as , N I ' if k i Qgiqdi -ysvusavessss , .0 f f Aff JOSEPH M. SMITH Principal By now, those of you preparing to leave Harlan High School are probably keenly aware of some of the major differences between elementary school and secondary school. In your elementary school, for the most part, you were taught the basic skills. Teachers tended to lead you by the hand through the processes that we call addition, long division, language arts, and others. When you came to Harlan, it was a whole new ball game. Here you were expected to make choices. You could select certain courses, and plan to get ready for a future career. All of this seemed to have to do with your future life, and training toward being responsible to your parents, your peers, and to yourself. The major emphasis has been on preparing you for the grand entry into the great and good life. What do we mean by the great and good life? Fast cars? Loud sounds? Instant foods? The best of shoes? Is that all there is? Think about it. Is consumption of goods the end result of a proper education? There must be more to the gut substance of living, maturing, and surviving in America or anywhere else. Perhaps we should consider the real essence of one's existence. I am talking about that precious qualitative personal entity - your value system. For what do you stand? Who are your heroines and heroes? For whom would you drown in an effort to save? To whom would you give the last crust of bread? To whom would you give your kidney? For whom would you pick berries? In a controversial situation, would you stand up and be counted. Are you afraid to be different, even if the difference seems correct? Are you comfortable being seen, registered and voting, or do you feel better sulking about hiding in that anonymous never-nothing land that says, I ain't in It?', A life of substance is one that has a sound value system. Make up your mind about what and who you are. Be not afraid. Commitment is quite strengthening. Don't be embarrassed if people know that you love learning and hate violence. Don't be ashamed if your friends know that you cherish another person and that you love to watch the sunrise. Hold your head high and acknowledge your respect for elders. Be as you are. Make yourself better. Stand tall forever.
