Much has been accomplished by Har- mony's students through practice and instruction from the teachers, directors, and coaches of our faculty. Q As you look through the '67 Rocket, we hope you will be reminded of some of your own personal memories. In addition to our attempt to capture the events of the past year within these pages, we encourage you to look ahead-- to Harmony's future, to your future. Harmony is gaining strength and moving forward in many aspects. So we present to you the 1967 Rocket as a challenge for all who will follow to support existing organizations with enthusiasm, to encourage formation of new ideas, to set high goals, and to reach those goals with solid determination. '. A mnganms wsam .ie.. n1il 1-.a ..,a Class 0 1967 Coming in as freshmen in 1963, the class of '67 had sixty-four members. We were an eager group, participating in many of the extra-curricular activities, and beginning to take our individual places in the school. In the spring we put on tlu'ee one-act plays, under the direction of Mrs. Doan. As sophomores our prestige had grown a little and we were getting a reputation as an enthusiastic class, to say the least. In the fall we presented three one-act plays, again directed by Mrs. Doan. Our junior year was perhaps our busiest. In the fall we held a magazine sale, in which we raised more money than any other class in the history of Harmony--a total of 52584. Also that fall, we presented a three-act play en- titled Girl from Outer Spacen, directed by Mr. Schakel. In April the annual Junior-Senior Prom was given by the Juniors. We worked long and hard, and to award our efforts, we presented the Seniors a memorable evening in The Isle of Golden Dreams. As Seniors at Harmony our main thoughts were not toward the past, but toward the future. In the fall and winter we were busily preparing for our futures, sending applications to colleges and employers. In the fall, we sold annual ads, adding up to 5466, which was considerably more than previous years. We took two trips, one to the State Penitentiary at Ft. Madison and to Des Moines to visit the legislature in session. Our senior class play was presented in April, entitled Cheaper by the Dozen. We had an over-capacity crowd and a very successful performance. The climax of our high school days were the baccalaureate and commencement exercises, when we officially were graduated after four years of rewarding experiences at Harmony. As spokesmen for the other classes, we set aside this space to remember... You, the Juniors of Harmon High School, were the middle class this past year. You had learned by experience the things that set you apart from sophomores, but you still lacked the completing touch to be mistaken for seniors. Nevertheless, we, the seniors encourage you to put into action new ideas and be stalwart leaders during the next school year. Raising money for your junior activities was uppermost in your minds as you planned for your magazine sales campaign. You did quite well in it. To further you financially, your class play helped your treasury. Much time was spent by you to prepare for the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, which ended the principal social activities at the end of the year. The members of the Sophomore class were active in all phases of student activities this year. You realized the many chances for recognition at Harmony and applied yourselves in a very com- mendable way. The half-time activities at all home football games were presented by the band. A Tag Day was held following the Farmington Homecoming Parade to raise money for a film of the band at con- test. The marching band season reached a climax when the band received a Division II rating at the State Marching Band Contest at Davenport. On December 11, 1966, a Christmas Concert was presented. The Mixed Chorus, Girls' and Boys' Glee Clubs, and the band performed. The band attended the Blackhawk Conference Instrumental Festival at Van Buren on March 14, 1967. The following week, the choruses went to Pekin for the Blackhawk Conference Vocal Festival. The State Music Contest for Solos and Small Ensembles was held at Harmony this year. Many students participated, not only performing, but also by helping run the various centers to make the con- test a success. The highlight of the year came by traveling to Edddyville for the State Music Contest for Large Groups. Division II ratings were received by the Mixed Chorus and Girls' and Boys' Glee Clubs. The Concert Band received a Division I rating. Mr. Perkins and Mrs. Hoaglin can be proud of their students, and can surely count the 1966-67 school year as a very successful one. MILLER'S HOME FOR FUNERALS Farmington Marching The majorette of the Harmony Marching Band for 1967 is Nancy Meek. She has also been majorette for the two preceeding years. When not out in front of the marching band, she plays clarinet in concert band and small instrumental groups. From the chills of autumn football games to the windy weather of her final performance, Nancy has led the Harmony Marching Band, and much of our success is a result of her job well-done. IOWA NURSERY Farmington B and Mr. Perkins provided the band with an excellent march rou- tine of company fronts, V-Formations, pinwheels, and his own creation called, The Enigma, commonly referred to as the Mess. Musical selections included Men of Ohio, Semper Fidelis, Swing Low Sweet Chariot, and variations of Harmony's school song, the Notre Dame Victory Song. NEU'S SERVICE STATION Farmington .3 Zi. For the year of '66-67 the Harmony boys started making