lb anb eto Last fall as the annual staff leafed through a yellowed Ward ' s Seminary yearbook, The Iris, the idea for the Milestones of ' 62 was born. The staff quickly slipped from the jet age back to the year 1865. To an era of carriages rattling over cobblestone streets; to a time of laughing girls, in high-necked shirtwaists and sweeping skirts, who played and studied for the first time in a brick building on old North Spruce Street. The Civil War had ended, but Yankee soldiers still occupied Nashville and controlled the destiny of its 15,000 citizens. The year 1865 leading up to the November opening of Ward ' s was one of heartbreaking headlines! April 3, RICHMOND FALLS TO UNION TROOPS . . . April 9, LEE SURRENDERS TO GRANT AT APPOMATTOX . . . April 14, ABRAHAM LINCOLN AS- SASSINATED. . May 10, JEFFERSON DAVIS CAPTURED BY UNION CAVALRY ... May 26, GEN. E. KIRBY SMITH SUR- RENDERS LAST CONFEDERATE TROOPS . . . June 2, GEN. GRANT ANNOUNCES END OF WAR. Small wonder that few noticed the November item that marked the planting of the first mile- stone on the road to Harpeth Hall— DR. J. F. WARD ANNOUNCES THE OPENING OF WARD ' S SEMINARY. The Milestones staff can ' t share with you the excitement of pouring over Ward Seminary annuals at the State Library, of searching for ma- terial on Belmont College and Ward-Belmont, of photographing fa ' ded pictures, and of working frantically to sell enough ads to reproduce even a fraction of the material culled from the milestones marking the road to Harpeth Hall. But we hope that the Milestones of ' 62 will evoke in each Harpeth Hall student a new appreciation for the rich heritage of her school.

Carriages clattering on the streets of old Nashville often stopped at 143 North Spruce Street to deposit Southern daughters at Ward Seminary for Young Ladies. With the homes of Nashville in the background, Ward ' s basketball team in their bloomers and middy blouses prac- ticed in the late afternoon. One of the 137 holidays that Ward girls enjoyed was Halloween. These girls with their big paper bags, mus- taches, and cigars must be trying their hands at tricks and treats. In the spring a young Ward girl ' s fancy lightly turned to thoughts of excursions to the country, picnics, and clover chains.
