Yet, in this year of 1976 equal free- dom is a concept that many reject. Patriotic phrases will not advance it, nor will uncertainty and doubt. When we can see others as branches on the same tree, only then shall we be .... FREE AT LAST. 4 We, the people of these United States of America, have in our hands a part of someones destiny. We can extend our hands to help or use them as fists to destroy. We may motivate, inspire, humilate, or praise, be an example to bring hope or through prejudice destroy. There is always a hand that is sought. “As you have done it to the least of these you have done it unto me.” 6 Time after time those that enter our lives become a permanent part of us. We have built a foundation upon their dedication. Their ideal- ism and human values have become our basic values. We can now practice those enalienable rights. 8 Within every American there is a voice to be heard, and it shall be heard because we have the freedom to sing out. Whether we rise or fall, that success or that failure is a small part, that which dominates all else is our right to pursue our dreams. When an American says he loves his country, he means, not only that he loves the New England hills, the prairies and the great mountains. He means he loves the inner light in which freedom lives and which a man can draw the breath of self respect. Adlai Stevenson 12 13 Standing on a mountain top will not help us to survey what is America. We must look into the faces of it’s people. The hope, determination, and the pride seen there, that’s America. 14 EVENTS. . .AN EXPRESSION America, we heard your voice in the silence of the Veterans Day Assembly, in the bedlam of Homecoming, and in the words of Anne Frank. We heard you and we are you through these pages. 16 17 A Nickel’s Worth of Huskie Pride Is Better Than A Buc A firetruck turned onto the schoolgrounds and Homecoming had begun. The pom-pom girls, cheering from the top of the firetruck, led the endless row of cars and the Homecoming theme, “A Nickel’s Worth of Huskie Pride Is Better Than A Buc”, was readable on the fenders. The Homecoming spirit glowed as brightly as the bonfire as one Belvidere Buc found a sad end in the smoky flames. The 6-6 tie with Belvidere did not lessen the spirit of the spectators and the cheer- leaders added a note of comedy with their skit, “Huskie Machine”. The always severely competitive floats were paraded down the track and, following tradition, the Class of ’76 arrived first. At the Semi-formal Homecoming dance, the Court, with Queen Lori Stenzel and King Tim Kane, was presented to the sweet notes of Albatross. 19 Diary of Anne Frank 1942. “Jews must wear a yellow star, Jews are forbidden to drive, Jews must be indoors by eight o’clock, Jews are forbidden to visit theaters, cinemas, and other places of entertainment, Jews may not take part in public sports, Jews may not visit Christians....” At the age of thirteen, Anne Frank, along with her family, was forced into hiding to avoid senseless persecution at the hands of the Nazis. For two long years, they lived in silence, without sunlight or fresh air, exist- ing on their wit, courage and little else. Under the competent direction of junior Lou Ann McKinney, the cast and crew of ANNE FRANK presented a true bicentennial portrait of courage. 21 mmonai Veteran’s Day-197 5 Veteran’s day...... He’s an unmarked grave, some- where in a foreign country. He’s a lighted candle in the window at Christmas. He’s a flag flying at half-mast. Veteran’s day...... It comes in November as a yearly reminder of those who have given their lives in defense of our coun- try. It represents freedom in the minds of all Americans. Veteran’s day...... It’s a symbol of freedom, democ- racy and America. 22 23 The Hobbit Mr. Bilbo Baggins. the hobbit, wasn't at all fond of loud noises, or strange people, or unpleasant places. But when Gandalf, the wizard, asked him to help recover the dwarves’ stolen treasure, the adventurous spirit in his blood began to boil. With the help of Gandalf and his friends, the dwarves, Mr. Baggins conquers ogres, slimy lagoon creatures, giants, and finally slays Smaug, the horrendous fire-breathing dragon, recovering the dwarves’ long-lost gold and freeing the people of Dale. Under the direction of Mr. Dennis Bilyeu, the Harlem drama department presented its first musical production, “The Hobbit”, in a rollicking and lighthearted manner. 