Tatman Kathy Slaughter Derwin Brown Pamela Sherman Woodley Johnson V Ernestina Aguayo Sponsor Secretary Parliamentarian President Vice-President Treasurer The main function of the student council is to provide learning experiences for the students. A second function, closely related to the first, is to provide within the school a climate conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and moral development of every member of the student body. The general objectives of the student 'council are as follows: 1. To develop good citizenship, attitudes, and practices 2. To promote good relationships among the students, between students and faculty, and between the school and the community 3. To develop and maintain good school spirit 4. To assist in directing and managing student life activities 5. To provide a training ground for the development of leadership 6. To promote scholarship 7. To uphold school traditions 8. To help each student to find a place in the school 9. To develop high ideals of personal conduct 10. SMITH Principal By now, those of you preparing to leave Harlan High School are probably keenly aware of some of the major differences between elementary school and secondary school. In your elementary school, for the most part, you were taught the basic skills. Teachers tended to lead you by the hand through the processes that we call addition, long division, language arts, and others. When you came to Harlan, it was a whole new ball game. Here you were expected to make choices. You could select certain courses, and plan to get ready for a future career. All of this seemed to have to do with your future life, and training toward being responsible to your parents, your peers, and to yourself. The major emphasis has been on preparing you for the grand entry into the great and good life. What do we mean by the great and good life? Fast cars? Loud sounds? Instant foods? The best of shoes? Is that all there is? Think about it. Is consumption of goods the end result of a proper education? There must be more to the gut substance of living, maturing, and surviving in America or anywhere else. Perhaps we should consider the real essence of one's existence. I am talking about that precious qualitative personal entity - your value system. For what do you stand? Who are your heroines and heroes? For whom would you drown in an effort to save? To whom would you give the last crust of bread? To whom would you give your kidney? For whom would you pick berries? In a controversial situation, would you stand up and be counted. Are you afraid to be different, even if the difference seems correct? Are you comfortable being seen, registered and voting, or do you feel better sulking about hiding in that anonymous never-nothing land that says, I ain't in It?', A life of substance is one that has a sound value system. Make up your mind about what and who you are. Be not afraid. Commitment is quite strengthening. Don't be embarrassed if people know that you love learning and hate violence. Don't be ashamed if your friends know that you cherish another person and that you love to watch the sunrise. Hold your head high and acknowledge your respect for elders. Be as you are. Make yourself better. Stand tall forever. Lawrence Reffells Assistant Principal i 'K Lena Talley Administrative Aide Richard Thompson Assistant Principal Dorothy Richie Administrative Assistant . . What do you see? Your awaited future In the form of a tree. The limbs shall reach As your mind sets the race The stump is persistence If you can keep your pace. The bark is protection Which is something you'll need The leaves are accomplishments But you have to succeed. If the tree your future? Do the Parts tell the tale? Or is that the form of beauty We all admire so well? Mary E. Reynolds Division 402 Seniors p We have reached the moment in our lives We have come too far to turn around No matter how hard it seems or sounds After high school our feet must be on solid ground Set your mind on being something, on being number 1 What ever you do in life try to be the best Always strive to be above all the rest Senior class of 1984 Good luck in your future endeavors and remember that Education is the key to success! Stephanie Farmby Division 402 We were teased when we were freshmen And joked and poked at too. We were greeted by flying pennies Most of them brand new But we didn't let this stop us, We were determined to fight while it last And we graciously picked up those pennies And pocketed them with class! Now life was looking brighter As sophomores we were sure That we had it all together , Because we were more mature Although the teachers got tougher And the courses were harder, too, We didn't give up. We hung in there, Endured, held fast And handled the year with class! Kool, calm, and collected, That's what we thought we were No more time for underclassmen There were mischievous acts to be done. We threw pennies at the freshies, Sold them elevator tickets, too We had to let them know we were juniors That's what we had to do. We may have acted foolish, Or even kind of rash But whatever we got ourselves into We had fun and we did it with class! Well, we couldnit goof off as seniors We had to face the awesome truth We were growing up, getting older We were leaving our youth So we stayed up nights and studied For an A instead of a C on exams We arrived at our classes on time Way before those doors were slammed. Although this year wasn't easy And was harder than the rest It was the class of '84 and to US it was the best! We are always mov- ing ahead, striving for the better. We search and explore, seeking until we find. As we look, we meet and experience new people, new things. The people are strangers to usg we know nothing about them - who they are or where they are coming from. BUT we acquaint ourselves with their values and morals, and we learn to UNDERSTAND and ACCEPT them. On this day, all students and their parents come to Harlan and prepare for another suc- cessful year in school. Registration fees are paid, pro- grams for the year are picked upg and, during a pro- gram sponsored by the Student Council, parents are given the rules and regulations of the school, and are told what we expect of their children. In order for this day to be a success, workers are needed. Thus, faculty, staff, and upperclassmen give up one or two days of their summer vacation to come in and help new students and old so that the opening days of the new school year will run smoothly. 'x 1 61 MOCK WEDDING The Adult Living and Parenting class of Harlan is one of the many classes offered by the Home Economics Department to juniors and seniors? The mock wedding is done so that these young adults can be- come familiar with the rules, regulations, and protocol involved in a formal wed- ding, and so that students will know the parts played by people at or in a formal wedding. Each person or group - bride, groom, ring bearer, parents, bridesmaids, best man, matron of honor, flower girl, minister, and friends - has a specific role to play. During the first fifteen minutes, Ms. Chiles and other faculty members explained the process for applying for financial aid. At the end of that session, juniors, seniors and their parents went to various classrooms where representatives for different colleges, universities, and the armed services spoke on admission requirements. by ,ss Wfw ' g.vv 4 W1- mu... ff W, J VM , f 6 27 is 7 , I I 4'- GD fd X rx! if I' Q L1 4 ,4,f Uiwumi 'ELL Q55 'Swap Wham M4 .gr . 0 1 ii! gf QQ ,gi 1 J- var- A N. 8 in M H. We thank all who give for this worthy cause. A special thanks to our 44 first-time donors. This means that we are reaching out to new people and enlarging the pool of available donors to help meet patient needs throughout the Chicagoland area. This group, along with its moderator, Ms. M. Tatman, discuss problems that arise at Harlan, and seek to bring about a solution. The participants come to the sessions during their third period study. The group has worked to improve the school envi- ronment by attempting to get broken lockers fixed, keeping the lunchroom clean, and finding ways to help Harlan Students express the school spirit. The group has visited Operation PUSH's Saturday sessions and found them in- spiring. We are proud of these students, because they are willing to take a stand for academic pro- gress, and for renewed school spirit.
