€ LASSES CLASS EVOLUTION From Ward ' s Seminary to Harpeth Hall, the road stretches across an expanse of change. But Dr. Ward ' s principle of maintaining high academic stan dards and of stressing moral character is still being upheld in our school. Ward ' s offered a full and thorough course of instruction, embracing academic and collegiate work. Gas lights burned late as students poured over books — English literature, French, Latin, Greek, moral philos- ophy, art criticism, elocution, and penmanship. The Milestones ' staff read with envy that Ward ' s opened in November and closed in May — a term dotted with holidays when Ward girls shed their maroon or buff colored uniforms for hoop skirts and merrymaking! Imagine a school year of 52 scholastic days! But the staff felt at home to find that Ward ' s students never chewed gum, always cultivated perfect manners, and treated their teachers with respect and courtesy. By 1890 they were competing in these respects with students of the newly opened Belmont College, housed in the Belmont mansion on the 200 acre Acklen estate. Pictured at the right is a Belmont class and its instruc- tor. The building behind them was originally a two story bear house, part of the Belmont Estate zoo. This oc- tagonal building was designed by the Italian architect who designed the Belmont mansion, which was said to be unsurpassed by any other in the South. Later owners of the estate thought the bear house of such architectural beauty that they used it for a tea house. It had various uses up into Ward-Belmont days. 14