24 25 Christmas Concert This year’s Christmas concert was a combination of the traditional sounds of Christmas and the original sounds of today. The A Cappella choir, for the first time, performed “Night of Miracles”, a medley of songs telling the com- plete story of Christmas. The Band, featuring “Russian Christmas”, told of Christmas in other countries. As the band and choirs performed, the little candle of Christmas glowed in everyone’s heart, even though Santa Claus was unable to make it! 26 Bopper Week Mothers lovingly brought out care- fully preserved skirts and sweaters. Fathers laughingly remembered greasy hair, tee-shirts, and Cokes with Betty Lou. People on the streets wondered what was going on. . . .It was Bopper Week at Harlem, a chance for kids to relive another era. Everybody warmed up by bopping to “Rock Around the Clock” at half- time Saturday and continued twisting and hopping through the super dance. Everyone agreed that Bopper Week was “Out-A-Sight!” 28 30 Organizations Leading Our progress as a nation is through its leaders. Leadership begins here. Those people find in themselves the ability to guide others and make an organization more than a name. They are our future. 31 Student Council As the governing body of Harlem High School, the Student Council turned their efforts toward the practical approach this year, investigating the problems of discipline and lack of available supplies for students. Pencil and paper machines were instal- led as a result, but the discipline prob- lem remained unsolved. The Council showed how they related to the needs of the students when they proposed a committee for school adjust- ment of freshman students. First Row: Anna Bartram. Diane Welsh. Girls’ and Boys’ State There’s more to running a country than shaking hands and kissing babies. As repre- sentatives to Boys’ and Girls’ State, six Harlem students had the chance to exper- ience all aspects of local, state and national government in action. These students cam- paigned for office, held elections and learned the internal workings of democracy through first-hand experience. Free time was spent comparing ideas and opinions, or just making friends with fellow represen- tatives. Girls’ and Boys’ State-First Row: Cindy Shields, Scott Estabrooks, Laurie Derrickson. Mutual effort combined with many hours of frus- trating research and study on this year’s com- plex topic, “Be it resolved: That the develop- ment and allocation of scarce natural re- sources should be controlled by an interna- tional organization”, paid off when the de- baters knocked down those teams which had previously held top positions in the district. To be an exchange student, to experience a completely different culture is something that can only be done once in a person's lifetime. It overwhelms the greatest dreams of a person, from the first exciting moments when you meet your new family at the airport, to the sad goodbye's. To sit around the table at home and talk with your new mom and dad, to go out, partying with your newly made friends and be able to talk to them in their own language: This we wish many more boys and girls would be able to do in the future, as we did this year. We simply want to say thanks to all the people who made our stay in America so Terrific. Thanks to all our friends at school, to the teachers who helped us in difficult times, to the good care of mom and dad and the postman, who brought us the family news from home, so far away. We wish them the best of luck in the world and hope to see them in the near future. This confronts the artist with new challenges and the chance to share ideas with a group with his common interest. Cinematography Club There’s a new club at Harlem High School: the Cinematography Club. Under the advisement of Mr. George Baer, the Cinematography Club conceived, staged, directed and produced several feature length films. They also conducted a week- end long seminar in connection with Southern Illinois University and Dr. Harold Lievermenn. Back Row: Tom Stolbcrg, Kevin Baker. Scott Estabrook. Front Row: Marty Drcgcr, Kevin Jensen. Mr. Baer-Sponsor. G. A. A. What exactly is G.A.A.?. . .It’s the Girls’ Athletic Asso- ciation, comprised of many of the girls of Harlem High. The girls do many things, such as sponsoring coat checks at basketball games (and playing cards during the dull moments of half time). They compete in volleyball and basketball games, and also bowl and swim. They attend as many activities as possible to earn points for letters and receive awards in recognition of special accomplishments. G.A.A. lasts all year and is fun all the time. G.A.A. Officers: Linda Bargman. Treasurer; Sheila Reinhold, Vice-President; Linda Thornbloom, President; Linda Granath, Secretary; Chris Mei, Point Secretary. 