Greer One of the most familiar doors to all Harperites is the one to 205. Inside the door Mrs. Greer and her very able secretaries handle records dealing with attendance and deportment. The eihcient girls who serve on the 205 stall per- form a variety of services as filing, keeping records, typing, explaining the forms to all freshmen and as messengers. Although many students may have a legitimate record in 205, when one of the messengers enters a classroom and asks lor someone he always expects the worst. Most of the time Mrs. Greer summons the student to clear a record but sometimes there are students who do get the worst. 205 is also the room where everyone must go to get re-admits or tardy slips. Except for the few people who have perlect attendance lor four years every- one at some time or another must visit 205. Harperites may think ol 205 as a torture cliainher but it is really only the ollice where records are kept. Some of the senior players who were outstanding in this season's games were Don Swanson and Tony Gusich, Harper's talented kicker. The backbone of the team consisted of Aumann, Dzimidas, and Fabrizio, who played both offensive and defensive brilliantly and as a result completed many successful plays. The 1952 season was one of the most successful Harper has ever had. They split the games by defeating Englewood, Farragut, and Parker, but were defeated by Du Sable, Bowen and Hyde Park. With their captain Joan Malkus calling the signals the cheerleaders have lead enthusiastic Cardinal rooters into a frenzy of yell- ing for their team. Flashes of red skirts and white sweaters can be seen at all the football and basketball games as the cheerleaders go through their routine. These peppy morale boosters have helped give the teams that extra oomph needed for victories. BATON TWIRLERS Right along with the cheerleaders are the baton twirlers who perform at half time at the football games. The tossing and spinning of their shiny metal staves holds the attention of the crowds. It's intriguing the way the twirlers manipulate their batons while spectators sit tense wondering if the experts will miss. But Mil, Sally, and Carol always come through with a good show. It was through the efforts of high scorers Jack Grillin and VVally Doren, that Harper was able to average 61.3 points per game for the season. For their effort Griihn and Doren were rewarded by being selected on the All-South Sec- tion Team, with Doren being the only mid-year graduate in the city to receive this honor. Grifhn ended the season with 234 points making him third highest scorer in the city. Though the team didn't make the playoffs this year, they should have a good chance next year, when the Frosh-Sophs will move up to be with remaining high scorers Nelson, Sherp, Frendon, and Mack. But this little pest has also busied himself annoying teachers by using his charm on already weakened by spring fever, pupils. Some of Harper's now prominent and enthusiastic golfers can be found practicing at Marquette Park and playing at jackson Park every pleasant day. While on the subject of holes, Harper's aquatic artists may be found frequenting one of their favorite swimming holes to limber up and keep in shape for next year's team and swim meets. Although Harper has not been up with the best high school teams they are becoming a promising threat in the city meets. I Page 19 All Around Aihlefes Top. The spring officers remain the same except lor Carol Gottschalk who is President and Shirley Smith, Vice-President. The 500 Club, also supervised by Mrs. Stanek is the halfway mark towards getting a letter. The Girls' Letter Club, sponsored by Niiss Schmook, holds many social functions outside oi school. One ol the most enjoyable affairs was the initiation. Carol Gottschalk, Carol Kozak, Pat Donavzm, Ruth Esch, Aiidfea Duval, and Barbara Crane were officers. For c ne thing they sing many German songs, as Mr. Schilke, their teacher, is also a Fine musician. Discussions in the club become so heated that the students revert to English sometime in order to express their opinions more freely, although they enjoy listening to Mr. Schilke hold forth in Ge.man. During this year the high German club's oflicers are Edward Holzrichter, President, Kenneth Koppin, Vice Presidentg Margaret Krause, Secretary, Harvey Brundage, Treasurerg and glenn ie Wfoll, Reporter. This friendly atmosphere which prevails induces a desire to participate in the class activities. She encourages the students to read her huge variety of Spanish books as extra curricular activity. This increases the students' vocabulary and faniiliarizes them with the peculiarities ol' the Spanish speaking people. Ol' all the book selections Miss Ryan has, the students' favorite is El Camino Real which is used in all her Spanish classes. Page 60 ldionia Exrraniero SPANISH CLUB In most of the rooms in the building students know that they are in the United States, but when they walk into 314 they feel that they are in a foreign country. It could be Mexico or it could be Spain Miss Loretta Ryan, Spanish teacher, has collected many things from Spanish speaking countries such as carved wood, shawls, baskets, leather craft, silver jewelry, and figurines. Many of the students here like Spanish because both Mexico and Spain are gay