Ah' A boat' As rt came nearer she could make out the form of a broad shouldered man skrlfully wreld rng the oars to keep the boat from oyer turnrng She notrced that wrth much drili eulty he was gradually drawrng the tossrng boat out of the swrft current He then steered the craft toward the tree rn whrch Jane and the chrldren were perched Frnally surely he brought rt rn close Jane was so trred and thrngs seemed so hazy that she drd not notrce whether he was old or young All she cared was that thrs man had the power of rescurng them He drew hrs tall frame up and put out hrs arm to assrst Jane rnto the boat Then he lrfted the chrldren down and placed them gently on the bottom VS hat happened after that Jane could not tell When she regarned conscrousness she was rn a small well furnrshed room She was lyrng under a snow whrte coverlet rn a bed whrch was yery soft and warm She opened her puzzled eyes and saw an elderly whrte harred woman comrng toward her wrth a glass rn her hand She bent over Jane and sard softly You re rest The lrttle ones are fast asleep so dont worry about them Please drrnk thrs an then try to go to sleep 'roull be as we as eyer rn the rnornrng Srrrrlrng weakly Jane took the glass an slowly drank rts contents Then she back on the prllows Oh you are so very krnd she sard How n I ever thank you enough? Neyer mrnd that now, replred the lrttle lady Go to sleep now, and well talk rn the mornrng Vkrth that she trp toed out of the room and closed the door softly Jane heard her quret ly descendrng the starrs and then she was rsleep sank It was rnornrng Jrne opened lrer eyes and saw that the sun w rs streamrrrg rn through the wrndow She yawned and stretched, and firrdrng that she felt as good as new, she Jumped out of bed Suddenly she remem bered that her clothes were badly torn and she hated to put them on .rgarn She looked about the room and there on .1 eharr was a complete outfit from dress to trny shoes' The wonderful lady had put them there whrle she was asleep Jane qurckly put on the clean clothes They were a trrfle large but he drd not rnrnd that Then she combed and brushed her tangled curls urrtrl they shone and gurded by the sound of low vorces, went down starrs and rnto the krtchen The whrte harred lady was begrnnrng to prepare breakfast and after the usual good mornrngs they began to talk lrke old frrends All at once Jane realrzed that she drd not eyerr know the name of her benefactors She asked the krnd woman her name My name she sard rs Mrs Barton It was my son who rescued you and brought you here Hrs name rs Dan At that moment Dan poked hrs curly blond head rn through the door He was amazed to find Jane up so soon He surveyed her wrth an approvrng eye and then sard Xou surely look better and I hope yo feel better too Jane smrled shyly She notrced how tall and broad shouldered he was how bronzed was hrs boyrsh face, and she met the gaze of hrs keen frank, grey eyes As rf fascrn ated by what she read rn hrs admrrrng glance, she returned hrs look for a long moment then blushrngly turned away 1 n rn my new roadster before breakfast? he asked snrrlrnglv VS hy er Ier dont know, she stamrnered Xes dear, go ahead sard Mrs Barton Ill look after the chrldren when they wake ur Vyhen Jane and Dan came back from a delrghtful sprn they found Brlly and Joan on the porch wartrng for thenr Arnt we lucky? sard Brlly to have thrs fella rescue us?
