Carriages clattering on the streets of old Nashville often stopped at 143 North Spruce Street to deposit Southern daughters at Ward Seminary for Young Ladies. With the homes of Nashville in the background, Ward ' s basketball team in their bloomers and middy blouses prac- ticed in the late afternoon. One of the 137 holidays that Ward girls enjoyed was Halloween. These girls with their big paper bags, mus- taches, and cigars must be trying their hands at tricks and treats. In the spring a young Ward girl ' s fancy lightly turned to thoughts of excursions to the country, picnics, and clover chains.

Imagine having 54 school days in which to put together an annual! No wonder this IRIS staff is worn out after the annual has finally gone to press. Ward girls such as these members of the tennis club laid the foundation for our exceptional tennis record through the years. This Basket of ' American Beauties ' is a group of Ward seniors in the flower parade May 10, 1900. This Ward Seminary basketball varsity of 1907 was probably one of the very few girls ' teams in the country.
