U18 Clifton M. Whiting Assistant Director Dear Smiors: I write this to you on mid-year day of our school year 1951-'52. Always when that day comes, I suddenly realize that another year of our Harley life is almost over. Somdxow, the time from February to June is much shorter than the time from September to February. But this thought didn't get really fright- ening until I suddenly realized something else.-That if I'm privileged to be at Harley until the usual age of retirement, this is not only the mid-day of a Harley year, it is also the mid-year of my Harley life! -And I'm afraid that the remaining years will pass with the same comparative speed as do the last half of the days of a school year. I hope they don't, because I want lots of time to enjoy my memories of you, and the pleasure of knowing your children. But whether my Harley Commencement comes in 1971, or before, Harley has given to my life's work. And from it, I think these are the things I'll best remenber: You, you who came before, and you who will followg The sound of play coming through the o en windows in springg The quiet times, when just you and I talked togetherg The smell of apple blossoms from the long-gone orchardg The wisdom, guidance, and leadership of our directorsg The old bust Caudlelightg And Commencementg An embryo biologist, thrilled with finding the suprapharyngeal ganglion of Lumlxicus Terristrisg Walks we've had in the woods-some when the sun was shining-some when hundreds of fungi were bursting with the life given to them from days of raing Our trees growingg The drafty tunnel, and the science room up under the eavesg New Seventh Graders, wondering what the future holdsg New Eighth Graders, not caring what the future holds: New Ninth Graders, kinetic, confused, yet caringg New Tenth Graders, starting all over againg New Eleventh Graders, findin some snswersg New Seniors, having most adult virtues and vices, Graduating Seniors, wondering what the future holds.

Dear Miss Neal, When we recollect our days at Harley, one of our first memories will be of you. Through high school we have been envious of the seniors, and looked forward to the day when we would be Sel1i0l'S too, and be able to share our experiences with you. We think one of the reasons each senior class has been better than the one before is because you have been there to encourage and to sympathize with each one, and have entered in the fun and work with your humor and enthusiasm. To each new class, you bring along the experiences you've shared with the ones before. You have expected the best from us, and because of that, we have tried to live up to your hopes, so that you and the rest of Harley would be proud of us. When we are with you we feel the Harley spirit, omething impossible to define be- cause of its intangible qualities. It is a combination of all the faculty, students, alumni, and experiences of Harley, and since you've been a part of Harley for so long, and have given so much time, effort, and thought to it, Miss Neal and Harley are almost synony- mous. We feel very lucky being your last senior class and are trying to make it the best class ever. Harley will lose a great deal when you leave, but your spirit and all you have done for Harley will still remain. Harley would not have been as wonderful as it is without you, and we want to thank you for your years of loyalty here. We wish you much happiness in the years to come. From your loving and last Senior Class, 7
