Smutny. Smutny, whd died early last year, is accredited with many achievements in the Harmony community. He was a member of the law firm Frogner, Smutny, and Plowman, chairman f the Harmony school board, a past member of the Board of Directors of the Sunshine Place, past president of the Harmony LionsiClub, a member of the Harmony Jaycees, and past secretary of the] Harmony Civic and Commerce Associat ion. But to a lot o| people, Mike Smutny was more than just a public head. He was a friend, a confidant, someone to look up to. We feel that Mike is missed sorely in our community and more than deserves to be remembered fondly in our hearts. It is for these reasons we are leaving tjhis memorial for him. On the night before the big day, reigning King Gary Prinsen and Queen Nacia Johnson crowned the new King and Queen, Steve Prinsen and Kate Johnson. Our spirit was shown throughout the week through special activities such as a tug of war between all grades, hat day, and red and white day. Despite our great show of enthusiasm, the Cardinal football team lost a heartbreaking game to Preston-Fountain, the score 6-0. After the game a dance by the “Sirs” was put on by the Sophomores. 22 HOMECOMING 1981 S. Casterton, T. Willford, T. Olson, S. Barret, K. Johnson, S. Prinsen, T. Nagel, S. Schroeder, K. Ward, D. Ann Girolamo, and Deb Hanson have really amazed people with their ability. The girls really showed their improvement by beating Preston, a former tough opponent, by a comfortable margin. According to the newspapers, a chief factor in Harmony’s success is junior forward Tina Hanson. Hanson’s domination of the boards has led Harmony to many victories. In short, we believe that Harmony has a great future ahead of them! 42 GYMNASTICS First Row; B. Rueter, T. Kiehne, M. Miller, S. Prinson, L. Mensink, P. Taubert. Second Row; A. Hutton, R.Jacobson, S. The Gymnastics team was a very young team and improved throughout the year. The team was led by one senior, Deb Fishbaugher, through a very tough schedule. Though their record was 2-7, they lost very many close decisions that could have drastically improved their record. The Cards also participated in an Invitational in which the Cards, who finished sixth, had an individual, Amy Van Hoof, take first place honors on the floor. The strong nucleus of Sophomores and younger insure exciting gymnastic participation in the future. 44 VARSITY BASKETBALL First Row; J. Helem, F. Ryan, M. Mensink, J. Hanson, D. Harland, S. The Harmony Boys Basketball team had a respectable season this year and finished fourth in the conference. The Cards had five seniors and Harmony finished second in the Holiday Tournament. Harmony came on strong at the end and gave Preston a good fight before bowing out in the second round of tournaments. The team is losing 5 seniors and has only one returning starter but many players saw action so next year could be a surprise. Led by senior tri-captains Dale Mandelko, Chuck Phillips, and Glenn Warnke, the team finished the season with an outstanding record of 8 and 4. When districts rolled around, eight Harmony competitors finished in the top three places, therefore advancing to regions. At regions the team fell to some bad luck as none of the Harmony wrestlers placed high enough to advance to the state tournament. We are very proud of the wrestlers, and forsce a great future for them! Stats; Rachel Bjertness, Cindy Hanson 52 JUNIOR VARSITY WRESTLING J? rowA C Martin D- Torgerson, T. Jacobson, D. Miller, J. In vying for the conference title, the girls were able to pull off a first place tie, their competition again being Caledonia. During district competition Harmony had two representatives, Rosanne Bigalk and Becky Wilt. At the end of the day Becky came out a victor and went on to place in state competition. All in all, the girls show an excellent future! First Row: S. Taubert D. Evenson B. Wilt K. Jacobson A. Storhoff J. Boice Second Row: R. Bigalk K. Rahm S. Peters D. Johns S. Hanlon D. Johns BOYS GOLF The 1980-81 boys golf team had a season of ups and downs. They won the conference for the second consecutive year. They also successfully defended their title in the Lewiston invitational. When district rolled around they had a very disappointing day. The team didn’t finish in the top three and had only one man going on to regions. At regions Chris Hames failed to qualify for state by one stroke. First Row: K. Sikkink E. Webster P. Ryan D. One reason for the extra spirit was the new members the team acquired. These new members were three girls. Needless to say, the girls sparked a lot of curiosity and were even interviewed by channel KTTC news. Rumors of new players provides hope for a great future in the baseball. First Row: T. Kraling C. The rabbit (Chris Johns) is the first charac ter she meets but that is only the start. On the road, Alice meets the tyrant Queen of Hearts (VVendi Storhoff) and of course the King (Chris Hames). Throughout the trek to the croquet grounds, Alice meets the Mouse (Kris Van Hoof), the Caterpillar (Becky Wilt), The Fish Footman and Frog Footman (Cliff Flatten and Tori Austin)’, The Cook, Duchess and Chesire Cat (Deb Fishbaugher, Kay Schoppers and Deb Brunsvold) and even visits