Boys Girls State Each year faculty members se- lect representatives from Harlem to attend Illinois Girls’ and Boys’ state. This venture is sponsored by the Loves Park Police Depart- ment and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit. Illinois State is a mythical state patterned after the slate of Illinois and its govern- ment. Students learn the func- tions of political parties by cam- paigning for office, holding elections, and studying govern- ment in action. Qualifications for nominations to this are: 1. an interest in civics and gov- ernment, 2. leadership, 3. good character. 4. self-reliance, 5. hon- esty, 6. outstanding scholarship, and 7. cooperativeness. Quill Scroll strives to honor and instill the seven basic virtues of journal- ism in all of its members. Truth, the es- sence of good journalism, is most impor- tant, although learning, integrity, judgement, leadership, loyalty, and friendship are all assets to a journalist. To be chosen, students must demon- strate superior work in some phase of journalistic or other creative endeavors.
