We are distinguished from all other schools for we are Harlem. We proclaim, as students our individualism with dignity and pride. 2 3 . . . reaching for tomorrow today, looking for the truth, searching to find ourselves, to find that one that is us, out of the many. 5 6 He led the way. 10 Under the leadership and guidance of teachers, parents and friends we found what we were searching for. We found ourselves and discovered . . . WE'RE THE ONE . li i HOMECOMING 1977 FANTASTIC” Daze the Knights'' was the cry heard as homecoming weekend began. Thursday afternoon the battling Junior girls were overcome by their powerful Senior opponents in the annual Powder Puff game. The car parade wound its way back to the North Campus, where the exciting Tug-of-War and the Big-Wheel races were held. The eve- ning ended with a bonfire that made the Huskie spirit warmer and brighter. Friday-Game Time and the march of the Huskies began. During Varsity halftime, Brent Herren and Julie Anderson were crowned Homecoming King and Queen. The highlight of Homecoming was the swift annihilation of Auburn with a one sided 34-8 vic- tory. No one could be prouder. ALAS BABYLON The curtain opened on a telegraph office and a message for Randy Bragg, played by Scott Bachman. The message ended mysteriously with the words Alas Babylon . This set the mood for the excitement and suspense which prevailed throughout the play. The audience was kept on the edge of their seats as they waited for the fi- nal confrontation and climax. The play describes the final confrontation that all of us fear . . . Nuclear Warfare. The aftermath of this holo- caust is the challenge that is faced by the sur- vivors in the losses of modern conveniences , the decline of social order and their ultimate deaths. The anxiety, panic and fear were emotions aptly portrayed by the cast including the characters of Lib McGovern, played by Jeanine Huffman; Mark Bragg played by Scott Bachman; his wife Helen played by Lori McConnell; Peyton Bragg played by Donna Bridges; and Ben Bragg played by Barry Nelson. Alas Babylon was well received by the audiences. ORGANIZATIONS High school was never really fun until we became a part of it. If we looked hard enough we could find that orga- nization that was right for each one of us ... Student Council . .. Band .. . Choir . . . Yearbook . . . H-Club . . . Campus Life ... then we became a part of Harlem. STUDENT COUNCIL Did you think homecoming was fun? If you had a gripe did you think the right action was taken? Was the Sadie Hawkins Dance a success? These and other activities and problems were an undertaking of the Student Council under the sponsorship of Mr. Jerry Fisher, North Campus and Mr. Bill Conners, South Campus. Trying to be the voice of the students is a rather difficult challenge but it was a challenge that was accepted by the Student Council. The problems that were presented were directly and decisively dealt with. The members of the Student Council worked as an effective link between students and administration for the betterment of Harlem High School. This year there were over thirty-two cities that took part. This program instituted to train future govern- mental leaders is based upon learning by doing. The students experience actual prob- lems in self govern- ment. Harlem's partici- pants found the activities at state not only a fine learning ex- perience but also great fun. When the Boys' Girls' State program had come to an end memo- ries still lingered of the government they were a part of and of the sud- den friendships that had ended. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY An annual induction ceremony in May was a form of recognition for the students that had fulfilled the membership requirements of scholarship, leadership, character, and service for the National Honor Society. Members act as ushers at baccalaureate and graduation ceremonies and also choose the speakers for graduation. The graduating members of N.H.S. are easily recognized by the gold cord worn off the left shoulder of their gowns. Strey II, Don Baker, Erick Sundbo, Joel Wiemken, Bill Smith, Mike Gnngle DEBATE Your case is too weak, more research is needed! More volume, I can't hear you! That statement is irrelevant! Mr. Bilyeu delivered these words of constructive criti- cism to Harlem's DEBATE TEAMS. A con- stant stress on getting the right technique helped but the greatest need was practice and research. This year debaters were given the topic Resolved That There Be Compulsory Medical Care For All Citi- zens. , which proved to be a highly com- plex issue. A rather inexperienced Harlem team faced teams with up to 3 years debate experi- ence. The season was a competitive and challenging one. 1st Row: Mark Lamendola, Jim Bertrand, Phil Hen- sley. 2nd Row: Usa Duclon, Richard Sundell, Brian Olson. FORENSICS To be able to give a speech in a convincing way in front of a group of people seems an almost impossible task. The Harlem Forensic team went from that group to face tough district competition. Kelly Day presented an original comedy selection for a 2nd place and Dave Hodges 3rd in extemporaneous speaking. Row 1—Donna Bridges, Jamne Huffman, Carolyn O'Neill, Jolyn Jenkins, Brian Olson, Dave Hodges. Row 2-Duawn Pierce, Kelly Day, Lisa Duclon. 