Marlys Jacobson Between the Gt overs (graduates OfJministraiion a asses Oflkletics Oft)veriisinq Progress evolves from a combination of many factors working in unison. As living becomes more complex, progress is centered more and more in the character, loyalty, and unselfishness of human beings. Progress is synonymous with democracy and both result from human intelligence and mutual understanding — accepting the challenge of the cooperative effort for the greatest good to the greatest number. The 1949 Cardinal is dedicated to all people, because they all are a part of progress in democracy We salute you, the Seniors of 1949, for your splendid contributions to progress in Harmony High School. Accent our best wishes for future success. - K dedication Youth is inclined sometimes to take things for granted; to forget the effort and sacrifices that have been made to make his education in a beautiful well-equipped school possible; to consider lightly the time and money spent in keeping his community abreast with the times with stately churches, an up-to-date hospital, a lighted athletic field, lovely parks and playgrounds. To the people of Harmony who have made all these things and countless others possible, we humbly dedicate this book in the hope that it will express, in some small measure, our appreciation. foreword In the 1949 Cardinal we have tried to portray a picture of our school days by group and individual pictures. Through students' art work, we have endeavored to develop our theme, progress, by drawings of improvements in our community. May this book of our school days, which are now but memories, bring back many moments of pleasant reminiscing. We hope that it will please you. f8] 19 J DIVISION EDITOR—MARLYS JACOBSON Horace John Olson Band 1, 2, 3, 4; Band Solo Work 2; Mixed Chorus 1, 2, 3, 4; Boys’ Glee Club 3, 4; Octette 2; Solo Work 2, 3; Operetta 2; Football 1, 2, 3, 4; Basketball 1, 2, 3, 4; Baseball 2, 3, 4; Declamation 3; Cardeon Staff 1, 2, 3, 4; Cardinal Staff 1, 2, 3, 4; Class Play 3; Student Council 2; Class Officer 3; Homecoming Royalty 4; Movie Projectionist 1, 2, 3. 4. When autumn came in 1948, an extra special thrill raced up and down our spines as we suddenly realized that we were juniors. To all of us, it meant more interesting class work, as well as parties, dancing, singing, cheering, and all the activities that make for an abundant school life; and we have made the most of them. In retrospect, we have had a wonderful year together. Time will lend a certain endearing and mellowing effect to the many activities in which we participated. There was a unity of purpose and general understanding as we discussed parties, our class play, Take Your Medicine , and the year's big social event—the Prom. We have learned a great deal this past year and we hope as seniors next year we shall find our school life equally interesting. We look to the future with a firm resolution to do our best. Under the direction of Mr. Ronald Schenck, our band of forty-one members presented a winter concert and played at all football and basketball games. Performing at the homecoming festivities will long be remembered. They marched through town and performed on the gridiron. The Band Mothers' Club, which contributed time, effort, and money to help buy their present uniforms, are now working to buy new and different ones. They served refreshments all four nights of the tournament. r , JUNIOR BAND—Front Row, left to right: D. Hoiness, M. Pederson, A. Armstrong, D. Hutton, [ 39 1 C. Sechrist, J. Griebenow, R. From the onset of the football season, the experienced Cards had their eyes on the district championship crown. Running into stubborn opposition in their first game, they barely eked out a 7-0 victory from Preston. The Cards took the next two games with Mabel and Lanesboro in stride by scores of 24-6 and 13-7 respectively. Although the Cardinals outplayed the Gophers, Chatfield defeated them 12-0. Bouncing back from their only defeat of the season, Harmony drubbed Caledonia 34-6 and Spring Grove 31-0 to cinch second place in the conference. The boys and Coach Novotny are to be congratulated on their fine performances. Talkin' it over—Left to right: Asst. Coach, John Carlson; C. Dennstedt, A. Johnson, W. Bestor, R. In tournament play, they chalked up consolation honors. Winning 16 out of 19 possible games, the Cards ran over all opposition in District I, their only losses being two non-conference affairs to the Winona Teachers B” 42-31 and Winona Cotter 39-36. The two games which will be remembered for a long time by local basketball fans are the 34-32 win over Chatfield in conference play and the 42-39 overtime loss to Chat-field in the semi-finals of the District I tournament in Harmony.
