The Milestones of 1955 recognizes the first four years in the history of Harpeth Hall. 1955 -i IN M E M O R I A M To have known Katie is to know that the first four years of Harpetli Hall ' s existence were made richer hy her living example. To have known Katie is to understand why our memories of her are indelible, abiding in our hearts as well as our lives. A soft smile floating into quiet laughter, sweeping away triv- ialities. A firm yet gentle hand on every shoulder, guiding some, following others. A spirit, courageous in the face of suffering, determined in the threat of defeat. A calmness so deep that it steadied those about her. A strength so strong that it taught others to accept life ' s failures and triumphs, to live life to the fullest even in anticipation of the loss of it. This was Katie — more to us tlian just a classmate or a friend. The study of Latin is a living experience at Harpetli Hall with Mrs. Ottarson to open our eyes to the beauties of its history and literature. Scholar, teacher, and friend, in her we find the understanding counselor, sharing in our successes and sympathizing in our failures. Mrs. Ottarson will find a special place in each of our hearts as we look back on our school days at Harpeth Hall. Some will remember her seated at the piano in the early morning, or watering her plants before the bell: the seniors will cherish her guidance and unfailing devotion to the class of ' 55; the Honor Society members will remember her as a constant source of inspiration. But we will all recall her little black Chevy oc- cupying its special place in the parking lot. the familiar plaid knitting bag swinging from her arm as she waves a friendly hello. So to Mrs. Ottarson, scholar, teacher, and friend, we dedicate with growing apprecia- tion the Milestones of 1955. Dedication Mrs. Souby For four years Mrs. Souby ' s friendly advice, cliarniing jiianner. and sincere interest have been the object of deepest admiration to every girl at Harpeth Hall. Years of experience in teaching have not only qualified her for her administrative position, but also instilled in her a personal interest in the scholastic problems of each individual student. Little is she aware of the vital inspiration she has been to her girls and of the profound affection and respect the hold for her. By the work of each girl and the excellent sponsorship of Madame Foun- tain, the ideals of good citizenship, scholarship and sportsmanship were stressed. After elections many of the new campus leaders wore the blue and white. In the ranks of these were Ellen Russell. French Club President; Linda Edenfield. Ar Club President; Carol Campbell, Science Club Presi dent; and Florence Stumb, Vice-President of the Ath letic Association. Mary Cornelius served as a Junioi Classical League officer. Also Ellen Russell. Fran Kelt ner. Michael Larson, Elise Dobson, Cynthia Hastings and Margaret Ewin helped to lead their respective classes. Two members represented the Club in Penstaff. and Florence Stumb and Irene Jackson were on the Milestone Staff. Through good sportsmanship and exuberant spirit the Angkors pushed forward to make their Club tops. Among the sports enthusiasts were Elizabeth Ewing. Carole Minton. Ashley Whitsitt. and Tillie McNamara. By the interest and participation of members in all school activities, everyone applauded the year 54. ' 55 as a highly successful one for the Angkors. Well deserved honors in athletics, scholarship, and citizenship marked the Eccowasin record for 1954-1955. From hockey through softball the skill and ability of such athletes as Susan McKeand, Caroline Boyd. Betty Shwab. and Beth Creighton pushed the club to victory with the help of the enthusiastic rooters cheer- ing them along. When elections rolled around the green and white was well represented with Elizabeth Smith, leading the school as president of the Student Council: Eunetta Mayberry. president of the Spanish Club; and with three class presidents — Freshman. Evie Davis: Junior. Polly Akin: and Senior. Rosalie Adams. Among those representing the club scholastically were PenstafF mem- bers Beth Creighton. Polly Akin, and Lissa Luton. The club also boasted two Honor Society members. Rosalie Adams and Lissa Luton. A prevailing spirit of co-operation and loyalty to the club lielped to make the year of 1954-55 one of which the Eccowasins can well be proud. Each year the Student Council sponsors a dance for the student body. This year an informal tea dance was held in the gym. The duties of the Council are to impose penalties on those who disregard rules and regulations. Its members endeavor to guide the student body to higher ideals of citizenship and to bring about a closer unity between the teachers and the pupils. Those girls in- terested in becoming a member of PenstafI submit two manuscripts to be judged at an annual contest. This year the bimonthly meetings were held at Miss Kuykendall ' s home where the in- formal atmosphere stimulated creative thought. OTTARSON Sponsor Those girls seeking to uphold the high standards of citizenship, leader- ship, and scholarship are chosen to be members of the Honor Society. By personal achievement, aid to her fel- low students, and loyalty to her school, a girl represents the ideals of this or- ganization. One of the functions of the Honor Society is to plan the chapel programs at Harpeth Hall in which the members participate. In the spring the Honor Society sponsors a program in which the requirements for membership are stated and the new members tapped. Penstaff Honor Society Presidents ' Council The Presidents ' Council is com- posed of the presidents of the social clubs, the classes, the Student Coun- cil and the Honor Society. It is the responsibility of. this organization to work with Mrs. Souby on matters con- cerning the student body and to em- phasize the importance of leadership. The functions of this organization are super- vised by the athletic board which is com- posed of the officers of the Athletic As- sociation and a representative from each club and class. To become an active member of this group a girl must earn either a varsity letter or three club let- ters. Trophies and letters are awarded for outstanding achievement in various sports. Although athletic ability is stressed, the main goal of this organi- zation is to promote good sportsman- ship among the students. The outstanding features of this year ' s activities were a trip to the American Museum of Atomic Energy at Oak Ridge. Tennessee, and a scientific exhibition put on by the members of the club for the enjoyment of the rest of the school. Un- der the leadership of Carol Campliell and the guidance of Miss Mountfort. the club has had a profitable year. Under the excellent leadership of Mrs. Oltar- son and Miss Mims. all Latin students except first year girls participated to make the year ' 54- ' ,55 a rich one. During the year the members enjoyed learning a four part Latin song, presenting a skit to the student body, and singing in Latin many of the well known carols at Christmas time. The girls drew place cards for a luncheon at the Centennial Club as another project. During the Christmas holidays, the students had a tea for their parents, and they displayed their work at this time. The better drawings of each member were also displayed at Harpeth Hall at the close of the year.