44 H Club The desire to excel is an inborn characteristic of ev- ery athlete. This excellence is often rewarded with a var- sity letter and membership in the H-Club. These ath- letes, while individually out- standing in their sport, also work together to raise money for their annual steak fry, held in the spring. Ushering at games and an occasional rec-night keep the guys busy and useful. Front row: Pat Lewis, Jeff Anderson. Tim Mackenzie. Gary Anderson. Mike Nelson. Joe Wentland, Matt Austin. Varsity Cheerleaders It’s not easy to smile when your team is getting whipped and it’s not easy to be humble when they’re way out in front. A cheer- leader has to do both, to be able to smile and show spir- it in times of agony as well as joy. And because our Varsity cheerleaders have the biggest smiles, the most spirit, the best mounts and gymnastic ability, they won first place at’ the Missouri cheerleading clinic. Congrat- ulations, girls. We know you worked hard and did your best at all times throughout the year. Bottom row: Jan Snap, Eunice Han- son. Nancy Milhone, Tammy Gruner, DiAnn Ballard. That’s the battle cry of the Harlem JV Cheerleaders! These eight girls proved they really had spirit when they attended the annual Dynamic Cheerlead- ing Association Clin- ic and came away with First place hon- ors. In between games and clinics, the JV girls man- aged to raise enough money for new uni- forms. It wasn’t al- ways easy, but it was always worth it. Freshmen Cheerleaders 1st Row: Arlene Hike. Second Row: Sheila Gentry, Jane Oyen, Marccy Johnson. Third Row: Gaii Milroy, Sherry Haling, Debbie Hall. Fourth Row: Debbie Papini. “We’re Proud of Our Team!” The Freshman Cheer- leaders were formed for the First time since 1972. They really showed their spirit this year while cheering the Freshman teams on in sports. They may not be as widely recognized as the JV or Varsity Cheerleaders, but they sure showed that they can work just as hard, and produce a lot of pep for their team. The girls did a great job and we hope we will have Freshman Cheer- leaders in the years to come. 47 Yell Squad Yell squad is a newly formed organization at Har- lem. This year’s squad performed exceptionally well, including a star-spangled tribute to America’s Bicentennial. Being useful as well as dec- orative, the Pom-Pom girls also cheered the wrestlers on to victory and clocked the swim team. Many long hours of hard practice showed up in the closely synchronized routines these girls performed. Left to Right-3rd: Stephanie Westholdcr, Nancy Schomaker, Carla Cullen. Cyndi Gunderson. That's a typical recipe with the end result being the Symphonic band. Many long hours of hard practicing are needed to produce the fantastic concerts and programs this band performs. Other elements include playing during the half time shows of both football and basket- ball games, marching in parades and selling candy. Is it worth it? Ask any band member and they will surely tell you. . .“You bet!” Row 1 Librarian Kim Bowers, Secretary Tammy Sundbo, Li- brarian Jo Anne Richmond. Row 2-Scott Estabrook, President; Kevin Jensen. Concert Band Where do you go if you are interested in music but you aren’t too sure of the notes? In Harlem High School, the an- swer is the Concert band. This band consists of students from both campuses who are just getting a start in band, or those who are learning to play a new instrument. Under the direction of Mr. Parrot and Mr. Anderson, the Concert bands performed at several concerts throughout the year and gained valuable experience for use in the future. 53 Cadet Band The Cadet Band, directed by Mr. Don Parrot, is the beginning band at Harlem South Campus. The band consists mostly of freshmen and sophomores who are interested in developing their musical skills. This band performs at the annual Christmas concert, which gives them valuable ex- perience for coming events. The members of this organization are always competing for better positions in the band, and eventually, promotion to a higher band. Flag Girls-First Row: Jeannic Bonnell, Leslie Kail. Whipping almost 70 young adults into a single performing unit is a long, tiring and almost thank- less job. It involves much patience, untiring physical stamina and a pretty good set of lungs. Mrs. Sandra Cain has all these qualifications and used them this year to produce one of Harlem's finest choirs. Under Mrs. Cain's direction, the A Cappella choir members produced an outstanding musical presentation, “Fiddler On the Roof', and achieved superior ratings at the State Music Con- test. 56 First Row: Mrs. Cain-Director, Brenda Henniger, Robin Anderson, Kim Bowers, Paula Oliveri, Steve Larson, Pat McGee, Gary Eppcs, Rick Haney, Rick Nelson, Rick Dayhoff, Laurie Derrickson, Barb Fasulo, Dino Pokrant, Karen Hatch, Teri Lindquist, Marilyn