A Former Harlem Student “The car parade was a lot of fun and the bonfire was really super... I've never seen anything so beautiful. “I thought it was kind of rotten, but at least we had a bonfire this year and that was wild. “I didn't go, but I heard it was a disaster.' 108 109 “It's too bad the team lost, but you could tell they really tried one hundred per cent. “The spirit was there and, win or lose, it is the spirit that counts. 1 was happy with how the crowd reacted to the cheer- leaders. Harlem Students 110 Christmas Concert “Has anybody seen Christmas?” Everyone saw Christmas at the 1974 Harlem High Christmas Concert. From the traditional “Hallelujah Chorus” by Handel to “The Spirit of Christmas” performed by the Harlem bands, Christmas was in the air. Instruments and voices pro- claimed the true joy of the season. A surprise visit from “Frosty the Snowman” and Santa Claus provided delightful entertainment for the children in the audience. Parents were delighted with splendid performances by the Madrigals and Symphonic Band. It was an event worth remembering and was a wonderful way to begin the Christmas season. 113 All-School Play A new year brought a new approach to the fall theatre production at Harlem. Instead of one three-act comedy, director Dennis Bil- yeu presented three one-act dramas. “Sorry, Wrong Number” sent chills of terror running through the audience. Then the audience was held captive by the tenseness of “To Burn a Witch”, a play that questioned man’s ideas of justice. The evening’s clincher was “Waiting For Godot”, a deep contemporary commentary on the absurdity of mankind. All together it was a challenging and exciting experience for the actors, crew, co-directors Dennis Bilyeu and Marjorie Basmagey, and the audience. Pantomimists 114 115 Powder-Puff A quarterback wearing nail-polish? A center with pigtails? What else would you expect on an all-girl football team?! This year’s powder puff game pitted the juniors against the seniors in what was probably the roughest, most spirited, and professional looking game all year. Under the competent guidance of coaches Hombeck and Gibson, the girls practiced passing and receiving, memorized plays, and fought to a well- earned 7-7 tie. Bopper Week “Do you wanna dance?” The jitterbug, the Stroll, the Big Apple, take your pick. Bopper week was a combination of red cheeky-poo kisses, saddle shoes, greasy hair, and sun- glasses. The Fonz was king and curly hair and ponytails bedecked the queens. To top off the week there was a big assembly with all the senior greasers making a rare appear- ance. The grand finale was the Bopper Dance with disc- ockey, Lee Edwards. Everybody was cool!! 117 SPORTS Varsity Football Left to Right, First Row: Mike Latino, Wade Mitchell, Dan Johannsen, Rod Balzer, Curt Blitch, Mike Price, Paul Monnier, Rick Mon talio, Tom Kane, Jeff Heaton. True, a 0-10 season isn’t very impressive, but it’s what comes from inside that counts. Deep down there was a pride and a determination to win, regardless of the odds. Deep down in- side our Huskies were winners. This year’s Huskies were led by senior stand- outs Lefty Jury, A1 Snyder, and Scott Jury. Junior standouts included Doug Jury, Wayde Mitchell, and Dan Bolin. With many return- ing lettermen and a lot of sophomore hope- fuls, next year’s Huskies should, and will, win. 121 Sophomore Football Harlem Pups finished the season with a 3:5 win, loss. They started out with an inspiring victory over Freeport, 20-7, following with an up- setting loss against Guilford, 0-20. With outstanding players such as Jerry Miers, Larry Stewart, and Jeff McCully, the pups roared on with a victory over Auburn 14-0, East High, as a final opponent constituted tough opposition, they were met by a determined Pup squad. The rushing Pups made the yards and held the scoreboard at a tally of 7-0. Pressing for points in the second half, Harlem's final effort ended with 14-13 margin over East with seconds remaining. Harlem's victory then became their most crushing defeat, in what could be called the controversy of the clock. Seconds were gained as the time clock remained motionless. The extra time enabled the Rabeets final victory. A tough season, a tough decision, but a loyal team. Left to Right, Row 1: C. Samp, D. Hanson, B. Tuinmire, S. Ferno, D. Bowers, V. Stewart, S. Freshman Football The freshman football season opened and the question was were they ready? This question was answered quickly as the frosh squad, led by Joe Wiemken, stormed out past a baffled Freeport team. This was not to stop soon, as a determined Huskie team ran to three victories behind a superb defense and some tough running by running backs Wiemken and Steve Brown before getting beat by a mere 8-6 by a very tough West offense. The chips were down, but the Harlem Huskie Freshman team was not as they battered their way to a victory over a strong Boylan team 6-0. This team is a bright spot in football this year and a hope for the future. 