Text from Pages 1 - 60 of the 1953 volume:

Published by STUDENT COUNCIL of HARLOWTON HIGH SCHOOL Harlowton, Montana 1952-1953 Dedicated to all those persons without whose help this Annual would not have been possible, and espe- cially to the School Board, Teachers, and Graduating Seniors of 1953. We hope that in years to come this book will bring back memories of happy days. Board of Education Superintendent Message The desire to learn has always been a primary drive of mankind. Our America is strong and great because its people have had the opportunity to learn. The free public school is basic in our way of life. It is my hope that the members of the class of 1953, have received from the Harlowton High School, the kind of training that will help them toward a sound faith and a belief in God; finer home and family life, better government, more productive agriculture, sound- er health, more efficient industry and a free mind to develop skills and inculcate ideals. I am sure that your parents, teachers, and the mem- bers of the Board of Trustees iterate my hope, and join me in bidding you, Auf Weidersehen. D. T. His only aim was to do the job right and this he did with very great pride. In the end his heart just couldn't carry the load of work that he imposed upon it. Gus was loved by all who knew him. Alumni who came back to visit the school asked first to see our beloved Gus. This boy has quite a nick name, That is the source of most of his fame. We the class of 53 A small bunch as you can see. Are gathered here to say goodbye. Farewell to good ole Harlo Hi. Our beloved Senior Class Sponsor, Who has a girl and really wants her Of all commercial subjects is the boss, His last name is Jones, his first is Ross. Byron Berg, our Senior Class President, Who of Martinsdale is a resident. Was in P. A. D. quite a flash. But often tangled with Mr. Nash. Now our Prom Queen Barbara Brammer, Our class is really proud to claimer. She is friendly and makes a lot of noise Especially when around the boys. For Stanton Brannin who we all call Red, Because of the hair on the top of his head. We couldn't think of anything else to say So we'll just leave it this a way. Tom Cavanaugh the daddy of us all. Who comes at Neva's beckoning call. In football he always ran very hard. But now he runs for the National Guard. Janet Davis who comes from Martinsdale, To all of us is a good looking female. On the sax she plays very loud, But it sounds so nice it makes us proud. Charlotte Dole a shy little lass, Dresses well and has lots of class, She is a very likeable sort. And always is a very good sport. There is a guy in our class who's name is Glennie, When it comes to dollars he has many. Pete was elected Auditor at Boys’ State, We all think that is really great. Alice Jenkins is our soda jerk kid, If she sees that blue Nash she flips her lid. She plays the French Horn in the band, And to us she is the best in the land. This girl goes with a boy who is quite charmin, A sailor boy whose name is Roy Harmon. When it comes to piano playing she is always ready, Her last name is Lyons, her first is Betty. The genius of our class is Louie, Some of his concoctions are quite screwy. To be a mad scientist is Manseau's ambition, But he'll probably end up going fishin. Shirley Nelson who is crazy about horses. Would rather ride them, than study her courses. To go to college she says is her plan, But she'll probably end up getting hitched to a man. The next joker is a boy named Cal, To all of us is really a pal. He drives a chevvy Oh So Fine, iThat’s the way he keeps Sharon on the line. To Ron Newman our Photographer friend. Whose Camera to us would never lend. In all the classes he is quite a Speaker, But Lois can usually make him meeker. Through most of the state for good old Dewey, Will any of the girls ever say phooey. Skipping school is his favorite routine. And with many girls is often seen. Virginia Peterson our country girl, Over a Fairfield boy is in a twirl. She is a very fine musician. And a good career for her we're wishin. Bernice Quigley who is a telephone operator, With the whole class is a real top rater. Her work is hardly ever a flop, Because around school works her pop. June Satake who is always very jolly. We predict her life will never be a folly. She doesn't figure on going to college, Because at her advanced age she has plenty of knowledge. This guy who made the all conference team, W as with all the girls quite a dream. And then came along a girl named Dee, Ken Scally is his name, you see. This guy's name is Ken Sweet, And to the Adv. Math Class he’s quite a treat. A blue ribbon he won at High School Week, But with the girls, Ken is kind of meek. Wedding Bells are ringing for this young miss, And the one at the altar won't be her first kiss, This young body has really got her man. Your name will no longer be Willems will it Fran. Arlene who in the band plays the clarinet. Always looked twice at every man she met. At commercial she is quite a whiz. You all know who Wirth is. Senior Class Prophecy This is station H-A-R-L-0 coming to you from Harlowton, Montana. It is bringing to you the history of the class of 1953 in this year of our Lord, 1963- Now we get with the show! We switch our channels to Illinois. The scene focuses on a College in which we see an old classmate, Kenny Scally the Great! He’s coaching the famous football team of the University of Illinois. He tells us that he and his beauti- ful wife, Deloris, who graduated in 54 are happily married with three cute, curly headed children. Now we hear beautiful music and the scene changes to find to our great astonishment, Virginia Peterson directing the Phil-harmonical orchestra in an open air concert in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia In her spare time she has a handsome(o-la-la) pianist on the string. I've heard rumors that the date is set, but she wouldn’t indulge any information. Lucky-guy. Now the scene changes, oh-look at the girls among the Palm trees. Dewey Olson enters in on the scene to explain this; He says: This is Hawaii but no one could guess what I'm doing? I have been seeing the world, since I've had my honorable discharge from the infantry. I have been pulling the wool over the eyes of approximately 20 girls. Same ol Dewey. As long as they don’t mind, neither do I. They pay me for touring them all over the world. I have a problem now; How can I get them away from this place? Well, he seems to be in an occupa- tion that he seems to enjoy so we will leave him to his