June 13, 1952 Dear Seniors: Take up the hammer you have forgedl Withstand temptation to deplore its size and shapeg And with it, and the nails that you have found And all the salvage which has come aground, Build for yourself and for your fellow-men A place wherein you all can dwell in peace. Keep purpose firm and vision clear. Design the best you can from that you see and know, But keep your hammer ever swinging free For only fed by effort can inspiration grow. Pray hard for divine guidance for your arm, But only you can really strike the blow. Lawrence W. Utter Director Build straight and true whenever sight allows, And give your structure every strength you can, But as your judgment clears, allow for change, For patch on patch does well become evolving man, And contemplation nurtured not on time and toil Will never bring the best or final plan. Play not at being God, nor dwell in ivory tower. Give every age and attribute its due. A thousand, thousand men must share your task And countless others lend support before you're through. But know full well you must and will and can Do all those things which best are done by you. Take up the hammer you have forged!