Pherigo. Girls’ Concert Choir The girls in the Girls' Con- cert Choir took each of their individual voices and blended them in a smooth continuation of sound. This combination of voices resulted in harmony that earned superior ratings at state contest and impressed audiences at various concerts throughout the year. Under the direction of Mrs. Cain, the girls polished their singing skills to an exceptional per- formance level. Mixed Choir The worst part, I guess, is right before the concert, when your mouth is a little dry and your knees feel a little shaky. But as soon as you open your mouth, you forget about it. All of a sudden you are doing what you love to do, and you know the people listening are hav- ing a great time. When they smile and nod or keep time with their feet, you know you’re relating to them. Of course, we couldn’t do it without Mr. Joern. He’s the one who pulls it all together. It’s the best feeling in the world to express a thought or emotion with a song. In the season opener Harlem ended an East 22 game winning streak with a 10-6 verdict. Midway in the first quarter, Quarterback Doug Jury hit Steve Attebury for a 54 yard gain and a first and goal from the East 6. The Huskies had to settle for a field goal making the score 3-0. A Harlem fumble was pounced on by Scott Dossey, giving the gridders a second chance. With the running of Attebury, Bratcher, and Bartels, they were able to score with Tim Nelson adding the extra point. East came back with 6 but Harlem held for a 10-6 game. A suc- cession of losses to Freeport, Jefferson, and Guilford, ended at Homecoming with a Jury to Bartels touchdown pass and a 6-6 tie. Although losing to Dekalb the Huskies came back with a 7-6 verdict against West a top contender. The Victory was possible because the defensive squad held when they had to, and the offense, led by Bruce Bartels and Tim Nelson, gave Harlem a 7-0 edge. Against the class 5-A second place Boylan, Harlem's defense held but a fumble on the Harlem 10 yard line produced a Boylan score. Later in the fourth quarter Boylan scored again making it 12-0. Harlem came back with a touchdown in the final minute of play, only the third scored against Boylan, but were nudged 12-6. In the final game against Auburn, All Conference Safety Jim Blume intercepted an Auburn pass and ran it to the 4 yard line, 3 plays later Steve Bratcher bulled over for the touchdown. A safety by Jeff McCaulley made the score 9-0. The game was the third win for the Huskies as they ended their season with a 3-5-1 record. Row 1 -Chris Samp, Steve Heaton, John Engebretson. Sophomore Football The Harlem Soph, football team had a rather rugged time of achieving a 5-4 record this year in a roller coaster season. The pups started out on the right track defeating Freeport, they hit a little dip losing to a power- ful Dekalb team 23-7. The next week, they were back up and on the climb. Sophomore standout Scott Hall kicked a Field goal which won in a 3-0 victory. A Home- coming pass to Steve Brown late in the fourth quarter was enough for the Pup’s to nudge Belvidere 13-12. The team then hit a big downfall, being defeated by West, Boylan, and Jefferson. The determination was there but the offense just couldn't pull them out. In the Final the Pup’s proved their true ability in a 30-8 vic- tory over Auburn. Row 1: Scott Patterson, Kyle Grivette, Bob Moline, Dale Christenson. Mike Russell. After a rather frustrating defeat by Freeport, the Frosh's defense did a rather flashy job in shut-outs over Guilford Belvidere. 6-0, and 18-0 respectively. In the next game, they lost to a dominant West team, 22-0. With the running of Steve Wade Brian Fleming, the Freshman beat Boylan 16-14. After a loss to Jefferson, offense rallied the brutal defensive play by Steve Schlensker, Matt Russell Jim Patapack in a rout of Auburn 13-0. The Freshmen ended up with a 4th place 4-3-1 finish, with the pride of a No. I effort. First Row: Jim Patapack, Mark Bohn, Dave AUen, Gregg Statfield, Jeff Zimmerman, Tom Buehre. The runners continued to fight and they showed that champions can come back. They were determined to prove that point, and did so by achieving a 5-4 dual meet record, and also to finish 7th in a 19 team field meet at the Forest City Invitational, and 9th of 26 teams at Sterling. The Harriers didn’t stop there, as they sprinted into third place in the conference, just nine ponts out of sec- ond place Belvidere. With a chance to be the second Harlem Cross-Country team to go to the sectionals. They were barely ousted and finished a strong 6th place. But they did prove that champions can come back! The Huskies had their hands full, but never gave up during their