I mean, we passed those tough classes, right? It was a year to get involved ... and I did. I found new ways to ex- press myself, and I seemed to get something more out of each school day. rawo 10 II Every lime I think back to Harlem and the years I spent there. I remember trying to find my way. It was like searching for the real me. and finding only a part. 14 15 16 HOMECOMING I can remember back to how the Homecoming festivities began. The ju- nior-senior egg fight was a smash! Everyone that went had a great time. The senior girls won the powder puff football game that Thursday, beating the juniors 27-20. A fantastic effort was shown, especially when they were encouraged with rousing Hello” cheers performed by the powder puff cheerleaders; Tom Porter. Scott Leslie, and Jeff Sage. That evening, the car parade made its yearly trip through Loves Park. The Pep Rally and bonfire were held when the parade reached North Campus. Although Huskie tactics to crunch the Pretzels” backfired Friday night, our Huskie pnde didn’t falter! The crowd cheered on as we heard the presen- tation of the Homecoming Queen Becky Anderson and King Brian Johnson. The 21-0 loss to Freeport didn't muffle the crowd’s cheering power, did it? The junior float was chosen for top honors and the senior float took a close second at the presentation between games Brother Goose Brother Goose, a light-hearted comedy, was the first all school play of the year. As Jeff Adams, a struggling young architect, strove to play “Brother Goose” to his lively sister. Hyacinth, his brother, Wesley, and mischievious Carol, chaos results. Then Peggy Winkel. a traveling boutique lady, came to right things and tear him from the clutches of the young millionairess, Lenore Hudson. The show was entertaining to all who attended. Bopper Week 23 25 Student Council The Student Council holds the Sadie Hawkins Dance, helps with Homecoming, organizes and sponsers the Prom, holds rec-nights, and benefits the student body and the community in many other ways. This year, the group organized a ski trip along with their usual activities. Those who are elected into this organization are truly dedicated to improving our school and its policies. Truth, the es- sence of good journalism, is most impor- tant, although learning, integrity, judgement, leadership, loyalty, and friendship are all assets to a journalist. To be chosen, students must demon- strate superior work in some phase of journalistic or other creative endeavors. Members are encouraged to cherish the ideals of journalism and to appreciate the beauty in things of everyday life, then to apply this appreciation to their own work. Row I: Cyndi Gunderson. Sweden, Belgium, and Columbia attended Harlem this year through AFS. Although they were in a land far from their own with different customs and language, homesickness never seemed to be a prob- lem. Many of them found Loves Park and Harlem to be truly a great place with great people. What more can be said? They greatly enriched our lives through their friendship with us as well as their own. Debate The frustrating research for adequate proof, and the awe- some prospect of going up there on your own to represent the team by presenting a care- fully prepared case, are only two aspects of debating. De- bate is not one of the more recognized competitions; how- ever. the satisfaction found in winning with a well stated, self-prepared case is more than enough reason for the special few who choose to reach for that goal. They spend many hours preparing for concerts, parades, and various other functions. Through practice, experience, hardwork, and dedication, the Concert Band mem- bers can move up one step higher to the Symphonic Band. The members of the Girl’s Concert Choir com- bined their voices to produce a smooth, sweet har- mony which was demonstrated in their concerts. The Huskies started out on the right foot, by stomping Belvidere with a score of 48-0. After losing to Boylan, they lost to an unfa- miliar Green Bay team. Without injured players Greg Gilbaugh, Joe McCort and Vince Crescenzo. the line of Husk- ies was a bit ragged. Against a rough Dekalb team, they only saw a Held goal by Guilford transfer student Charlie Johnson. Other standout performers were Scott Dossev and Scott Hall. Homecoming against Freeport was another Huskie loss. In a grudge match against Boylan. the Huskies dueled them to a 6-6 tie with all their strength back in the lineup. In their next game with Belvidere, the Huskies squeeked through by a score of 3-0, on a fourty-yard field goal by Cnarlie Johnson. After losing again to Freeport, it was time to play Belvidere. and once again they routed the Bucs, capturing a second place conference position. Row I: Chns Samp. Mike Oswald. The first game against Belvidere, with a score 12-2, started a series of losses. In the second game against Boylan, the Pups didn’t come to life until the fourth quarter, which despite a good effort, was still too late to salvage the game and claim a victory. In a non-con- ference game against Dekalb, the Pups got their first win of the season. The final score 16-0. At Homecoming, the Pups just couldn’t get it together. In the first quarter, Mitchell dodged a Freeport blitz and