Foreword Music, the universal language, is more than iust a pleasant sound. lt defines a mood, conveys a feeling, and relates a message. Music and its lyrics have been especially meaningful in this year of '69-'7O. Al- thoughtitlessometimesseemmisleading,thewordsdeliveramessage.Themusicoftodayexpressesideas of a person's inner thoughts. Today's music artists are striving for understanding and express it through music. Their music exemplifies their longing to understand. Song lyrics have become the way of voicing opin- ions. The age of the Teeny-Bopper has passed. Songs about holding hands and kissing in the moonlight have given way to soul, folk, and hard rock equipped with lyric sheets to better understand the reality of the seventies. Most of today's music is a plea for peace, love, and brotherhood. lt revolves around the problems of to- day's youth and has had a deep effect on young people. Various types of music artists today include folk artists such as Peter, Paul, and Mary, and Judy Collins. Other types are blues singers such as Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, andthe Edwin Hawkins Singers. Some of the most popular psychedelic singers are Jimi Hendrix, Steppenwolf, and Led Zeplin. The society of youth invaded Broadway with the musical production Hair. It expressed most of to- day's music and was acclaimed one of Broadway's best productions. Styles in music change constantly with the times, our music has become a vital means of communication.
