Ah' A boat' As rt came nearer she could make out the form of a broad shouldered man skrlfully wreld rng the oars to keep the boat from oyer turnrng She notrced that wrth much drili eulty he was gradually drawrng the tossrng boat out of the swrft current He then steered the craft toward the tree rn whrch Jane and the chrldren were perched Frnally surely he brought rt rn close Jane was so trred and thrngs seemed so hazy that she drd not notrce whether he was old or young All she cared was that thrs man had the power of rescurng them He drew hrs tall frame up and put out hrs arm to assrst Jane rnto the boat Then he lrfted the chrldren down and placed them gently on the bottom VS hat happened after that Jane could not tell When she regarned conscrousness she was rn a small well furnrshed room She was lyrng under a snow whrte coverlet rn a bed whrch was yery soft and warm She opened her puzzled eyes and saw an elderly whrte harred woman comrng toward her wrth a glass rn her hand She bent over Jane and sard softly You re rest The lrttle ones are fast asleep so dont worry about them Please drrnk thrs an then try to go to sleep 'roull be as we as eyer rn the rnornrng Srrrrlrng weakly Jane took the glass an slowly drank rts contents Then she back on the prllows Oh you are so very krnd she sard How n I ever thank you enough?
