June 13, 1952 Dear Seniors: Take up the hammer you have forgedl Withstand temptation to deplore its size and shapeg And with it, and the nails that you have found And all the salvage which has come aground, Build for yourself and for your fellow-men A place wherein you all can dwell in peace. Keep purpose firm and vision clear. Design the best you can from that you see and know, But keep your hammer ever swinging free For only fed by effort can inspiration grow. Pray hard for divine guidance for your arm, But only you can really strike the blow. Lawrence W. Utter Director Build straight and true whenever sight allows, And give your structure every strength you can, But as your judgment clears, allow for change, For patch on patch does well become evolving man, And contemplation nurtured not on time and toil Will never bring the best or final plan. Play not at being God, nor dwell in ivory tower. Give every age and attribute its due. A thousand, thousand men must share your task And countless others lend support before you're through. But know full well you must and will and can Do all those things which best are done by you. Take up the hammer you have forged! Withstand temptation to deplore its size and shapeg And with it and the nails that you have found, And all the salvage which has come aground, Build for yourself and for your fellow-men A place wherein you all can dwell in peace. With love, Larry Utter 4 U18 Clifton M. Whiting Assistant Director Dear Smiors: I write this to you on mid-year day of our school year 1951-'52. Always when that day comes, I suddenly realize that another year of our Harley life is almost over. Somdxow, the time from February to June is much shorter than the time from September to February. But this thought didn't get really fright- ening until I suddenly realized something else.-That if I'm privileged to be at Harley until the usual age of retirement, this is not only the mid-day of a Harley year, it is also the mid-year of my Harley life! -And I'm afraid that the remaining years will pass with the same comparative speed as do the last half of the days of a school year. I hope they don't, because I want lots of time to enjoy my memories of you, and the pleasure of knowing your children. But whether my Harley Commencement comes in 1971, or before, Harley has given to my life's work. And from it, I think these are the things I'll best remenber: You, you who came before, and you who will followg The sound of play coming through the o en windows in springg The quiet times, when just you and I talked togetherg The smell of apple blossoms from the long-gone orchardg The wisdom, guidance, and leadership of our directorsg The old bust Caudlelightg And Commencementg An embryo biologist, thrilled with finding the suprapharyngeal ganglion of Lumlxicus Terristrisg Walks we've had in the woods-some when the sun was shining-some when hundreds of fungi were bursting with the life given to them from days of raing Our trees growingg The drafty tunnel, and the science room up under the eavesg New Seventh Graders, wondering what the future holdsg New Eighth Graders, not caring what the future holds: New Ninth Graders, kinetic, confused, yet caringg New Tenth Graders, starting all over againg New Eleventh Graders, findin some snswersg New Seniors, having most adult virtues and vices, Graduating Seniors, wondering what the future holds. Wudvful ' WJW7 5 MQMM My , 5,4 mg, Dear Miss Neal, When we recollect our days at Harley, one of our first memories will be of you. Through high school we have been envious of the seniors, and looked forward to the day when we would be Sel1i0l'S too, and be able to share our experiences with you. We think one of the reasons each senior class has been better than the one before is because you have been there to encourage and to sympathize with each one, and have entered in the fun and work with your humor and enthusiasm. To each new class, you bring along the experiences you've shared with the ones before. You have expected the best from us, and because of that, we have tried to live up to your hopes, so that you and the rest of Harley would be proud of us. When we are with you we feel the Harley spirit, omething impossible to define be- cause of its intangible qualities. It is a combination of all the faculty, students, alumni, and experiences of Harley, and since you've been a part of Harley for so long, and have given so much time, effort, and thought to it, Miss Neal and Harley are almost synony- mous. We feel very lucky being your last senior class and are trying to make it the best class ever. Harley will lose a great deal when you leave, but your spirit and all you have done for Harley will still remain. Harley would not have been as wonderful as it is without you, and we want to thank you for your years of loyalty here. We wish you much happiness in the years to come. From your loving and last Senior Class, 7 Glen Jalan, The 1952 graduating class began way back in 1937 when Chris D'Amanda, Hilde Stem, and Jimmy Laney entered the Nursery School. The next year there was one small addition to the first grade, Janie Lowenthal, who has never seemed to grow since then. We were honored by Andy Goldman's visit, although it began and ended on the same day. Immediately