Q A H C7 Asfofy s53 gi HN 1-Q In the fall of the year 1940 frve members of the 1953 sen1or class started their educatron 1n krndergarten They were Bob Short Sheila Puls Wrlson Verna Du rant Gary Kastor and Stanley Antrim Although many have tr1ed it rn later years sleep and get by with rt A very intricate course was provrded in store keeping and advanced art work Miss Rrce our teacher stressed the need of self control Jumping on to the first grade we ac quired srx new members Merlrn Brrner Velda Latta Clark Thompson, Joyce Krllron, Don Frelds and Kenneth W111 rams In this class we were so outstanding we frnrshed our second reader and started our third In the second grade Helen Russell was the only new member As you can see thts year wasn t as successful as we might have hoped for For our thrrd grade assembly we put on a circus conststtng of clowns strong men acrobats and all the talent whrch goes to make a good clrcus The class voted to frnrsh school rather than Jorn the Barnum 8: Barley Shows Romance started buddrng rn the fourth grade when Irm Henman took JoDean Moore home on hrs brcycle Also Kenneth Wrllrams and Priscilla Sanders were seen frequently rn lockers together B111 Hacker Sandra Scarlett and Charlene Potter Qshe wasn t married at that trmej were the other new members In the fifth grade we welcomed Morris Banks into our class It seems some of the girls didn t get along too well that year Oh well what s a black eye or two In the sixth grade we acquired a few knots on our heads, fMr Lrtsey was our teacherj along w1th V1rg1n1a Kraus and Barbara Warbrnton Much talent was discovered in the seventh grade when we put on the annual Chrrstmas program Gary Parsons one of the motor scooter fiends entered the last of the year Our outstandmg athletes showed their hand rn the erghth grade by berng the only undefeated softball and track team rn the hrstory of Harper Grade School The pas trme of the class was flrpplng rulers and pencils out the windows and having eraser battles qDon t tell Mr Mayberry pleasep Finally the day arrived The day of suddenly the skys clouded up and drops of rarn fell and we marched 1n from the slde door From that trme on we did everything different from any other class As freshmen we drd about what every other freshman class does Hiding behind a corner whan a senior passes and smrlrng at all the teachers Oh well so we drd change That year we got all the country hrcks er kids They were Peggy Car others Carl Wrnters Don Vornauf and Clyde Ghere Gary Parsons was our presr dent with Priscilla Sanders vice presrdent and Melvin Moore the secretary treasurer Many members of our class started play ing rnstruments and as usual the band recerved top honors at the festivals We won t say much about the soph omore year because there 1sn t much to say However we did have quxte a Hal loween party that year For some strange reason the teachers wouldn t dunk for apples Not that we would hold them under or anything Stanley Antrrm led us as president Don Frelds berng vtce president and Don Rymph the secretary treasurer The Juntor year was qurte a year Kenneth Williams especially enjoyed that year Margaret Wedman started school then Gordon Ford also entered our class The Junior Play Don t Take My Penny was a smash hit and was billed for two perfor mances To a packed house the players acted therr parts and recerved a tremen dous applause Another hrghlrght was the Junror Carnrval Our class won the king and queen for the second trme rn a row, settrng a new record Verna Durant, Sandra Scar lett Gary Kastor and Stanley Antrrm partlcrpated rn the annual speech contest and with Mrs Shepherd sponsoring them recerved high raungs Much excrtement was caused when Don Frelds got porson rvy whrle rn a watermelon patch Still no one knows what he was doing rn a watermelon patch Barbara Warbrnton was chosen to attend Girl s State at Topeka that summer and Stanley Antrim wrote the best short story rn our d1SII1CI that year Endtng the year wrth a bang was the Jr Sr Banquet sided over JoDean Moore was vrce presr dent Gary Kastor secretary and Barbara Warblnton the treasurer The banquet set us back frnanclally but we were pacrfred by the fact that next year we would be the guests and have a free meal Yes now we were Senrors We had frnally taken our places rn the audrtorrum rn front of everyone else and we were per mitted to walk out first but usually got trampled fYou know the freshmen are getting brggerj The two new members were Bob Crrcle and Randell Ftshel Leonard Drumrlght was chosen president Sandra Scarlett vrce president Margaret Wed man secretary and Gary Kastor treasurer B111 Hacker and Gary Parsons turned out to be our track stars by breakrng records and receiving frrsts at many of the track meets Other athletes of our class were Kenny Williams Carl Winters Gary Kas tor Don Frelds and Gordon For Jo Dean Moore brought honor to the class by recetvrng a I at the state musrc festrval with her saxophone solo Joyce K1l11on recerved the state D A R award A class party at the Anthony Lake provrded much entertainment for the class Any way they all seemed to be happy Father Was A Housewife was the name of the play our Senior year lt was an outstand mg performance and very successful After a trrp to Wichita to see the Bob Crosby show and the Senior Dinner we fmally had to accept the fact that we were broke.