125 Varsity Cross Country Led by senior Steve Stubbs and freshman Russ Littlejohn, the Harriers rallied to a 5-6 record. Defeated in their first two meets against bet- ter clubs, the cross country team, raced one that was in far better condition. They came back in a dual meet against East and Free- port by defeating Freeport 21-37. However, they were outlasted by East in the 3 mile sprint. Steve Stubbs finished 2nd in this meet behind conference champ Dan Gilhirst. The inexperience was fading out of the pic- ture as a senior freshman one-two punch of Steve Stubbs and Littlejohn pushed the team to a win over Winnebago 19-41. Then came the first invitational and the Hus- kies were not to disappointed taking a 10th place finish with Stubbs dashing to 9th in the Forest City Invitationi. In the district meet the cross country team was outdistanced by West’s team and had to settle for a 7 th place finish with Steve Stubbs racing to 1 14th place finish. 126 Left to Right: Tom Miller, Steve Stubbs, Sam Fertitta, Randy Ramey, Jim Griesman, Justin Forbes Kevin Ewers. ’ J.V. Frosh-Soph Cross Country With the coaching of Steve Luter and the voluntary work of Larry Swanson, the Fresh-Soph Cross Country Team posted an 8-1 record. In their first big meet which was the Forest City Invitational, the harriers came up with a 3rd place finish out of 18 teams. Placing the harriers was Freshman Russ Littlejohn with a 14th place finish. He was followed by Jeff Clark, Scott Peterson, Rob Schlensker, Rick Rogers who came up with 18,22,25, 27th places. The harriers came home with another trophy from the Sterling Invitational where they took 2nd out of a field of 21. In the confer- ence meet Scott Peterson took a 4th place finish. Although the harriers were half-way satisfied with their 2nd place finish in the conference, they will be shooting for 1st next year. And with dedicated coaches like Steve Luter Larry Swanson there is no doubt that they can do it. Left to Right, Dale Brinker, Jeff Dodd, Kent Parker, Don Smith, Rob Schlensker, Junior Boken. They rounded out their tourney by climbing on and over Hononegah 87-61. The round bailers then went on to victories over West Belvidere and Beloit. A stiff opposition by a strong Auburn offense and Harlem was dealt it’s first loss. The Huskie express then surged past Boylan after a 78-64 loss to East. This brought the Huskies to a 7-2 season record. Then the Huskies dropped their next game in the Boylan classic to Chicago Fenger. The wins over Dixon, Auburn, and Geneva clinched consolation place honors. Besting Guilford brought them to a 11-3 mid season tally. The determined Huskies rolled over 4 out of their next 5 opponents to claim 2nd place only Vl game away from top seeded East. East proved a formidable opponent as they squeaked ahead by 3 during the Final seconds. Boylan was to be their next adversary. They were swept aside by Harlem’s vengeance. Not since the shark confer- ence was Harlem to achieve such a record. Harlem didn’t win the conference championship but through their dedication and sportsman- ship, they were 1. Sophomore Basketball The Soph, cagers came out willing to fight as was evident by their opening games. Rough times followed with a string of nailbiters ending in the loss column. Then the pups came back to whip the Bucs, and Squires. With the help from Jerry Miers, Rod Ek- berg, and Ken Thompson. In Harlems battle against the Bucs, the Bel- videre team kept coming back. Harlems lead became a 36-36 tide score. The Bucs managed to tip the lead 44-43, but Ekberg connected two consecutive jumpers to lead the pups to 56-45 win. The pups went on to finish up in a flury of victories. 130 Left to Right, Row 1: Chris Samp, Jerry Miers, Wayne Collins, Doug Crane, Jeff Sage, Kurt Smith, Brian Cunningham. Freshman Basketball Harlem’s Freshmen ran undefeated through- out the whole season. This brought their sea- son record to 20-0. This by far is the best Frosh season ever recorded. With outstand- ing players like Kisting, Morgan, and Sund- bo, the Freshmen could do no wrong. Un- der fine direction of Coaches Peterson and Couch, the freshmen jumped over their op- ponents one right after the other. These guys were out there showing what they had. What they had was skill and most of all, pride. 132 133 The Varsity Volleyball Team had a very out- standing season. They fought all-the-way toward a state berth in the first state volleyball tourna- ment, before losing the secional title to West. They were beaten on the scoreboard, but not in their minds as they went the distance against West. 134 Varsity Volleyball to Right, Row 1: Donna HiUenberg, Gina Stevens, Dec Ryerson, Sue Tackelberry, Chris Hall, Lmda Bargmen. 