N A VALU TES RLAN During the spring of 1984, the North Central Association, the largest academic accrediting agency in the United States, evaluated the pro- gram and facilities of Harlan High School. This accreditation process if performed once every seven years. Teachers, administrators, stu- dents, support personnel, and members of the community are given an opportunity to examine existing programs and offer suggestions for improvement. This Self-Study, performed the year previous to the visitation, is then validated by the NCA Visitation Team. Their report will offer additional suggestions for improvement. Under the guidance of Mrs. Bettye Stuckey and Mr. Michael Kolos, co-chairmen of the Steering Committee, Harlan came through with flying colors. After welcoming the team at a dinner attended by the district superintendent, administrators, faculty and staff members, the team set to work. Their reports were typed daily by Harlan High School students. The committee was highly appreciative for this ser- vice. They indicated that this was the first school where such service was provided. We appreciate the time and effort of the Visitation Team, which was composed of teachers, administrators, college and university personnel, as well as State Department personnel. We look forward to another visit in seven years! CLOTHI G STUDENTS GDEL After a year of instruction from Mrs. Helen Shaw-Tilgner, Clothing students put on a fash- ion show to model their creations. The show was a big success. The students modeled swimsuits and prom dresses that they had made. Models participating were Patricia Garner, Dutchess James, Jacquelyn Stringer, Freda Smith, Tina Burns, Angela Marshall, Stephanie Henderson and Tonya. 28 2' 5 f , mn, , 4:21. iww if 2, Vi , men. if 'M www N B J M Q M W '-,fa 0 yy., 1. There is a trophy for the winner at each grade level - freshman, sopho- more, junior, and senior. Those four winners then com- pete for the prestigious title of All School Spelling Champion. With spelling prowess as their only weapon, they fight it out at the finals in May during Harlanls English Week festivities. Ms. Pamela Pierce is the spon- sor of the Spelling Bee. Coach Richard said that fresh-sophs will have to hold the team this year. Larry Hoskins is showing much progress, but Coach Richard is making no predictions at prescnt. Cross Country members practice daily. They know they have to be in top physical shape to be ready for each meet. Coach Richards says that the talent is there to maintain a top rate team, but they have to work on self-discipline which is a key to being a winner.