the tea party with the March Hare, Dormouse and Mad Hatter (Joe Mudfrom. Anita Jaeh and Scott 1'aubert). Alice meets the Gryphon and Mock Turtle (Kris Bigalk and Brad Boice) but she is arrested and given a mock trial from which she escapes and is being chased. The end comes in a fast and furious way as the outstanding scenes are ahead. Twiddle Dee and Twiddle Dum (Vince Ryan and Gary Prinsen) captivated the audience as did Humpty Dumpty with pun after pun. The story closes with Alice being crowned a queen by the Red and White Queens (lina Hanson and Rachel Trouten). Then a mass party follows 58 ONE ACT PLAYS For the first time in the last couple years Harmony had a one-act play. The interest spread so that Harmony could have three one-act plays though only one went on to contests. The one-act plays due to lack of interest may be cut but if such an improvement is made on them each year as this one it may survive. Actors who participated in one or more of the plays were: Kris Van Hoof, Steve Casterton, Rosanne Bigalk. Scott Taubert, Dave Smutny, Sheila Danielson, Karen Anderson, Cliff Flatten, Rachel Bjertness, Tina Hanson, Cindy Hanson, Cindy Browning, Julie Ingelbret, Ann Dahl. 59 Prom 1981 On May 2, 1981, the juniors sponsored Prom. As in the past the formal celebration started with the banquet held in the lunchroom. The five speeches given at this time were: The Will by Vince Ryan, The Welcome by Ann Girolamo, The Prophesy by Chris Johns, The Invocation by Mike Smutny and The Benediction by Tammy Nagel (Not Pictured). The scene shifted to the Old Gym where the Juniors had decorated it to the theme: “Keep On Loving You!!” The Sophomore Waiters: Dave Hanson, Dave Smutny, Glen I vers, Jeff Twait, Phil Ryan, and the Waitresses: Rosanne Bigalk, Kris VanHoof, Tina Hanson, Karen Anderson, Sheila Danielson served popcorn and punch while the Juniors, Seniors and Teachers dance to DIONYSUS. Prom night is a very special night for everyone and many memories come from this great night. 61 62 63 m GOODBYE MY LOVE MAYBE FOR FOREVER GOODBYE MY LOVE THE TIDE WAITS FOR ME WHO KNOWS WHEN WE SHALL MEET AGAIN IF EVER, BUT TIME KEEPS FLOWING LIKE A RIVER TO THE SEA, TO THE SEA TILL IT’S GONE FOREVER GONE FOREVER GONE FOREVER Karen Anderson Lana Applen Tori Austin Denise Ayres Karolin Bigalk Rosanne Bigalk Scott Bigalk Rachel Bjertness Jane Boice Bill Caldwell Sheila Danielson Gordy Dornink Tommy Erickson Dana Ewajt Bryan Fishbaugher Cindy Hanson Dave Hanson Tina Hanson Heidi Harstad Kevin Heibel Todd Hendrickson Tim Herrnanaon Glenn Ivers Andy Jaeb Brett Jarland Mark Mensink Angie Miller Darrell Miller Larry Pfremmer Lois Reicks Phil Ryan Kevin Sikkink Dave Smutny Scott Taubert Jeff Twait Clay Ullom Kris VanHoof Neal Vikre Becky Wilt 65 Cherrie Brink Barb Brunvold Jeff Casterton Janet Cremer John Dennstedt Mark Flatten Dave Gillund Randy Griffin Karen Hanlon Jay Hanson Kim Heibel Jim Helium Julie Hoag Michele Howard Kathy Jacobson Debbie Johns Diane Johns Bill Johnson Mary Johnson Tim Kiehne Brent Kraling Andrea Mensink Lori Mensink Mel Mill Kris Morris Kelly Nordsving Annette Peters Bill Peterson Chris Scrabeck Susan Tammel Roger Torgerson Randy Torkelson Susan Trende Shelley Twait Arvin VanderPlas Amy VanHoof 66 Arlo Warnke Tina Young Kendall Bigalk Kris Bigalk Tim Burkholder Bob Casterton Ann Dahl Brian Funke Mike Girolamo Craig Hanson Jodi Helium Scott Hendrickson Ben Holmes Teresa Jacobson F R Matt Jarland Todd Johannson Jerry Johnson f Ut Doug Kiebne Kris Kiehne Karen Kingsley Troy Krating Bob Lange Chris Martin Jim Reicks Kent Runkel Amy Scheevel Jackie Scrabeck Mike Sikkink Stacy Taubert Jill Tomlonson Kim Vaghts 67 Suzanne Alfson Konya Austin Karen Bigalk Jodi Boice Kaye Brown Cindy Browning Mary Dahl Renee Dempwolf Tom Dennstedt Julie Engle Trade Erickson Dawn Evenson Jim Frye Brad Funke Chay Hang Sharon Hanlon Joleen Hanson Tom Hutton Julie Inglebret Toby Jacobson Paul Kiehne Terry Kraling Scott Mandelko Roger Meldahl Leanne Mensink Danny Miller Darla Patterson Curt Pfremraer Matt Plowman Kevin Sikkink Tim Sikking Scott Spieker Andrea Storholl Dean Torgerson Brad Twait Shannon Twait Mark Vagts Jennifer VanderPlas Eric Webster Jodi Whalen Keri Whalen Tera Willford 68 Tonya Bestor Richard Bigalk Tyler Davison Carolyn East Sharon Elton Sondra Elton Todd Emanuel David Garness Kraig Gillund Andrea Hutton Dean Johns Vernon Kerns Terisa Kiehne Casey Martin Kim Matson Angela McCabe Pat McKernan Kelly Miller Melina Miller Jeff Nagel Chris Pfremmer Shannon Prinsen Beth Reuter Michele Soma Ok w 1 Peggy Taubert Tonia Thomann Lynn Thomas Daniel Torgerson Michelle Torkelson Michelle Vagts Julie Whalen Travis Willford Thomas Young 69 STUDENT COUNCIL First Row: Kendall Bigalk, Rob Lange. Working on a yearbook is a very valuable experience and teaches you many things. My Co-editors Tammy Nagel and Kris Van Hoof were excellent and we put in many trying hours. Throughout the year, Roger Buchholz our advisor did a great job working with us. The thing he helped most was organization because we were not the most-organized editors as evidenced by losing the annual staff picture. We’ve loved working on the annual, it is a real honor to be chosen as an editor and we hope you like the book.
