The Seniors this year have had the pri ilege of learning from such a person— Mrs. Over- holser. Mrs. Overholser is tuned in to what is happening and how it afiects her students. She is turned on by the great works in literature, and. in mingling the ideas of outstanding world authors with some inspirational thoughts of her own, she transmits to her students the value of stud ing world literature. Moreover, Mrs. Overholser is thoroughly alive with the enthusiasm and youthful energy which springs from her love for and dedication to her work. It is to this tuned in, turned on, and alive personality that we dedicate MILESTONES 1969. HEADMISTRESS When a Harpeth Hall girl thinks of Miss McMurry, she thinks of a concerned advisor, a wise organizer, and a gracious hostess. Miss McMurry acts as a mediator between the students and the Board of Trustees, as well as working with student leaders through her sponsorship of the Presi- dents ' Council. Because Miss McMurry is truly dedicated to bettering Harpeth Hall, her years here have .been ones of fresh ideas and favorable changes. DIRECTOR OF MIDDLE SCHOOL MISS FESSEY One of the most obvious changes that has taken place in the last few years is the founding of the new Middle School, and who else but Miss Fessey could have been chosen Director? If you are looking for someone who is always willing to help and organize, who is known for her sense of humor, and who fully understands girls, a natural choice is Polly Fessey. With her unusual abilities. Miss Fessey has brought vitality and enthusiasm to the Middle School. COUNSELOR MISS .MOUNTFORT How many people can claim that they know both sides of Miss Penny? If you look beyond her exterior of respon- sibility, dignity, and cool awareness, you will find a witty, eccentric, definitely undignified free spirit. We greatly ap- preciate her as college counselor, sponsor for the Student Council and Milestones, and as friend-at-large. 14 MATHEMATICS Sealed: Mrs. Abernathy, Mrs. Hardin, Miss Shaw. But also, this year, the responsible group of student representatives was besieged with innu- merable suggestions. These suggestions ranged from re- quests for new pencil sharpeners to additions to the school ' s curriculum. The Student Council handled these very well, making changes where possible and appropriate. The Stu- dent Council has certainly played a changing role in its effort to represent an increasingly concerned student body. REPRESENTATIVES Quinn. Buchanan. Meacham. Miss Mountfort. To achieve this goal, the club presents an annual fall assembly, this year featuring the Penstaff Coffee House, as well as publishing Hallmarks, the school literary magazine. Because entry into Penstaff is competi- tive and based on talent in creative writing, the members are always enthusiastic about their projects and eager to share their original ideas with others. ' 4i V 91 Honors 93 KATIE WRAY AWARD Mary Louise Linn The Katie Wray Award is given to the girl who has maintained the highest four-year scholastic average. Everyone agrees that there could be no better person than Mary Louise Linn to receive this honor. But Mary Louise is more than the typical valedictorian. Her sin- cerity and concern for others have gained her many friends who are proud to see Mary Louise earn this award. 94 CITIZENSHIP BRACELET Barbara Meacham The Citizenship Bracelet is awarded annually to the girl who has achieved the highest number of citizenship points in her four years at Harpeth Hall. Barbara Mea- cham is truly deserving of this award, not only because of her excellent leadership but also because of her kind- ness and sincerity— all of which have made her contribu- tion to Harpeth Hall very great. 95 ..tvr- .- Ji - • . . -i ' -rT • • ■ V ■Jt - m:M t K ' . LADY OF THE HALL AND HER COURT The Lady of the Hall and her Attendants are selected by their classmates as those girls who best represent the ideals of Harpeth Hall. Barbara Meacham was elected Lady of the Hall, and her Court was composed of Lucia Howard. Grace Paine, Sue Sadler, and Susan Shoulders. From the Middle School, Blair Scoville and Lee Lee Bright were Heralds. The fine qualities of these seven girls have won them respect and admiration at Harpeth Hall, and they will serve as excellent representatives of the school wherever they may be. The results of the examination taken last vear were an- nounced this fall, and we learned that two Seniors had placed among the top one percent of the nation ' s partici- pants. The eight students who placed in the top two percent of those who took part in the program were honored as Commendees. These competent girls should be congratu- lated. Silling: Schull. Duncan. This year ' s presentation of Alice in Wonderland helped end the school year on a lively and amusing note. io6 SENIOR BANQUET STEP SINGING The Senior Banquet gave the Seniors one last chance to laugh and talk together with poems and toasts before leaving Harpeth Hall. A few days after the banquet the Senior Class handed over both the responsibihties and the privileges of being the leaders of the school to the Class of 1970 at the Step Singing ceremonies. Following this last obligation, the Class of 1969 had only to prepare for graduation the next day. i GRADUATION Graduation. The cycle of change has brought us, still a little baffled at its swiftness, to that final point where childhood can no longer be our excuse. Tomorrow we must rise to face the new responsibilities of this change, leaving behind only a soft rose petal to mingle with the grasses that we wore down with our footsteps. 109 SENIOR INDEX KAREN KYLENE ALLBRIGHT Triad— Club Cheerleader 1; French Club 3. 4; Spanish Club 1, 2. 3, 4, President 4; Science Club 4; Glee Club 1. 2. 3. 4; Art Club 1, 2, 3; MILESTONES 4: Class Cheerleader 4. FAREWELL All changes are not welcome. This year we are losing four of the teachers who have contributed much to the character of Harpeth Hall. Will we ever forget the good-humored discipline of Ro ' s study halls, gracious Mrs. Eggleston ' s stories of Ancient History, Miss Ewing ' s calm explanations of Euclid, or Mrs. Frazer ' s Caesar and inspiring side advice? We see them go with a sense of loss, but with gratitude for their contribution to the spirit of Harpeth Hall.