countries, full of exciting fun, old legends and superstitious, and they enjoy studying about them. In Harper's Mexico almost the same things happen-there are singing, story telling, and plays. They have three presiding ofhcers who are president, secretary, and treasurer. Some of the prominent Latin club presi- dents are .Ioan Trnka, John Kokan, and Ronald North. Oral reports are given on club days to explain English speaking people's great debts to Greece and Rome. These reports are based upon the laws, music, and everyday liv- ing of the typical Roman family. The Romans probably would be honored to know that the beauty of their lan- guage has been revived in the public schools, under the ef- hcient direction of such teach- ers as Mrs. Maas. Year after year the freshmen flock by the dozens trying to join the choir while the graduating seniors regretfully drop out. Under the superb direction of Mr. L. Schilke the choir has always been a great success. Mr. Schilke has been directing the A Cappella Choir for twelve years and there is no doubt as to the magnificient work that he has done. It isn't an easy job directing a group as large as this but Mr. Schilke is well respected by all choir members and their full co-operation is given. The beautiful work of the choir itself can not be overlooked for within there is perfect teamwork which holds the entire organization together. This teamwork combined with harmony, forms a good choir which Harper un- Page 64 They Will Sing For AWhile Row 3-Weiss, james, Kraft, Kareta, Well, Fiedler, Hartnell, jankovich, Eade, Collins, Dolinko, Barnett, Boland, Hadra, Shay, Adam, Van Dyke, Maertz, Pahr, Stroud, Dunne, Streeter, Young, Malaker Row 4-Anderson, Thomas, Cornell, Johnston, Adams, Cloutier, Mischke, Campbell, Ferree, Wandell, Kemp, Ryen, Schuler, Horan, Hecht, Hall, Brown, Hay, Baker, Rader, Guhl, Baumeister, Helander questionably has. Harperites can be very proud of the A Cappella Choir. They make a striking picture when dressed in white robes and crimson stoles as they are for all formal appearances. W'ithin a choir of one hundred voices there are some outstanding voices which are singled out and used as soloists. This year's soloists have been Ray Michaels and Marsha Fine. Accoinpanists are also needed by the choir and Lois Kutschke, Beverly Adams, and Darlene Streeter have helped a great deal with their talents. Besides soloists and pianists, secretaries are needed to handle the various jobs that must be done. Six dependable girls, Mary Rita Brown, Sue Botkin, Norma Hay, Sue Senese, Marilyn Ryan, and Marsha Fine have been working quite elliciently at these many jobs, Page 65 Zi! Their chief public appearance is at Harper graduation exercises both semesters. This year they made a special extra appearance at the graduation exercises of a nursing group sponsored by the Chicago Board of Education. They are always associated with Pomp and Circumstancef' the processional march which the orchestra plays when the gradu- ates take the long walk down the aisle, although they are able to perform other selections efficiently. Tommie Jo Thomas, Betty Krause, and Marjorie Swanson are the only Orchestra players graduating in June, 1953. The members, who are under the direction of Mr. Erst, earn up to fifteen civic letter points a semester. Page 67 Music Hath Charm GIRLS' CHORUS Perfectionists at work! This term best describes the occupants of 406 seventh period. 'Working diligently to obtain utmost perfection the Girls' Chorus works for forty minutes doing warming-up exercises and practicing their songs. In this way each girl develops her own voice and learns to blend with the group. Perfectionists at pleasure, could also describe this choral group. All eighty girls-the sopranos, altos, and menosfagree it is a pleasure to join in perfect harmony and make beautiful music. Many girls begin chorus in their freshman year and continue throughout their four years of high school. It helps make the monotony of the school day colorful as well as earning civic letter points. Returning from her sabbatical leave during which she studied at the XVaring School arranging and composing for choral groups, Mrs. Elworth had new ideas to improve the Chorus. Dressed in black skirts and white blouses with black ties, the Girls' Chorus sang at many school assemblies one of which was the Brotherhood Assembly. At Christmas time, they con- tribute to the Yuletide spirit by caroling through the halls. Looking very colorful in their formals the Chorus entertained with the rest of the music department in the Spring Festival. Among other songs they sang Fred lfVaring's lfVhere In the World and Sweetheart of Sigma Chi. The Girls' Chorus has contributed much to the enter- tainment and enjoyment of music loving Harperites. Obtaining either E's or S's in their majors and no less than G's in their minors is certainly proof of their hard work. Being particularly intelligent is not the trick, as can be seen by talking to some of the members. It's just the use of one's intelligence to the best of his ability. Nearly two hundred members may be found in this group. Miss Moran, who is the sponsor of this organization, each semester calls a meeting of its members to Give out the traditional Legion of Honor pins. After being in this Legion for two years including the 4A 'O . . . . semester, the pm which is otherwise returned at the end of each semester, then rightfully belongs to the student. Page 73 On The Road To Success NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY At Harper as in many of the schools in the United States, one of the most distinguished groups is the National Honor Society. This organization .'