28 THESPIANS To be eligible for membership in the National Thespian Society a potential member must have accumulated a certain number of points as a participant in theatrical productions. The points are given not only to the actors but also to backstage crews. For those that believe the play is the thing Thespian membership is an important goal. At times it is a tough task that includes a lot of physical work. Perhaps it is about time we said Thank-you to the student librarians. 31 OFFICE EDUCATION The Office Education Club year began with money making projects that included candy sales and ended with candy sales. At the election of area officers Har- lem ended up with two berths. The area conference was held at Henrici's where plans were made for the state conference. I am sure the OE members cannot forget the Christmas party, bowling parties, the sec- retarial tea or the fun of the spring picnic. Row 1—Carolyn Panther, Lisa Smith, Kathy McGinmty. Each year this organization brings foreign students to Harlem and also sends Harlem students to other countries. The exposure is two-fold. The foreign ex- change student learns about American customs, in a family and school atmosphere, and in turn Harlem stu- dents get a greater understanding of other cultures. The club's year began with fund raising projects that were needed to sponsor club activities. The club spon- sored numerous activities that included meeting with other schools, field trips, and an area dinner. The use of the term foreign student was short lived because of their almost immediate acceptance as friends. Our friends will be leaving soon, but I am sure they will be well remembered. We will miss Gustin Ho, Hong Kong; Lucia Marcucci, Brazil; and Yaniza Bri- ceno of Venezuela. Brazilian exchange student teacher, Lucia Marcucci; and family, Mr. Larry Ralston and Mrs. Hazel Ralston. 34 Venezuelan foreign exchange student, Yaniza Briceno; and family, Mr. and Mrs. Art Schultz children, Mark and Dana. 35 VARSITY CHEERLEADERS We've got it together—baby do we ever. This years cheeleaders keep up the fine standards of Harlem Varsity Cheerleaders. They placed 1st at camp. 77-78 was a year for sports most Harlem fans won't soon forget, and the encouragement and pep of the Varsity Squad will be part of those memories. CHEER LEADERS The Junior Varsity Squad is made up of Juniors and Soph- omores who cheer at J.V. and sophomore games. There were a few trials but they got it together. FRESHMEN CHEER LEADERS The first step in keeping with the tradition of Harlem, was their 1st place honor at summer camp. They worked hard and stayed cheer- ing through the ups and downs of their teams. Not very many fans came to the Freshmen games, but the Fresh- men Cheerleaders kept up the enthusiasm and spirit that aided team effort. They didn't achieve this perfection immediately. It took long hours of practice and many concert tours before they were ready to compete. The Symphonic Band went from high honors at district to the final proof of their ex- traordinary BLUE-RIBBON performance at state. You're out of step! Can't you tell a major from a mi- nor! Together . . . together . . . together . . . Can't you get together? When the year ends you can't forget the Thursday rehearsals, the knot in you stomach during the Christmas Con- cert, and the time you went across the football field out of step. Yet there are those great times when you hit every note just right, or that solo you always wanted to do and the fun of being ap- plauded not once but three times. This year, as always, the Harlem unit provided a Color Guard and drill teams for school and community activities that included representation in parades, drill competition, and presenting the Colors at home games. Today there is little credit or honor given to members of the military. Our American ideals almost seem to be passe. Through the efforts of units of the NJROTC we may still find those individuals who are willing to serve. Row 1 Lt. Denise Holmes, P02 Shari Puckett, Lt. The first major change was in the form of a new and very capable advisor, Mr. Ron McLean, who brought his photographic expertise to the yearbook. A drastic reduction in staff size was another major change. The smaller staff, instead of limiting staff output, was responsible for a greater output. The many changes caused a rather slow beginning, but as staff mem- bers adjusted to the new training they met their deadlines and worked smoothly and effectively as a team. On the frosh-soph level, the runners had a disappointing season record of 3-7 and a confer- ence dual record of 3-5. They finished 5th in confer- ence and in other com- petition, finished 16th out of 18 at the Forest City In- vitational; 2nd out of 9 at Freeport, and at the Sterling Invitational, they finished 15th out of 27 teams. 