This lab consists of seven eflicient kitchen units and a breakfast nook. A combination that is customary in modern apartments is the living-din- ing room unit that is furnished in modern decorations with a soft shade of green predominating. In addition there is a utility room that is equipped with an automatic Washer jand dryer plus a mangle with plenty of storage space besides. All the people who visit these rooms, students and the guests who come here to eat their food, agree that a school With such a foods lab- oratory is lucky indeed. .,. sfjj ' a is Page 12 I-WT--if 7 ' l 4J1,.- ,. w 1.42 -..-,f,.. 3, ,, , ,fl . ww' ww ww w 1 w w LM,,+ X - '- :i:i:i 'f1S' ::.- wg ' L ' www. w ' :rn -.1 .-ww-V - V.: ,g:--.1 ' w H 'w Hs wwww Af' w ' W wJ+mgi+?+ HJ, .LX .A 89- H , BBHw.g.:.. qw w -Mw www -G W ww ' www www n ww www w.w :uw naw' 'M? 5521! w2l'1 ' Qgfggxw www- .EE , www HZ' I mmm w .wwf fum. .wg ., ww N w ww H H w ww-w- -E-www w , 'EEK ? ww w-ww H7535 giwi'-jg-:.'-am W, Yiiwww' 'S'-'51, mmUV,V. w 'ww w n,.,M www ,w- ww 'ww 'w www. However each game provided its thrills and once again Harper proved itself to be no push over. The football season ended with no wins and six losses. Coach Watt's Tv formation stymied many a team but superior size soon told the tale. On the whole the team was small but what they lacked in size they made up in spirit and deter- mination. Outstanding gridders Were backs, Ron Nielsen, George Bruck, who was chosen most valuable, Vic Volpi, and such stalwart linemen as George Smith and George Kovacevich. Page 45 B Back Row-Coach Gray, Van Bogget, McCarthy, Coeppner, Dell, LaPorta Sitting-Moscato, Sutton, Daliege, Johnson fCapt.D, Hair fCapt.J W NNING HIZZES From the beginning of the season it was evident that the Lights were play off bound. Ranked with the top twelve quintets in the city and lauded as one of I-Iarpeifs greatest teams they soon proved the experts right. Along with having plenty of iight and ability the Coach Gray fast break style of play soon boosted the team up among the top scoring teams in city. The result of the successful season was a third place berth in south section. The Cardinal five drew Lane Tech as their first opponent in the playoffs. Experiencing the worst shooting average all season Harper dropped a closely contested 43-S9 decision to Lane on their home court. High scorer for the game as he was all season was Capt. Bill Hair with 18 points followed by Rodger Sutton and Bob McCarthy both with 7. Tom Johnston was voted most valuable for the season. Veterans john Moscato, Bob Daliege and Don Geoppner were main stays that rounded out a great team. . ASHI G PLASHI G One of the lesser known but important sports participated in at Harper is Track. Although it is given little publicity, the team is one of the best in the South Section. Last year it placed third in section and this year the boys are confident of placing first. Some of the prominent members are Herb Weidner in the half mile, Jim Fanson in the mile, and Ken Single in the quarter mile. Another sport that is popular with both boys and girls is swim- ming. Although Harper has no organized swimming team at this time, swimming is engaged in during gym classes and enjoyed by all. Most of the members of the picked platoon were selected from Company A men under his command. These men made an excellent showing in the district meet which was held at Lindblom. The rifle team which was also made up partly from Company A, took third place in sec- tional competition. Due to the efforts of these boys the unit has increased from a membership of Fifty two on September 5, 1950 to 132 on March 1. This is a result of the concern of the cadets about the international situation and their interest in military training. Page 58 C MPAN A, PRE RIGHT BEHI IJ Y0 Company B . . . After Mustari graduated, Robert Michaels took over command. Every Thursday a special meeting is called and the activities for the on-coming Week' are discussed. Each otlicer has a special duty. An important function of each officer is the training of tlrst year cadets. The staflds duty is to see that the training schedules, meinorandas, and all special orders are carried out for the following Week. Much of the ushering is done on the boys, own time and everyone who has been served by them has nothing but the highest praise for Mr. Stanek and his Ushers Club for the work they have done these past semesters. Be- sides plain physics, Mr. Buehrer, the physics teacher, instructs the stu- dents in nuclear physics which pertain to the atom and the hydrogen bombs. Harperas iirst principal Mr. Arthur Deaver, was aliection called KKing Arthurv after the famous King Arthur of the Round T Who lived in medieval times. King Arthur and his knights gath every evening around the round table feasting and telling tales of great deeds and achievements they had accomplished. The stories these deeds were emblazoned on each knights shield which l behind him on the Wall. From there the name 'gShield,' was derived for the Harper year book, in Which all the achievements of the school year are engraved. Page 86 T E YE RBO0K STAFF Upper left-Hebel, Single, K.