we began to eat up books' under the helpful eye of Mrs. Broadbooks. Patty Gilbert and Wendy Menzie joined us in the 2nd grade and Sue Weil left for 23 school. That year we ma e our debut on Broadway with the smashing hit, Pass n' Boots. Mrs. Mac's stories of Dr. Falstaff filled our imaginative minds in the 3rd grade. All of ns learned to be escape artists with the help of Dr. Falstaff's liquid formula which could melt iron bars. The next year we were joined by Anne Town and nearly drove Mr. Powers crazy. Bonnie Peer came in the 5th grade and we upset all the teachers by pulling down the shades and tipping over the desks and chairs to pla horrorhouse. Mary Arce, Mary Morgan and Peter Warren were the next additions to our class, when Mrs. Cummings, our su ply teacher, taught us setting-up exercises and the song My Aunt Had a Lame, Tame Crane.' Wengy Menzie left ns in the 7th grade and Marilyn and Pat Percy arrived to take her place. Pat and her puppets and art work thrilled us all. Eidrth de was the complicated year as Hilde, Bonnie and Pete Warren left. To fill up the lost space, however, gaarriet Flack, An y Goldman, Barbie Katz, Jimmy McCollum, Vance Nichols, Joan Schlossman and Sue Weil entered. The next year Jimmy McCollum, Pat Percy, Chris D'Amanda and Jimmy Lane leftg Pat and Harriet left with a round-trip ticket which brought them back in our Senior year. Our adrditions for this year were Boo Humphrey, Carla Rolde, Mimi Schwarz, and Sharon Vogel. Neither Mr. Davidson nor Ancient His- tory Class will ever forget Ma's Cow lMoscowl. Our tenth gade was at a loss when Boo, Sharon and Anne Town left. But we benefited when Jack Ault came, soon to become the President of Harley School. The eleventh de was an unforgettable year. Jane Boller, Sally Fuller, John Goldman, Didi Lawler, Dick lllembrandgn Feldman and Janie Ratcliffe joined the rest of us and we succeeded in printing our promised amount of Shrdlus. This was also our 'A Date with Judy year, which everyone agees was a great success. Our hit song for the year was Wedding Bells Are Breaking Up That Old Gang Of Ours, as Didi and Vance took up another kind of homework. At lastwe made the grade and with the addition of Yogi and the return of Harriet and Pat, nineteen of ua became Seniors. Our 'Christmas Dance decorations topped all others as we hope this yearbook does. And now we come to the end of our class history and close the pages of our wonderful years at Harley. We ended the season with a 5-1-1 record, which gave us second place in the CUPS League. Harley placed eight boys on the CUPS League All-Star Team. On the first team were: Jael: Ault, Donn Diclcason, Jud Patterson, and Phil Zimmerman. Placed on the second team were John Stehler, Jack Williams, Ted Keller, and Bruce Ken- nedy. Honored with honorable mention were Doug Stewart, Kermit Steinberg, and Chip Fuller. V TEAM SCORERS OUR RECORD FOR 1951 TEAM SCORING POSITION IN CUPS Harley 4 DeVeaux 2 J . Of these eleven, five have been won and six lost. We stand at 2-4 in the CUPS League as of now. We started off the season with a loss. Industry was our first conquest by the narrow margin of one point. Next we ran up an unfortunate string of four losses before we con- quered DeVeaux for our first Conference game. Defeatin Pebble Hill and Hemlock, our string of wins was extended to three. Allendale, our rivals, defeated us in a close one, 39-35. Our last game to date was a win over Hemlock 46-45. John Stehler, Jack Williams and ,lack Ault lead the scoring with 162, 104, and 102 respectively. The J. V.'s have yet to win their first contest but what they lack in talent they make up in spirit. Sid Moldofsky was the coach of the Junior Hurricanes this year. We played seven schools, winning six and tying one, and we are able to boast of one of the best seasons in many years. Climaxing the season was the annual hockey field day at which time Sue Posson, Linda Pulsifer, Janie Lowenthal and Mary Morgan were chosen to la against the Finger Lakes Hockey Association. This was the first time Harley ha! ever placed four players. All in all we had a ve triumphful season, and we all enjoyed the fun we had to ther and with other sdzools. me basketball season opened with an exciting game against Park which we won 19-17. Next Hemlock visited us, and we administered a decided defeat to them with a score of 44-21. During our next game we were immediately 'olted out of our rosy, pink cloud by a resounding defeat at Nazareth Academ , fosing 32-19. At our next game Batavia paid Harley a visit and we again lost lily an overwhelming score of 50-16. After these last two setbacks we decided it was time to get down to work and our extra ractice reall showed up in the next two ames. Journeying to School for the Deaf we defeated' them by a score of 32-12. lgrom all reports it was quite a game, combining both boys' and girls' rules, making for a more in- teresting and, needless to say, confusing play. On March 15 Nazareth Academy paid us a return visit, and with the determina- tion of the squad and the backing of Pix , we won from a previously undefeated team by a score of 26-17. We should like especially to thank Lois for the wonderful Spb she has done in coaching us, and in helping us to understand how to work toge er.
