Patterned after city, county, and state gov- ernment the 1977 Boys' Girls' State began the summer encampment. This year there were over thirty-two cities that took part. This program instituted to train future govern- mental leaders is based upon learning by doing. The students experience actual prob- lems in self govern- ment. Harlem's partici- pants found the activities at state not only a fine learning ex- perience but also great fun. When the Boys' Girls' State program had come to an end memo- ries still lingered of the government they were a part of and of the sud- den friendships that had ended. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY An annual induction ceremony in May was a form of recognition for the students that had fulfilled the membership requirements of scholarship, leadership, character, and service for the National Honor Society. Members act as ushers at baccalaureate and graduation ceremonies and also choose the speakers for graduation. The graduating members of N.H.S. are easily recognized by the gold cord worn off the left shoulder of their gowns. STUDENT COUNCIL Did you think homecoming was fun? If you had a gripe did you think the right action was taken? Was the Sadie Hawkins Dance a success? These and other activities and problems were an undertaking of the Student Council under the sponsorship of Mr. Jerry Fisher, North Campus and Mr. Bill Conners, South Campus. Trying to be the voice of the students is a rather difficult challenge but it was a challenge that was accepted by the Student Council. The problems that were presented were directly and decisively dealt with. The members of the Student Council worked as an effective link between students and administration for the betterment of Harlem High School. DEBATE Your case is too weak, more research is needed! More volume, I can't hear you! That statement is irrelevant! Mr. Bilyeu delivered these words of constructive criti- cism to Harlem's DEBATE TEAMS. A con- stant stress on getting the right technique helped but the greatest need was practice and research. This year debaters were given the topic Resolved That There Be Compulsory Medical Care For All Citi- zens. , which proved to be a highly com- plex issue. A rather inexperienced Harlem team faced teams with up to 3 years debate experi- ence. FORENSICS To be able to give a speech in a convincing way in front of a group of people seems an almost impossible task. The Harlem Forensic team went from that group to face tough district competition. Kelly Day presented an original comedy selection for a 2nd place and Dave Hodges 3rd in extemporaneous speaking.
