In the many campus organizations the Angkor Club was well represented. Irene Jackson was president of the Honor Society, and Elizabeth Ewing and Mary Cornelius were mem- bers. Tish Fort was vice-president of the Student Council; officers of the Athletic Association included Barbara Massey and Linda Williams. Elizabeth EV ing, Irene Jackson, Mary Cornelius, and Bersy Rhett Ball were members of Penstaff. Officers of the Art Club were Gretchen Hahn and Anne Harrison; Carole Minton was Glee Club president. Irene Jackson was also business manager of MILESTONES, and Cynthia Hastings, Betsy Rhett Ball, and Mary Cornelius were on the staff. Angkor officers in the language department in- cluded Ashley Whitsitt, Spanish Club president, and Betsy Rhett Ball, president of the Junior Classical League. Presi- dent of the Science Club was Cynthia Hastings. Julia Fort was freshman class president. In addition to their high idea ' s of citizenship and scholar- ship, the Angkors exhibited enthusiastic sportsmanship by participating actively in the entire sports program. For those wearing the blue and white, 1955-1956 was in- deed full of success. ANGKOR CLUB ARISTON CLUB The year 1955-1956 has been full of victories for the Aris- ton Club. Each girl, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Mann and the leadership of Mary Lindsay Polk, worked with all her talents to make the club outstanding. Such girls as Mag Teas, Merilyn Hovey, Sally Smith, and Nancy Hedrick led their club to win on the athletic field. The Aristons had many members in the school clubs. Pam Parker and Betty Caldwel represented the club in the Honor Society, and Linda Chris tie, Nancy Harris, Lillian Campbell, and Betty Caldwell held membership in Penstaff. In school elections the gold and white banner waved high The Aristons were Well represented in school offices by Pa Spickard, sophomore class president; Peggy Reynolds, junioi class president; Pam Parker, senior class president; Bett Caldwell. Student Council secretary; and Merilyn Hovey Athletic Association president. Betsy Gwynn, Ruth Early, Caro Ledyard, Martha Prueher, Carol Parker, Sally Smith, Gretchen Gardner, Lynn Voss, and Cornelia Carrier, all Ariston members, held various offices in their respective classes. Thus in athletics, scholarship, and citizenship the Ariston Club marched forward to complete a successful year. Shwab and Miss Mims, the Eccowasin Club completed nother victorious year. The ardent support of the members fh ' iie to success in athletics, scholar- carried the green and ship, and citizenship. On the hockey field, Lccowasins excelled ii in the gym, and on the tennis courts, sportsmanship and athletic ability. Among the club ' s capable athletes were Frances Horn, Ann Shull, and Caroline Boyd. Cheering them on to victory were Betsy Stengel, Peggy Ann McKeand, Helen Porter, and Alva Herbert. Even though the score did not always show them on top, they were never truly defeated. Ranking high in scholarship were such brainy gals as Martha Parrent and Ann Tirrell. Nancy Mcintosh, Polly Akin, and Betsy Lowe represented the club in Penstaff. The French Club, Honor Society, Science Club, and Latin Club recognized the leadership ability of Eccowasins and chose Susan McKeand, Lynda Gillum, Betty Bouchard, and Evie Davis to be among their officers. Club members holding class offices were Judy Maddox, Polly Akin, and Gale Green- leaf. Each and every girl contributed and co-operated to give the Eccowasin Club a feeling of unity and pride. ECCOWASIN CLUB TRIAD CLUB Under the leadership of Linda Lackey and with the whole- hearted support of Miss Mountfort, the Triad Club made the year a memorable one. Each member strove to keep her club ' s rating high in citizensh|p i scho ' arship, and athletic aclivities. The Triads had their eyes on the citizenship and scholarship awards. Adding citizenship points to their club were Carolyn Carmichael, president of the Student Council, June McCoy, president of Penstaff, and Nancy Hard-on, editor of the MILESTONES. Two members served as officers in the Hono: Society, and Betty Daniel was Pontifex Maximus of the Junior Classical League. Representing the red and white scholasti- cally were Patsy Griffin, Kathy Starr, Helen Riddle, Mary Trabue, and Mary Ann Braden. Betty Tippens, Luann Evans, Virginia Bass, and Bev Bryan were members of Penstaff. Triad sportsmanship and team spirit excelled. One great and happy victory was the winning of the hockey trophy in the fall. Leading their team to success were Gretchen Irion, Carol Beaman, Mason Ewin, and Judy Lackey. At Thanksgiving and Easter all the Triads Joined together to collect clothes, food, and toys to send to a needy family. Through these projects and many more like them, the Triad spirit soared to make the club better than ever. It is composed of two representatives elected semi-annually from each class and is sponsored by Mrs. Eggleston. Led by Carolyn Carmichael and the other officers, the Student Council has ably carried out its purpose of directing the student as an individual and of imposing penalties whenever necessary. This year the Council made it possible for the students to obtain school Jackets. It also sponsored a highly successful tea dance, which was held in the gym. During the year the Student Council has guided the students to higher ideals of citizenship and has brought about a closer relationship between teachers and students. Each year this group has the opportunity to plan the Wednesday morning devotionals in which the members participate. Once or twice during the year an assembly is held at which the requirements for membership are stated, and ne v members are tapped. In a play presented at Christmas for the student body, all members participated and worked enthusiastically under the direc- tion of Madame Fountain.