59 DOUBLES TEAM QUALIFIES FOR STATE The Girl's Tennis Team ended the season with a 6-2 record in dual meets and they finished third in conference competition. As individual competitors, Kathy Hall was placed in the number one position, while Linda Traff was placed second. They had conference records of 6-2 and 7-1 respectively. In doubles competition, the number one team of Hall and Traff placed second in both conference and district. They were also the first Harlem team to ever qualify for state. Jayne Oyen, who was in fifth position on the Harlem singles list, was the Conference Singles Champion. Overall, the team had an excellent season with a very impressive season record and high plac- ings in the conference. front row left to right: Linda Traff, Kathy Hall, Mary Scheidegger, Debbie Picchi, Kathy Scheidegger. second row: Julie Loftis, Diane Broege, Lynda Johnson, Ellen Heidenreich. third row: Jayne Oyen, Coach Paul Rewerts, Sue Bush. 60 front row left to right: Dann Day, Jeff Bender, Tim Sage, Coach Herb Grigg, Steve Mussigman, Todd Schroeder. second row: Mike Wold, Steve Fuller. The Harlem Golf Team had a disap- pointing season this year. After losing the opening conference match to East, they continued at the same pace placing 8th in conference and 13th in district. The Huskies only posted two wins this year, but they had to forfeit them because of eli- gibility reasons. The linksters never came around, finishing last at the Boylan Invitational. The golfers, led by four seniors, a junior, and a soph- omore, were in fifth place the first day at conference, but inconsistent scores led them to placing second to last in conference and last at the At- wood Invitational. In the District Golf Championship, Harlem was left hold- ing the number 14 position. s . - SjUT, 61 front row left to right: Mark Gunderson, Mike Rylatt, Matt Russell, Jeff Mounts, Brian Fleming, Mark Bolin, John Shipman, Craig Verm, Henry Rodriguez, second row: Joel Wiemken, Jeff Palmer, Roscoe Eldrige, Glenn Clinton, Rich Bainter, Randy Thompson, Mike Rogge, Keith Olson, Kevin Knoebber, Greg Markgraf. third row: Mike Butterfield, Mark Cave, John Werst, Don Scheidegger. As they were soon to find out—this was not a Typical Huskie team , these players were prepared to make this sea- son one that the entire area was not likely to forget. After the first three weeks of disappointing play—three losses to Barrington, Jefferson and DeKalb: the Huskies began their uphill climb toward capturing the confer- ence title. This was something that Harlem players had only dreamt of since they joined the Big-Nine in 1963, however this year they made it a reality. Even after their first three losses; the Huskies with the guidance of quarterback Scott Hall and the awesome offensive line, fought back against negative attitudes and unlikely pros- pects, to consecutively win their next six games. Harlem triumphed over once rated West and East, and coasted by unfamiliar St. Charles and Elgin teams. This brought the Huskies in contention for a state title, their next game was against Gurnee-Warren, which they glided by, by a score of 21-14. After winning this quarter-final game, the Huskies traveled to Woodstock where they were placed up against the rugged Blue Streak defense. Although the spirit was there, Harlem's attack could not seem to materialize and they were lead to a disappoint- ing loss. This concluded a satisfying season for the griders, a year that was filled with many accomplishments. This was the first time Harlem had won more than three games in a row-this season the Huskies compiled an almost unstoppable winning streak, defeating seven teams; this was also the first Homecoming won in fourteen years and six players were placed on the All-Conference Team: Randy Bolin, Scott Hall, Dave Kisting, Bill McBride, Al Navickis, and Brian Palmer. All this when added together accounted for the outstanding season the Huskies had. front row left to right: Randy Ryks, Brad Seymour, Corey Butterfield, Marty Schoonover, Jerry Hensel, Andy Christiansen, Grant Owens, sec- ond row: Mark Schulz manager, Roger Ostrom Assistant Coach, Jon Pothour, Jerry Locascio, Bob Ball, Jon Havens, Doug Hike, Phil Mul- cahy, Mike Simmons, Greg Owens manager, third row: Coach Truax, Jeff Smith, Brian Pond, Jeff Pearson, Tony Hamilton, Mike Adcock, Kirk Rasmussen, Mark Verstraete, Coach Ambruoso. fourth row: Tom Rose, Fred Knudson, Jeff Fuller, Brooke Meyers, Scott Briggs, Rick Peterson, Paul Robinson, fifth row: Jay Brown, John Lee, Bruce Middleton, Chris Quinn, Brad Stone, Steve Arey, Don Knight, Tom Tiffany. 