passed to Hamilton who legged it into the end zone. Ending the season, a dominant ground game enabled the Pups to post an 8-6 victory over Belvidere. The team showed obvious progress, but it didn't show by their 3-6 record. The Pups started upward, with a win over Belvidere, but were soon brought down by losses against Boylan and Freeport. Row I: Rick Gibson. Doug Smith. Mark Bolin. Bob Hartwcck. Jeff Mounts. Coach Jack Ramsey related that “The team improved during the season both in offense and defense. The solo victory over Boy- lan showed a tough defensive team that scored a 2-0 on a safety. There were those that were outstanding during most of the season. In offense running back Bruce Middleton shared honors w ith fullback Mike Morrison, Tough linebacker John Havens was the mainstay of the defense. Coach Ram- sev felt that “his boys” continued to expand on the fundementals and knowledge showing a standout squad at the end of the season. FRESHMEN FOOTBALL First Row: Manager Doug Dufoc. The season seemed to be filled with individual effort but tremendously lacking in team effort. They never really got it together as was evidenced by their 4-7 overall season record. Outstanding play was turned in by Lisa Evans, Teresa Bowers, and Sue Wentland but three players were not enough to advance the Varsity Netters beyond district competition. Coach Shultz took a basically inexperienced team, with the exception of Rod Ekberg, and guided it into first place. Al- though that conquest was not an easy one. Harlem had to prove they were capable of taking first place. During the first half of the conference Harlem dominated the other teams. Yet during the second half, the cagers seemed to lack the enthusiasm needed to win. It was becoming difficult to gel up for a game. The Huskies failed to go into the sectionals after being beaten by Boylan in one of Harlem's most exciting games. Harlem ended the season with a 16-7 season record. 81 “Sophs” End Tough Season A 12-8 record isn’t very impressive, but at the start of the sea- son, the Pups luck wasn't going their way. They had a number of heartbreaking losses, many by only a few points. Close to tournament time the Pups started coming alive. Al- though the season was a disappointing one individuals like Jeff Tackberry. Greg Markgraf, Don Hamilton and Don Simmons pulled the team together and won the sophomore tournament. The team was led by standout Donnie West- ern. who in one of the tournament games scored forty points. Other star performers were Tom Honeycutt, Jon Pothour, and Grant Owens, who went all out, but were not noticed. The “B” team also did a good job. with outstanding contributions by Jay Brown, Bruce Middleton, and Randy Barkley. K4 Girl’s Varsity Basketball The girls varsity team had a very disappointing year, ending the season with a 2-8 season record. They were beat out in tne re- gional by Hon- nenegal by the score of 41-28. All in all, it was a year of hope for the girls. They also suc- ceeded in something they never did before ... winning the Harvard and Thomwood Invitationals. The Huskie team didn’t just have a few good wres- tlers. the whole team was good. They had unity. The wrestlers and coaches didn’t set their goals too high, looking no farther than the next meet. They all knew that this year was going to be something special. The team was ranked 3rd in the state, that status gave the wrestlers a lot more motivation and extra pride in their ability. Missing 1st in Sectionals by only 4 points, put a damper on their spirit as only Mike Rush qualified for state. Rush kept going, not only for himself, but also for his team. He knew that there should have been more of his teammates there with him, yet he alone had to prove that Harlem was tough. Rush took a 2nd in state, but his effort and determination was unsurpassed. In the conference meet there were 9 firsts by Jim Pat- pack, Dand Kajka, Don Hecox, Scott Leslie, Bill Turn- mire, Rich Konitski. Ron Hamilton, Joe Fox, and Mike Rush. Also a second by freshman Bob Maddock and a third place finish by Joe Bohn. Even though they didn’t go far this 76-77 wrestling team is not to be forgotten. 88 Sophomore Wrestling The Sophomore wrestlers had an undefeated season. Although not as popular as the varsity wrestlers, the soph- omores did just as well. They managed to capture the conference crown and five individuals won weight class titles. The wrestlers com- pletely dominated the Sophomore tourney by sending 11 out of 12 wrestlers into the finals. The five first places went to Tom Buehre, Roy Dajka, Dale Ekberg, Mike Valenti, and Steve Tague. Seconds went to Tim Jobes, Matt Powell, Jeff Spaulding, and freshmen A1 Konitski and John Lee. They won back-to-back invitational tournaments, and grabbed 4 first place finishes and 2 seconds. John Lee was voted the most valuable tournament competitor after going through three opponents with pins. Scott Bliss broke the school record in the 200 free style and Tom Burt bettered his record. Sophomore records went through a change by the efforts of Brad Dodd, 500 yard freestyle, and Randy Jackson in the 100 butterfly. Harlem’s “arch rival”, Chicago Blum went against a Huskie squad that was ready for the team they had never defeated.