'i 'J.lUtfj Girl’s Tennis Using tougher serves, better ball placement and improved strategy , the fifteen girls on this year’s team showed just how far their determination could go. The girls opening match showed their strength against Auburn, with a score of 6-3. In the last match of the season, they defeated East, 9-0. They ended their second season with a 4-4 record, then placed fifth in the October conference meet, a big improvement over last year’s ninth. With the help of the new tennis coach, Carol Johnson, and the new North Campus tennis courts, the team foresees an even better season for next year. Varsity Wrestling Harlem Grapplers, with injuries and weight problems, still managed a fine showing in the light weight divisions. Matmen Floyd Gilligan, A1 Ekberg, Keith Sturdevant and Ron Traver were consistent in their performances. The wrestlers were indeed the shadow of Huskie pride. With Floyd, Al, and Keith returning the Huskies have the nucleus for building a strong contender for the next season. 137 Sophomore Wrestling The sophomore wrestlers continued their domination over all other area schools by running up a overwhelming 23-0 season record and another confer- ence championship. As freshmen, the grapplers finished 8-0 and a confer- ence championship. Both years they out-distanced their competitors by over 10 points. The grapplers set many high goals, but accomplished them and ones that they didn’t plan on, suchasa72-0 dual meet victory over Dakota to open the season-the highest possible score to achieve. The grapplers stuck it to West and Boylan by scores of 61-0 and 54-3, respectively. The team just kept easing by teams until the end of the season when they met the top two team, Jef- ferson and East. Getting by Jefferson easily, they edged by East and were ready for the challenge of the confer- ence. All of the teams were out to get the Pup wrestlers. After it was said and done, the happy wrestlers led by first place finished of Tom Porter, Bill Tur- mire, Rich Konitski, and Brian Johnson, bringing back more hardware. For the first time in Harlem’s wrestling history there was a winner. Row I: Scott Leslie, Tom Porter, Tim Hamilton, Dale Brinker, Steven Heaton, Bill Turnmire, Dan Beech, Rich Konitski. Row 2: Mgr. Row 2: Coach Hirsch, Dana Dajka, Vince Fertita, Brian Palmer, Rich Bohn, Jeff Poston, DuWayne Beach, Bruce Johnson, Don Schicdiggcr, Coach McClure. Freshmen Wrestlers The frosh were at a great disadvantage throughout the season, having all their grapplers in the lower weights. The lack of heavier wrestlers didn’t prove too much of a disadvantage as they still whipped many of their rivals. With an improved schedule the grapplers had some very tough matches and came out on the bottom end because they had to start out many points behind. With some bigger wrestlers the team could easily bring home a trophy next year. 139 Varsity Swimmers Pull Major Upset The Huskie tankers pulled off their greatest achievement to date. The Huskies finally drowned Auburn’s tankers. The final score 87-85, with Mike Owens stroking to a 200 individual medley. Dennis Skatum nipped John Wentland for first place honors. The smiles, the applause, the standing ovations, the knowledge that you have touched someone through your music. After a concert, you realize how important the hours of practicing really are. All of the hard work seems worthwhile, when you hear the thundering applause of a captivated audience. It is hard to describe the joy of being a Madrigal. Madrigals could not exist without a leader, a special someone who molds sixteen different people into one performing group. Someone who is willing to give time, talent, and love. This year’s Madrigals found their special someone in Miss Sandra Doll. With Miss Doll s urging, understanding and guidance, they worked, they shared, they expressed themselves.. .together. 9 Mrs. Anna McLevige Mrs. McLevige has been the librarian at the Learn- ing Center of Harlem High School for the past five years. Her quiet dignity has brought her many friends. Now that she is retiring, Mrs. McLevige admits that she will miss working in the Learning Center, which she considered a privilege and a pleasure. Since Mrs. McLevige has no definite plans for work in the future, she will have more time to de- vote to her favorite hobbies which include garden- ing and traveling. Varsity Baseball 1st row: B. Mollencup, Coach Franzcn The Varsity Baseball Team had a year that in many eyes may have been a flop after being ousted in the first round of the State finals, but it wasn’t. The team proved that through desire and heated competition a name can be born as they took third place. JV Baseball Row 1: C. Samp, R. Sagalia, S. Fcrno. M. Oswald. R. Montalvo. Row 2: D. berg, J. Lamagbclaine, R. tk- The JV Baseball Team, with a line up consisting of many standouts from the Freshmen team and some top Juniors, held down the starting 9 positions on the team. The hitting was superb as the Pup batsmen banged out enough hits, coupled with the no-hitter pitched by Rod Ekberg. The Pups ended with an 11-4 season record. One of the top hitters was Chris Samp who batted over 500 all season. Boy’s Track Row 1: R. Laymen, D. Castro, C. Landwair, A. Patapack, W. Bloyer, K. Swanson. M. Degner, R. Ramey, R. Wade, J. With coaching by Steve Luter, Fred Pelly, Larry Swanson, and Mike Berentes the varsity tracksters finished 3rd in the Big