girls. Oh! it’s June Satake giving hair styling lessons. June has her own beauty parlor near the campus at Bozeman College called The June Bug . She informs me that if any of the old class of 53 wants to learn hair styling or wants a new hair do, come and see her as she would gladly give them a free sample. Well: she is the same old June. This wonderful television is the idea of our own Ronald Newman. The color that you see is also an invention of Ronnie's. He is married to Lois Hawkins and they have six boys. Most of the time you can find the boys attempting to climb the antenna on the television sets. Ah-Ha a beautiful home in California, there is a two month old baby on the porch. Here is Charlotte Dole who has been married twc years. She has graduated from a Laboratory Technician School and also has her R. N. degree. Say Charlotte; what happened to that Old Maids Hermit Club? We find Tommy Cavanaugh still taking life easy. After Graduation he went into the service. He is now General Ridgeway's right-hand man, so now he sits behind the desk with his feet on top. Tommy hasn’t settled down as he still likes all the girls. Neva Ross is still waiting patiently for Tom to get out of General Ridgeway’s hair. Arlene Wirth is taking messages from the president. She has been working on telegraphy for the past ten years, but she seems more in- terested in the maintenance crew near by. She tells us that she has spent her last ten years trying to get a certain necklace back, but she'd forget about it if she could get a ring. Arlene is really keeping in the business as she owns a reducing home in Chicago. Why she even keeps the President's wife in shape Next, after consulting the F.B.I. agency, we find Badman Berg, Public Enemy No. I, running a hot car racket throughout the United States. His chief headquarters are located in Martinsdale, hidden under cover of the great Berg Garage. I wonder why he continues this rac- ket, must be making millions. The F.B.I. are even afraid of him. Is he married, you ask? The F.B.I. wouldn't tell us. It must be a dark deep secret. What's this we hear: Violins squeaking at that. We can see a lovely home where we find Betty Lyons teaching her two blonde twin boys which, by the way, are dressed in twin sailor suits, to play the violins. After a short talk with Be ty we find out that she is happily married and teaches lessons on the piano and violin, which keeps her busy along with her two sailors. Who do we find helping the state of Montana, our congressman Stanton Brannin. He spends his spare time with his red headed kids and his pretty wife on his dude ranch on the American Fork. What’s this comming into focus, ballerina dancing? What, in the Harlo High gymnasium. Oh my gosh, this is thrilling for words, the dark-haired, tall girl you see on your left is our own Bernice Ouigley, the director of these popular ballerina dancers. She is doing a wonder- ful job! Bernice informs us that she is married and has three girls and five boys. Success has been her way. We now switch the television channel to dear old Harlo High, where we find Bill Miller busily working to be a judge for the F.F.A. under the supervision of Mr. G. D. Lammers. Bill has had a little trouble, it seems that Mr. Lammers likes him so well he doesn’t want to let him go. Here we see Barbara Brammer pulling and pushing plugs in the telephone office. In between pulls we see her reading her many letters she gets from her ex-boyfriends. In her spare time we see her in a big soft chair gazing at a picture from the South Pacific. On the highest peak on the Crazy Mountains we find Lewis Manseau looking through a telescope studying the moon and the lady in the stars. We find that his blonde wife aids him in his constant study and photography of the moon and stars. Whoa--here we have a horse race—and here’s the finish--who’s the girl going to stand by the winner. It's our own Shirley Nelson married now and owner and operator of the Western racing stables located on the Madision in Montana. She's putting her R. N. degree to good use, raising three little jockeys along with her husband’s injuries sustained from calf roping. We now switch our channel to Rochester where we see our famous Kenneth Sweet M.D. as a special physician aided by his male assistant, Kenny never got married because of his shyness of girls. We now switch our channel to the coast, where we find Calvin Ness M.D. busy in the Vets. Hospital which he is in charge of. He doesn't have any time, but from his lovely wife Sharon we learn of his beautiful home and two small girls. Good Luck, Cal. Now we see a trailor house with a side handmoving terrace, on this we see our own Francis Willems and her three sets of twin boys. After talking to her we find she is happily keeping house for her husband and her blonde curly headed twins. My, what a roar, the big planes make, we can hardly hear one another shout as we drive out to meet the plane. The planes small side door opens. Yes, there she is, Miss Janet Davis, flight nurse of Uncle Sam. She takes care of her patients' before she even gives us a glance, good nurse. After a talk with Janet, we learn she completed her nursing at Bozeman in three years. When she is released from flight nursing, if she's not married, she will go on to get her B.S, degree. Good luck, Janet. Now we switch our channel to a modern grade school building where the first grade class is just being let out by a beautiful girl, our own Alice Jenkins. After going to college in Havre and Billings she started teaching the first grade. A black Nash car is parked out in front of the building: Could it be the young carpenter, Junior Schultz? Now we tune in on time to hear Pete Glennie, the sports announcer who recently took over Bill Stern's place, who has just retired. He is announcing the Rose Bowl game from Pasadena, California, from the Rose Bowl stadium. Pete is also doing very fine at family life. He now has a red-headed wife and ten children. Last of all we switch our channel to Spokane, Washington, where we see Ross Jones, our sponsor, working very hard. After working for five years to get to Spokane, we do hope he can make it to California now. In his spare time, he works to provide gas for his new Buick and he tells us, his secret of all is Wedding Bells. After graduating the class of 53 , Mr. Jelinek decided he was tired of chasing wild students, so he decided to open a school of public C Of O 3 1 1 C Tp V 1 1 n O 1 P 1 r i i Y 1 i r' f r QO k LIqpq __________ A LITHOGRAPHED YEARBOOK DALLAS • TEXAS
