strated its ability to inaugurate ideas and mold them into reali- ties. The Happening is a monthly publication which has been relating current events to the Middle School student body for the past two years. Its goal is to keep each student well-i n- formed about school, class, and club activities. The staff mem- bers put much time and effort into making the newspaper a success, and we are all very proud of these reliable girls. They provide a way to channel interests into different fields, and when enthusiasm and sincerity are at the heart of each group, these clubs can be a stimulating part of every student ' s school life. It is in the organizations that we learn to coordinate what we want and what we need, and through such coordination we can contribute something meaningful both to the school and to ourselves. This year, the Student Council has been especially busy. Besides its regular projects, the Student Council has revised the dress code and sponsored a debate and student referendum on the subject of school uniforms. The Student Council continues to be the voice of Harpeth Hall, but without the support and respect of the students themselves, the Council would quickly lose all meaning. Bftfc. ■■■ ' R. Brown, K. The hours of work are often long and tedious, but the new friendships formed, the knowledge gained through working to- gether, and the end product of a year ' s work are judged well worth the effort. New members are chosen on a competitive basis, with those girls submitting the best entries being accepted for membership. The club meets on weekday afternoons to read their own works, as well as to discuss current films, records, and literature. In the fall, Pen- staff presents an assembly for the student body, and in the spring the girls publish Hallmarks, a collection of the best of the students ' literary efforts. We hope that the Penstaff Club ' s enthusiasm for creative writing will foster an equal excitement in each student at Harpeth Hall. To give the very best of oneself, even for one short afternoon, to forget all the petty differences in one moment of exhilaration, to want to do your best with every part of your soul, to share the joys of victory or be bound by the despair of defeat? Can these feelings ever be recalled? Our excitement may not last, but the facts that we have known the thrill of participation will make all the difference. HOCKEY Kneeling: B. Parrish, N. Berry, S. People are often just too busy to show their appreciation and admiration for those who deserve it. At Harpeth Hall, however, honors help provide the special recognition that outstanding girls merit, and each individual student can share the joy these girls have in being honored. Honors are not only for those who receive them; they are also for friends who share them. NATIONAL MERIT AWARDS Finalists — S. Andrews, D. Keenan, J. Crawford, B. Aydelott, G. Harris, L. Landrum, R. Steele, K. Grant. National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Tests are given every year to thousands of juniors throughout the entire country. Those girls who score among the top one percent of the nation ' s participants become National Merit Finalists and are eligible for scholarships. Those qualifying in the top two percent in the country are given Certificates of Commendation. When the test results were announced this fall, Harpeth Hall was honored to have eight girls in each cate- gory. These girls have proven themselves to be among the brightest students in the country, and we can all take pride in their achievement. Commendees — Seated: N. LeQuire, K. Vaughn, C. GrafF, L. Barton. Karen has truly earned this honor, for as Presi- dent of the Student Council this year, she not only demonstrated her ability as a leader, but she contributed a part of herself to the students and the school. 114 KATIE WRAY AWARD The Katie Wray Award is one of the highest honors that a student can receive while at Har- peth Hall. It is awarded to the senior who has the highest grade point average during her four high school years. This year, the award goes to Ginger Harris. We can all be proud of Ginger, for she has shown her individuality through her dedication to the highest ideals of learning and her capacity to share her en- thusiasm with others. 5 n6 LADY OF THE HALL AND Debbie Deen, Eighth Grade Herald; Emily Thompson, Sophomore Maid; Beth Diveley, Junior Maid; Kay Procter, Freshman Maid; Beth Tanner, Senior Maid; Dede Johnston, Seventh Grade Herald. At Left: Karen Vaughn, Lady of the Hall. Gayle Elam Smith, Flower Girl. Each year, the student body selects a small number of girls who they feel are representative of the ideals and standards of Harpeth Hall. These girls are the Lady of the Hall and her Court. This year the Lady of the Hall is Karen Vaughn, with Beth Tanner, Beth Diveley, Emily Thompson, and Kay Procter as the Attendants. The Heralds, representatives of the Middle School, are Debbie Deen and Dede Johnston. The Flower Girls are Beth Clark and Gayle Smith. The Lady of the Hall and her Court possess the qualities admired by the student body and are deserving of this honor. Elisabeth Jean Clark, Flower Girl. 7 £m x - — Special Cvemts What is the meaning that one can find in the special events at Harpeth Hall? Can they be more than mere obligations? Each girl must answer this question on her own terms, and each answer will be different. The Junior, Senior, and Sophomore Plays, George Washington ' s Birthday, Step-Singing — What are they? With the help of Mrs. Haynes, Mrs. Gregory, and Miss Chadwell, the freshmen are schooled in the arts of the minuet, the hornpipe, and in marching. This year Jodie Sartor was elected to portray George Washington, and Kathy Follin was Martha. The program was quite successful and helped to carry on one of Ward-Belmont ' s favorite traditions. 114 •5 SENIOR DAY One of the most exciting events at Har- peth Hall is the Junior-Senior Day com- petition. The Juniors dress up as little boys, and the Seniors portray little girls. After a day of various athletic events, a picnic-dinner is held at which Miss Mc- Murry awards a trophy to the class that has won the most events. This year, the trophy was won by the Seniors, but the spirit gained by both classes is worth more than any award. n6 SOPHOMORE PLAY Each year the sophomore speech class helps to end the school term on a happy note by presenting the Sophomore Play under the direction of Mrs. Williams. This year, the entire student body was delighted by the antics of Pooh and his forest friends a year ' s presentation of Winnie the Pooh. n 7 SENIOR BANQUET AND STEP SINGING Among the annual events of the school year are the traditional Senior Banquet and Step Singing. At the Senior Banquet, there is one last time for friends to talk and laugh together before separat- ing to go their different ways. At Step Singing, the Senior Class turns its duties over to the Junior Class and one last tribute is paid to the school. ' i— 118 MIDDLE SCHOOL HONORS DAY On this day, two years of work and achievement are recognized as the eighth grade students of the Middle School grad- uate. These two years have meant much to the girls graduating. Through both wo rk and good times they have gained new in- sight which will help them in the four years of new experiences which lie ahead. iiBiwi % JShS f m ¥■■ ' ■■ ■■ ' • ' ■ . ■-■ V: : ,-l- ' • 5 £ tag?f v GRADUATION The most beautiful event of the Harpeth Hall school year is the evening graduation. Here, the students, faculty, and parents can view together for the last time the girls who have become young women during their high school years . . . We are together, now, in our last moment of real touch here, with nothing to say but only to look. for one last memory that shall have to last for a long time. Sheri Anetea Just as our awareness of one another has ripened, we suddenly burst forth and are apart. Separate. We have been together, but as the last chords die, we leave to face new experiences alone. 3 SENIOR INDEX SUSAN TOY ANDREWS Triad— Junior Classical League 2, 3, 4; French Club 3, 4; Glee Club I, 2, 3, 4, Sergeant-at-Arms 4, Travel Group 2, 3, 4; Science Club 2, 3, 4; Drama Club 4; Honor Society 4, President 4; Presidents ' Council 4; Sophie Dobson Award, Academic I, 2, 3; National Merit Scholarship Finalist 4; Vanderbilt Math Contest, 4th place I, 8th place 2, 5th place 3; Eta Sigma Phi Latin Award 2.
