I would hope that each person involved in the functioning of this school has made a profit as a great as his investment. May this annual portray your past investments and profits as well as indicate the future rewards that might be yours. Darrel Stoll, Principal It has been said that man is the only living thing that classifies, therefore, let this book portray the stu- dent groups to the extent that they help in the func- tioning of a school to further classify. This book shows groups by grades, by activities, by purpose, by goals achieved. It distinguishes fun groups from serious groups, physical training from mental development, tall from short, boys from girls, young from old, and others not apparent to me. One can draw a final sum- mation that this annual like annuals before it can serve only as a pictorial history of school events for the year 1970-71. May the senior class of 1971 have progressed through the classified groups to such an extent that they have gained the ability to decide which group they best fit. May the training that they have re- ceived during this period of formal education have prepared them to meet the challenge which lies ahead. Good Luck and may you all become fear- less leaders of your group. Joseph Fahn, Superintendent 4 Mr. Gerald Clausen Western Montana College U.S. History, P.A.D., Bookkeeping, Head Basketball Coach. The follow- ing day the seniors initiated the freshmen. They met in the locker rooms and the seniors proceeded to dress the freshmen in the most uncomfortable, outlandish costumes imaginable. During a student assembly, the initiates ate spaghetti blindfolded, pushed coins across the floor with their noses, and saluted the seniors. This began the hectic week of Homecoming. 32 Homecoming Parade High School Band Key Club Float Student Teachers 33 B Squad Cheerleaders On Friday, the homecoming parade was lead through the downtown district by the A and B squad cheerleaders. In the center of the downtown area, the students partic- pated in cheers after which the HHS band played a few songs. This year for the first time student teachers entered a float for which they received an honorable mention. During the week preceeding the Home- coming game, floats were frantically construct- ed by members of each class. Prior to the game the floats and candidates were displayed in a parade through the downtown area. A tranquil day prevented the floats from being blown apart this year. An exciting hay fight ended the night's festivities. 40 Best dressed Hippie Girl Debbie Biegel It has been said at many general assemblies that the student body of HHS is one of the best dressed. On April 16 of this year, however, this was prob- ably not true. Designated Hippie Day by the Stu- dent Senate, the day was filled with laughter, peace signs and really wild costumes. At a Student Assembly, the best dressed hippie boy and girl were presented with trophies; they were Debbie Biegel and Roger Mager. JUNIOR PROM King Jim Sanders Queen Jane Alexander Princess Janie Johnson Prince Ted Blum Leaders Shannon Murphey and Barry Mumion Phil Biggs, Junior Class Vice-President, crowns Jane Alexander Queen. Patricia Erbe, Junior Class President, crowns Jim Sanders King. 42 JAPANESE TEA GARDEN Crepe paper, glue, thousands of staples, and plenty of hard work merged beautifully to form the 1971 Junior Prom. A tea house, blos- soming cherry trees, cranes, irises, lilies, and Japanese scenes helped carry out the theme, Japanese Tea Garden. The entire class took part in the actual construction, which began a week before the prom date, May 1. Mural, tea-house, fence and flower committees cut, taped, stapled, and scrubbed to meet the April 30 deadline. The deadline was met, and over 80 couples walked through a crepe paper arch into a beautiful tea garden on Saturday night. The Grand March FFA-FHA Ball Queen Althea Fochs and King Nathan Davis Skip Day I I Skip day, an annual Senior event, was held at Chico Hot Springs. An ingenious scheme ended abortively when an ambulance was called. mm BANQUET Each year the seniors' mothers put on a banquet for the graduating seniors. This year's guest speaker at the banquet was State Senator Jim Moore. The mothers provided entertainment in the form of a humorous skit. Government Introduction of Head Table This year's Government Day was held on May 11. To begin the busy, exciting day, Rick Olson, Chairman of Govt. Day led the student body in the Pledge of Allegiance. Harlo Students were honored to have the three MASC (Montana Association of Student Councils) officers as their guests. They were Bill Saubert, President; and Mary DeNevi. Secretary. During the day, questioning of candidates, class elections, and cheerleading tryouts were conducted. Government Day con- cluded the last big project for this years Stu- dent Senate. Chairman Rick Olson Student Body President Doug Nissen 46 Candidates wait to give their final speech. Graduation The class of 1971 was graduated on May 18. Mr. Howard Porter was guest speaker at the cere- mony. When courage was needed they had it. When pride was of the essence of importance, the Maroon and Gold stood out with illumination. When team work was called on, 23 FIGHTING ENGINEERS were there. Although our season did not bring the championship, it gave me the everlasting friendship of 23 young men and 12 that have my best re- gards for what ever the future may hold for them. May all future Engineer football seasons be as re- warding and successful as the 1970 season. 61 Coach Jim Meyers Conference Scores Harlowton 46 Lodge Grass 0 Harlowton 50 Absarokee 12 Harlowton 8 Big Timber 20 Harlowton 63 Columbus 12 Harlowton 16 Roundup 18 Harlowton 16 Huntley Project 22 Harlowton 14 Red Lodge 14 Row 1: T.
