Bill Michel The 1979 Football season began on August thirteen with high hopes and dreams of victory. After two weeks of conditioning, the team met its first opponent and conquered it. The dream went on and so did the victories. The only flaws in a perfect record were two losses: one against LeRoy-Ostrander and the other against Bird Island—Lake Lillian. The Cardinals outstanding 12 record will be remembered. Coaches Elston and Ofstedal led their young men to the State Class C Championship game against Bird Island-Lake Lillian and came home the second best team in the state. One team member, running back and linebacker. Gary Prinsen. was selected for the All State Football team. The school spirit, as exemplified in the Ramblerettes—the women of the Rambler—motivated the team before the games: and community support was great and much appreciated. Playing to full houses on November 8 and 10. members of the multi-talented troupe performed various numbers from the world of Musical Comedy on the High School stage. Vocal solos as well as ensembles were done with full choreography, make-up. and costumes. Students were required to do their own make-up. and many created costumes for thsmselves and others. It gave many students an opportunity to be involved in some form of theatrical experience, whether actually performing, or being a member of the technical crew. The Garden Cabaret Guys and Dolls: M. The Cardinals weren’t quite enough to dethrone the more experienced Spring Valley team. The Cardinals only two losses of the year came to Spring Valley by a total of two strokes! The varsity regulars this year consisted of Jon Storoff. Bill Michel. Shawn Tornow. Scott Evenson and Scott Taubert. Steve Harms. Gordon Hanson. Chris Johns and Dave Smutny also filled in on varsity throughout the year. In the District Tournament Harmony was well represented as they took a very close third in the team standings with eight teams competing. Harmony was less than ten strokes off of LaCrescent’s first place. On the individual side of the tournament the Cardinals again faired well as eighth grader Scott Taubert. ninth grader Scott Evenson and junior Shawn Tornow. all qualified to advance to Region One play at Rochester. As it looks now the 1980 season should be even more productive as all the varsity will return and one more year can only mean one thing . . . Improvement! Varsity Golfers: Jon Storhoff.