Nine. Junior,Steve Atterbury, had the only Huskie win in the conference meet. He won the pole vault by clearing the high bar at 13 feet. Greg Jury and Jim Chaistain came up with five 2nd place finishes. Harlem’s Junior, Jim Chaistain just couldn’t nail down a first place finish due to the fact that wind conditions were terrible for discus throwing. Graduating Senior Greg Jury soared 19 feet 10 inches with long jump and stretched 41 feet 11 inches in the triple jump. All of these scores combined were not enough to put the thinclads in the 1 spot although it was Harlem’s best Big Nine track finish. Row 1: J. Dodd. R. Konitski, D. Dajka. G. Nania. V. I crtita, R. They had a successful season through the many strenuous efforts of coaches Fred Pelley, Mike Berentes and head coach Steve Luter. It was a total effort and with the help of sophomores Neil Rote, Jim Watkins and freshman Joel Wiemkin, the cindermen ended with a 4-2 record in dual meets and third in die conference meet. Their only losses were to East and Freeport, who downed them by only one point. Brian Oler. Mike Nelson, Tim Macken ic. Coach Wiske, Rich Johnson. Mark Munger, Jeff Olcr. Tennis Their record was outstanding but the end result was not as they anticipated. For the first time in four years the Huskie netters were unable to send a team to state. East had the honor this year, although both teams had posted 12-0 records for the season. Harlem was on the slate at state due to tough competition by Tim MacKenzie and Jeff Oler. JV Tennis: Coach Rewerts, Randy Hargatc, Lance Mitchell, Rick Florence, Tim Barkdoll, Jeff Parker, Kurt Smith, Mike Stallard, Mike Phillips. Freshmen Tennis; Row 1: T. Moore, G. Bailey, J. Sage, T. This cry echoes across fairways, greens and even sandtraps as the Har- lem Golf team practices for their upcoming fall sea- son. Coach Griggs, who has coached the team for two years, says he isn't trying to produce winners, he is trying to produce golfers, which he has succeeded in doing. Coach Griggs also commented that the fresh- men golfers were extreme- ly good. S. Leslie, G. Anderson. J. Anderson. B. Blacker, C. Lee, T. Anderson, T. Riplinger. Girl’s Softball This year's girl’s softball team finished their season with another key note of success. Thanks to heavy slugging by junior Sheila Rienhold.and outstanding pitching by seniors Chris Hall and Sandy Reed, the Huskie girls easily finished the season undefeated. Coach Jereve Miller said of the players, “They are really a pleasure to coach because they always worked as a team.” Row 1: L.. Bargman, D. Hillcnburg. K. F.bert S. Hold- Hall. Row 2: J. Hcid, L. Outstanding runners, helping achieve their record, were sprinters Mary Larson and Anna Bartram, long-jumper Jan Snap, and Mary Jo Mackenzie who was back for her final season. The 440 and 880 relay teams not only did a fantastic job in upping the points, but went down state for their success. Those going down state for the 440 relay team were Mary Jo Mackenzie and Anna Bartram. Runners for the 880 relay were Cindy Zaugg, Eunice Hansen, Jan Snap and Anna Bartram. Sadie Hawkins N.J.R.O.T.C. Three people, all physically handicapped, decide to leave the child-like life of the hos- pital and try to make it in the “real” world. Junie Moon- Facially disfigured by acid poured on her by a mad-man boyfriend; Arthur-handi- capped by a progressive disease of the nervous system that is slowly but steadily killing him; Warren-confined to a wheel- chair for life because of a careless hunting accident. Together they struggle through hardships, merciless public opinion, and, finally, a tragic death. But in the end, they do make it in a very special way. Most important of all, they make it together. The cast and crew of “Tell Me That You Love Me Junie Moon” put on an excellent and touch- ing performance this year. “Hello Dolly” Dolly Levi had always been a “woman who arranges things,” other people’s lives being her specialty. It all started when Horace Vandergelder, the famous Yonkers half-a-millionaire, hired Mrs. Levi as his marriage broker. Dolly introduces him to Irene Molloy and it’s from wedding bells to jail for Vandergelder. Finally, Vandergelder admits “it only takes a moment to be loved a whole life long.’’ In her first year at Harlem, Miss Sandy Doll, along with the Harlem Music Department, presented “Hello Dolly” in the true musical extravaganza style. Quill and Scroll Quill and Scroll inducts those who utilize their special journal- istic abilities to serve the school. Students of this nature must meet many demands and accept responsibilities expected of them. These are the characteristics of Harlem's Meteor and Pepper Staffs. BACCALAUREATE COMMENCEMENT Twelve years suddenly behind you. Where are you headed? There are many place to go from here. You’ve grown, developed, you’ve matured. Like the song says, “—time may change me, but I can’t change time.” This is your time; use it, cherish it. A quick handshake, a wrinkled gown, that diploma clutched in your hand and it’s over. 4 I i s