a mark for themselves by having a very successful football season. The captains for the squad were Steve Reno, Dwight Stanley, and Maurice Huff, who led their team to a 3 win, 6 loss season. Honors for the team went to Marc Reno who led in tackles with 69 with brother Steve right behind him with 66. Maurice Huff led in the touchdown department with a final tally of 12. When the season ended the team was very honored to have Marc Reno chosen for lst team offense and 2nd team defense all- conferenceg Maurice Huff for lst team defense, 2nd team offenseg Steve Reno for 2nd team offenseg Charles Boyer for 2nd team defense. All in all, the boys felt they had a very good season. The boys basketball season was as equally rewarding. They set quite a different mark for themselves than was accomplished in '65-66. Their record was 7 wins and 12 losses. The high point game average was held by Jerry Deere with 14. Jerry was also this year's team captain. He also held the record for scoring the most points in one ball game which was against West Burlington where he scored a total of 33 points. After completing a very good season. all- conference teams were named with Jerry Deere on first team, and receiving honorable mention were Tim Rider and Dave Therme. When track season started, the school witnessed Mr. Downing running right along with his boys. Not much was heard from these boys except for the fact that it was a very proud squad who sent their qualifier Maurice Huff to the state meet in the 180 yard low hurdles. They say new things are always happening at Harmony and the tradition was carried out since this was the first year for spring baseball. The pitchers for this year's team are Tim Rider and Gary Drummond. MOOTHART PHILLIP 66 Hillsboro Girls were also a very important part of this year's athletic department at Harmony. They started off the year with a very successful softball season. Their record was 8 wins and 3 losses. Norma Hartley was their pitcher. Leading in the batting department with their averages were: Nancy Meek with .5005 Susan McCabe with .438g and Connie Stecker with .406. To reward them for a good season, the girls brought home the sectional champions trophy. Basketball was a very recognized part of the Harmony girls schedule this year. With an over-all season record of 12 wins and 14 losses, and with a conference record of 6 wins and 6 losses, the girls surprised many people in the locality. Captains for this year's team were Norma Hartley and Sherry Medaris. As a senior, Sherry had her peak season by leading the team with her high point average of 21 and most points scored in one game of 39 against Win- field-Mt. Union in the district tournaments. Sandy Stecker led the defense in rebounds with 275 for an average of 10 per game. She also holds the record for most rebounds as a sophomore. To add grandeur to their season the girls came home with the runnner-up trophy in the sec- tional and they were fourth in the district. As their season came to a close, the conference teams were named on which Norma Hartley was named as first team guard, Sandra Stecker, second team guard and Sherry Medaris, second team forward. Honors also went to Norma Hartley as she was chosen for honorable mention on the all-state teams. She was also chosen as most valuable player of her squad for the season. When the time for track rolled around 13 girls reported for duty to Mr. Thomas. The team was led by Connie Douthart and Debbie Watson who scored 50 and 42 points respectively. These two girls also placed in the conference track meet. The following is an editorial which was put together from personal essays written by Seniors. If a composite 1967 graduate of Har- mony could give you his impression, he might say--- One of the first things that comes to my mind is that I can't believe that I am a senior and ready for college next fall. I always thought I couldn't wait to be a seniorg now I'd just as soon be a freshman and start over doing everything right, such as studying harder, trying harder in sports, and taking more in- terest in extracurricular activitieshother than sports. The next thing that comes to my mind is the school building itself. Here it is, clear out here in the country. To me it's kind of like going to country school. I never went to country school so I don't know, but I know it's a long way to come. The con- solidation of Farmington, Bonaparte, and Hillsboro has given me a chance to make many new friends. I have so many impressions that I couldn't possibly write them all, but here are a few of them: C11 The freshmen seem to be getting smaller and dumber every year. I mean this very seriously, and I know I'm not growing enough to make it seem that they're getting smaller. If they give Harmony half a chance, I think they'll come out of it. C21 I'll miss partici- pating in the sports events. Q39 I'l1 miss the feeling of knowing almost everybody. There will be so many strange faces in college. Q47 There are a fantastic number of students who are suffering under the pressure of high society. They are afraid to appear in any way dedicated to the school for fear someone will make fun. I'd like to see the day when other schools would shudder with the mere thought of competing with Harmony in any way. 455 Teachers seem to be more interested in students personally, and this makes me want to work harder to make better grades. , After all is said and done, I can look back and see bad and goodewith the latter away out in front- and if anyone ever asks me, I'1l be more than happy to say, I'm from HARMONY HIGH SCHOOL.
