Coach - Mr. Tampke, girl's captain - Desiree Reynolds, team captain - Manuel Lopez, boy's captain - Mike Garza, The Harlingen Cardinals proved that they were still Champions of District 8-AAA by winning their second district crown in a row. The Cardinals won first place in two tournaments this year, the San An- tonio Invitational Toumament and the Brownsville Tournament. The Cards also won second in the Donna Tournament. Winning 30 games while losing only 3,the Cardinals compiled the best record in basket- ball history of Harlingen High School. This year's team composed of seven seniors and three juniors top last year's District Champions. The Cards were favored to win only second place in the pre-season polls. Under the capable coaching of Eldon Long and with the desire to win, these ten boys will journey to meet San Antonio's Edison Bears in Bi-District to see who goes to the State Tournament in March. The Cardinals have beaten Edison once this year. Due to a printing dead- line the information cannot be put in this write-up, but will appear on pages 72 and 73. The Cardinals were the only players to go to State from the Valley in several years. The Cardinals are the Bi- District champions of South Texas. They beat Edison in the best 2 out of 3 series. Losing the first game in San Antonio, the Cards came home to their bam and won the next two games in a row. The Cardinals not only proved their excellence by winning fourth in the State, but they proved that ten boys, a manager, and a coaeh could work and play together without jealousy and des- cension that sometimes mar a good team's record. Six members of the ten on the team have played basketball together for six years. They started playing basketball under Coach Long and ended their playing career under him. This team may soon be forgotten by the students, but will never be forgotten by the ones that worked, laughed, and played to- gether to form it, hwhl, DISTRICT 8'AAA B TEAM CHAMPIONS Top Row, left to right: Coach Killough, Ronnie Davis, Fred Hastings, Kenneth Williams, Noel Solis, Elwin Manning.