.t' f consis s o a very select group of students ranking high in scholarship, leadership, service, and good character. R.O.T.C., They are responsible for a variety of duties ranging from period leaders to battalion commanders, with some assigned to special tasks such as supply officer, executive officer, and range officer. Page 79 Ba'rl's Bullseye Boys Under the able supervision of Capt. Batt, the Rifle Team won high honors. First they took District Championship and then went on to win fourth place in the city. The team members were: David Strong Manager, Alfred Alys, Captain, Milan Duris, Norman Gutelius, Robert I-Iilt, and Edward Holzrichter During the year they have defeated such schools as Fenger 891 to 813, Lindblom 862 to 728, Morgan Park 891 to 819, Gage Park 865 to 804, and Englewood 86l to 767. Their job is to see that everyone gets out of the building as fast as possible, They direct the students to the right exits, make sure the trallic moves freely, and hold the doors open to make it easier to get out. Fire marshalls must be dependable and wide awake because they have a great responsibility. They are under the direct supervision of Mr. Farrington. Each semester a Fire commissioner is selected. He is in charge of the other marshalls. About eighty students participate in this activity. The fire commissioners for the last two semesters were Rich Herbold and john Gurrister. Page 81 On The Beam STAGE CRAFT Behind the scenes at all performances in the auditorium are a small group of patient but energetic fellows. It is most evident that someone is in charge of the stage but the crew is usually never recognized because they work behind the curtain. Speaking of work, this crew is probably one of the busiest clubs at Harper. Before an assembly they are putting up scenery or setting the stage. During the production the curtains, lights and loud speaking system must be attended, and after the show all stage settings must be removed. These boys are under the capable leadership of Mr. Lynch. MOVIE OPERATORS Everyone likes movies. Harperites even like educational ones as long as they get out of class to see them. Every day there are classes in -109 viewing them-from crime movies for for Health classes. Mr. Buehrer's helpers show films to classes Civics classes to sports movies These boys spend their free periods showing pictures in order almost every period every day. to get points toward a civic letter. For this valuable service the Ushers, who are sponsored by Mr. Stanek, receive one or two civic letter points. The checker team is also under the direction ol' Mr. Stanek, who can be seen playing checkers in any of his free time. This year the team won the checker championship of the city because of the skillful playing of John Polzin, Al Slapkauskas, Leo Tanke, Donald Lyngklip, and Jack Springetti. These may vary from a contraption showing equilibrium to a graduate cylinder showing water displacement. The students under Mr. Harris's direction learn what, how, and why things take place in their lives. Students with a G average can work in the school office assisting the clerks. Some of the jobs that these girls do are typing, filing, answering telephones, and running errands. They not only get civic letter points but they serve the school. There are three office clerks, Mrs. Vlazny, Mrs. Beaty, and Mrs. Van Gender. At first none of the students in the division care to associate with the salesman. The students have learned all through their lives to stay away from bill collectors, so there they sit without a friend or even a subscriber until the First sign goes up which says Shield Deadline December l2. All of a sudden they have hundreds of people flocking to them, with dimes, quarters, and dollars to make the first deadline. From December to March the salesmen can be seen during seventh and eighth periods making their daily trips to room 404. Here they fill out little white slips and deposit their collected money with .loan Haering, Harvey Brundage, Helen Schultz, or Mary Keaveny. The eflicient salesmen keep quite complicated records of their Shield subscribers Although the subscriber may get confused as to whether he has paid fifty cents or four dollars, the salesman is very seldom mixed up. In October the Shield Staff entertained all of the salesmen at a tea in the Mellin Room to acquaint them with the procedure. Their enthusiastic response and co-operation made the 1953 Shield possible. Aiter all their hard work comes the long waited day in June when they finally enter the division laden with the shining new Shields. They feasted on such things as roast turkey, white fish, salad, and chocolate sundaes. Vlalter Buchler, acting as Master of Ceremonies, took care of the program part of the evening. This consisted of very line entertainment: speeches by Miss Hedeen and Mr. Carlin, songs by Sylvia Kocean and Ray Micheals and 21 novelty duet by Maiy Ann Lacy and Mfalter Doren.