matches, and fought bravely until the last putt. With Guilford winning another state title, the golfers couldn’t complain in that one defeat. The Huskies, though losing players like Gary and Jeff Anderson, will be missing a lot but with players like Burden, Tanrath, and Fosberg coming back, the light must get brighter. They lacked the size needed to compete with the bigger teams. Whatever they lacked in size or talent, they made up for with their pride and determination. Varsity Basketball Under the leadership of senior all-conference guard Scott Andrews and a powerful Huskie squad, the Harlem cagers tied Auburn for sec- ond place and rolled to an 11-5 conference record and a 17-9 overall slate. Add Andrews, and returning lettermen Tim Barkdoll. Bruce Bartels, Jeff Bunger and junior Rod Eckberg, and you have a well-rounded, extremely talented team. After a close defeat to the Class A’s ninth rated Winnebago Indians in the championship of the Turkey Tourna- ment, they were able to grab a second place in a powerful Rockford Classic, usually dominated by Chicago teams. They lost to Auburn in the championship game, 61-54, but avenged the loss later in the week beating them 55-54 in a squeaker. After two critical losses to Jefferson and Guilford, Harlem ended the first half of the season still in contention for first place. A major upset at the hands of West, 64-61, set the Huskies back even further. After strong wins over Freeport, Auburn and West, they took a loss to Jefferson, and a romp by the fast-paced Guilford Vikings 68-52, left the Huskies hopes of a conference crown small. After a loss to Beloit Memorial, they went on to defeat East, and lose to Dixon. In the regional they avenged losses to Jefferson by beating them but lost to Guilford in the championship game. The lack of bench strength and team depth was a major factor in the conference title bid. The Huskies relied heavily on their starters, and showed much power as all five made a place on the Big Nine Conference basketball team. Scott Andrews netted a first team berth while teammate Bruce Bartels made second team. Special mention went to Tim Barkdoll, Jeff Bunger and Rodney Eckberg. Left to right: Chris Samp. The Pups started out the season with an easy victory against Belvidere. The next game was a crushing Harlem loss to a formidable West and then a heartbreaker to Jefferson 63- 62. The pups then posted victories over Free- port and Boylan but defeated by Sophomore Tournament champs. Auburn. It seemed the slump was back with a loss to Guilford in 3 overtimes by 1. The pups ended conference play by defeat- ing Jefferson and taking 1st place. Harlem's only setback in the tournament was to Auburn, in the championship game 59-54. 84 First Row: Bruce Johnson, Jerry Miers, Keith Romine, Brent Herrcn, Randy Bolin, Cal Carlson, Chuck Muckabee, Lawrence Block, Lance Mitchell, Mike Miller, Dave Drake. The statistics didn’t really prove the kind of year that they had. They lost a heartbreaker against Guilford by a score of 47-44, who later won the Guilford-Boylan Freshman Tournament. The Frosh’s lone win was against South Beloit in the semi-finals of the consolation bracket 48-33, after losing that morning to Jefferson. Overall, the freshmen showed a capable team that just couldn’t get it together. Freshmen Basketball Row 1: Kent Jensen, Jeff Tackeberry, Dave Allen, Mark Bolin, Joe Heilman, Mgr. Coach Fletcher was constantly reminding the press that he had underrated the junior dominated squad. The team set many records, including being the first team in the Big Nine to take titles on all three levels, taking 2nd place at the 16 team Harvard Invitational, one of the toughest in the state, compiling the best conference and overall meet record, and taking first in the varsity con- ference and District. The grap- plers also set many individual records, including Down-staler Scott Leslie who had 55 take- downs, and also Tom Porter with 40, (the old record being 39). Rich Konitski who made it down to sectionals had a total of 16 pins, and also compiling a season record of 31-3 and being unbeaten for 22 meets. The grapplers finished the dual meet season with an outstand- ing 15-1 record. They were heavily favored going into the conference meet with 5 top seeded wrestlers. The first night a few upsets took place and dimmed the Huskies hopes but they pulled it through with one first place finish, six seconds, and one third. While hosting their own tournament, the grapplers achieved an unbelievable point total while annihilating the rest of the competition. Then, in the East Tournament, which is the equivalent of the Conference meet, they duplicated their previous feat.
