KM rSS HARPHRS MRRY (LSD-49) The Landing Craft Air Cushioned (LCAC) craft is a high speed, multi- purpose, true amphibious vehicle utilized for ship to shore movement of USMC vehicles, personnel, and weapons systems. Flying at a height of five feet, the LCAC can translate from sea to land without any configuration changes and can travel inland, teirain and fuel dependent, to landing zones well past the surf zone, unlike typical displacement type landing craft. The LCAC is powered by four TF4()B Marine Gas Turbine engines rated at 4,000 horsepower each. Propulsion is gained by two 12ft variable pitch propellers while lift is provided by four centrifugal lift fans. Control of the craft is accomplished by a complete fly-by-wire system using the latest in computer technology. Single-craft, over-the-horizon independent operations are capable due to a state-of-the-art navigation suite consisting of an LN66 radar, .stand alone Global Positioning System (GPS) and HP, VHP, and UHF communications capabilities. The LCAC crew consists of five pers onnel, a Craftmaster, an Engineer, a Navigator, a Loadmaster, and a Deck Hngineer. The Assault Craft Unit 5 (ACU- 5) deployed detachment also consists of a seven personnel Maintenance Detachment to maintain, inspect and repair the craft. ACLI-5 is based out of Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base near Oceanside, California and is home to more than 40 hovercraft. They are dedicated to the amphibious community and proud to be the knitc edge on the Tip of the Spear. '