64 The expectations that Harlem's sophomore football team had of an unbeatable season, were not to become a reality. After losing the opening game to Barrington with the score of 20-0, the Pups continued a seemingly losing battle as they finished off the season with a 1-8 record. However, this compiled record could not possibly show the amount of deter- mination and effort the Huskies brought forth during every game. They truly put new and clearer meaning to the phrase Huskie Pride ' 65 front row left to right. Freshman Gridders Shine The determined Harlem freshman football team opened the season ripping the Freeport Pretzles 8-6, which put them on the right track standing undefeated after the third straight victory. The freshman gridders went on to carry their winning streak to six, but lost to Boylan in a close game, scoring 0 points; Boylan 6 points. The team did a very fine job, emerging the victors in the last game of the season after defeating the East Erabs 22-14, ending a terrific season 8-1. Overall, the good coaching paid off very well for the freshman players and they put forth great team effort . v -r- 67 GIRL’S DISPLAY ABILITY AND DETERMINATION The Girl's Varsity Volleyball Team carried away a 9-7 record this sea- son, and placed fourth in conference tournament. The girls, led by captain and Most-Valuable-Player Sue Tackelberry, had a few disap- pointing losses which nearly outgained their victories. However, they were quick to prove what ability and an unbeatable spirit can do. Linda Eichelberger was chosen for the Big-Nine All-Conference Vol- leyball Team, and Sue Wentland was placed on the second All-Con- ference Team. 68 front row left to right: Kim Evink, Sue Wentland, Sue Tackeberry, Lisa Evans, Linda Eichelberger, Ylonda Block, Jan Carabelli, Kathy Meyers, Teresa Bowers, second row: Eddie Hannebeth manager, Coach Hendrix. Netters Score Big The J-V Volleyball Team wrapped up the season with a 11- 5 record and placed second in conference. Several new players were added to the team this year with the in- coming freshman, adding to the already talented group of returning players. Many of these girls will move up to make the backbone of the Varsity team next year. Their ex- cellent record this year is proof of their abilities. 70 front row left to right: Mary Lou Kolenda, Kim Clark, Laura Dauenbaugh, Pat Hutchinson, Eileen Rogers, second row left to right: Sue Abels, Cheryl Clark, Dee Dee Stanfa, Coach Niemeyer, Retha Hensel, Shelly Easton. GIRLS CATCH THIRD IN CONFERENCE The girls continually improved throughout the season and compiled a 9-7 record. They placed third in conference with outstanding ef- fort shown by Yolanda Block and Sheryl Clark. Considering that the team only had one senior and three juniors, their season was exceptional. With most of the team members returning, they should be extremely competitive for the next two years. First row from left to right: Jon Novak; coach, Second row from left to right: Sharon Hillenburg, Michelle Blodgett, Sue Tackeberry, Yo- landa Block, Jill Carabelli, Jan Carabelli, Sheryl Clark, Kim Evmk, Pat Hutchison, Kim Kenmngton, and Loretta Patterson. 73 GIRLS POST EXCELLENT SEASON The J-V team accomplished a great deal this season post- ing a 8-6 record. This achievement was obtained by a team composed entirely of freshmen, while their opponents were mainly sophomores with more experience. However, this obstacle did not intimidate the Huskies as they placed sec- ond in conference standing. Outstanding players were Ei- leen Rogers, Theresa Schick and Dawn Carlson. front row left to right: Beth Harmon (manager), Sandi Johnson (manager), second row left to right: Melody Mitchell, Susan Oliver, Tina Kenmngton. Sileena Crawford, Mila Allen, Eileen Rogers, third row left to right: Jan LaMagdelaine, Pam Wilson, Theresa Schick, Dawn Carlson, Lori Roberson, Sue Burke, George Baehr (coach). CAGERS The Harlem Varsity Basketball team had a tri- umphant season this year. The determined cagers posted a win over Jefferson and regained the tie for first place in the conference. Each of the team members devoted many hours of hard practice and unselfish attitudes to reach their goals. Out- standing players were Dave Kisting and Larry Block, while many others came very close. Kisting averaged 18.4 points per game while Block fol- lowed with 16.4 points per game. Kisting also led in rebounds with 196. Two other valuable players were Brent Herren with 81 assists and Tony Floyd with an 81 per cent free throw average. Aggressive coaching coupled with encouragement from reserves brought the team an overall season record of 17-9. ront row left to right: Coach Chuck Schultz, Asst. The cagers came through the season with wins over highly competitive teams such as St. Charles, Elgin Larkin, DeKalb, Bloom and Calumet. The Sophomore Team ended the season with a 17-4 record. Throughout the season, the frosh players were defeated only 8 times. Steve Fuller and Marty O'Brien led the team in scoring and rebounding, while Mike Carlson and Chuck Croft helped the team in assists. Overall the frosh team ended the season with a 12-8 record. 81 DAJKA PLACES AT STATE The grapplers finished another excellent season with a 14-2-1 record, were first in conference with a 6-0 record in dual meets, and placed second in the district. In sectional competition, the Harlem wrestlers placed tenth; at Harvard, fourth; at Boylan, sixth; and they were the Glenbrook North Team Tourney Consolation Champions. Two of the team members: Bob Maddock, a sophomore at 112 pounds; and Dana Dajka, a senior at 132 pounds; qualified for state competition.
