Humidity. Between the unique culture and cosmopolitan atmosphere of Singapore, the lingering memory for most people was the tropical climate. This was the kind of humidity that was liable to spawn algae in your socks by the end of the day. Singapore was considered a working port, but by mid-afternoon you could see people catching a bus to the Terror Club (the local serviceman ' s club) or hopping aboard the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) to venture downtown. A few people made there way to the world famous Singapore Zoo where monkeys freely roamed the grounds. It did not take a lot of creative thought to find something interesting to do. Albeit modern. Singapore has deservedly earned the dubious distinction as A Fine City. Novelty t-sliirts portraying actual laws of the city were abundant in gift shops, and you only had to look around to reali e that jaywalking, walking with a be erage or smoking in public were not simply taboo, they were illegal. Of course, this did not negate the hospitality of the people. For thi se who wanted to get off the ship and stretch their legs a bit. Singapore hosted the Ho er ARC Sportstcst. The competition included soccer, soltball. basketball, and tennis, to nam e a few . With u|iw aiils of four thousand people in the ARCj (includmg Marines), the c cnt fostercil some great competition. As always, five days lieu by. and by Januar I Ith we were enroute to Phuket. Thailand.
