Commanding Officer Commander Marvin E. Butcher Jr., USN Commander Marvin F. Butcher, Jr., a resident of Key West, Florida, was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve on 1 Mar 1974 and upon graduating from the University of Kentucky was called to active duty and commissioned an Ensign in September 1975. Following attendance at the Surface Warfare Officers School Command Basic Course, his initial assignment was USS Moinester (FF-1079) where he served as gunnery assistant, antisubmarine warfare officer, and navigator. He subsequently attended the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School where he received the degree of Master of Science. From December-1980 to July 1981, he attended the Surface Warfare Officers School Command Department Head Course. Afterwards, USS HARLAN COUNTY he was assigned as engineering officer aboard both USS Richard L. Page (FFG-5) and USS Newport (LST-1179). Additional sea tours have included: commanding officer USS Aquila (PHM- 4) and chief staff officer of PHM Squadron Two. Commander Butcher ' s last duty assignment was as Professor of Strategy at the US Naval War College. He is a graduate from the College of Naval Warfare and the College of Naval Command and Staff at the US Naval War College, where he received the degree of Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic studies. Additionally, he has received the degree of Master of Arts from Salve Regina College. Commander Butcher is a proven sub specialist in naval mechanical engineering. Commander Butcher has three children, Marvin E. Ill, Jock Liam and Tiffany Lynn.

1 Executive Officer LCDR A. A. Thomas, USN LCDR Thomas was born in Baltinnore, MD. He Attended Fork Union Military Academy and was brigade subcommander during his senior year of high school. He was commissioned from the United States Naval Academy in 1981 and attended Surface warfare Division Officer school in San Diego CA. LCDR Thomas has been assigned to four ships prior to HARLAN COUNTY. He was Missile Gunnery and Ordnance Officer and Main Propul- sion Division Officer aboard USS TARAWA LHA-1, Navigator aboard USS HAYLER DD-997, Chief Engineer aboard USS PENSACOLA LSD-38 and Damage Control Assistant Aboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT CVN-71. LCDR Thomas is Engineering Officer of the Watch qualified on LSD-36 and LHA-1 class ships. He has achieved Tactical Action Officer qualifica- tion on DD-963, LSD-38 and CVN-68 class ships. USS HARLAN COUNTY LCDR Thomas has completed six operational deployments. Two to the Western Pacific lndion Ocean, one to the Indian Ocean Persian Gulf, one to South America and two Mediterranean Indian Ocean deployments. He was a participant in the U.S. Naval Operations off the coast of Lebanon in 1983, Naval Operations in support of the Korean Airlines 007 disaster, UNITAS XXV, Haitian relief operations in Guantanamo Bay Cuba, Operation Deny Flight in Bosnia, Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. LCDR Thomas has received the Navy Commen- dation Medal with three stars and the Navy Achievement Medal in the performance of his duties. LCDR Thomas resides in Fredericksburg VA with his wife the former Robin Antoinette Butler. They have two children, Albert Jr. and Courtney Elizabeth-Anne,
