Tisdale s First Lieutenant First Lieutenant p 5Ian. 1987-14 Iul. 1988 A When you look at the following pages, you will see the hardest working group of men on the ship. Whether un- derway or inport, the men of Deck Department were out getting the job done. The operational schedule of Marine Amphibious Readiness Group QMARC-l 1-88 included 12 Am- phibious Exercises, seven vehicular offloads and onloads, five Underway and Vertical Replenishments, and countless hours underway steaming, ln every evolution, the men of Deck Department took charge and got the job done quickly and safely. HARLAN COUNTY provided the first wave of each assault with her 15 Amphibious Assault Vehicles tAAV'sl. Following the precise Assault Timeline, the underway launch team car- ries out the launch at exact intervals to lead the assault. After the initial waves, Marine Corps and Seabee jeeps, trucks and bulldozers are needed on the beach. Deck Department car- ries out the offload, in which over 50 vehicles are transferred ashore, some over the bowramp onto a Causeway bargefferry some over the sterngate onto a causeway or large Utility Landing Craft The Boatswain s Mates and Deck Sea men landed the LCU s guided the causeways in directed all vehicle movement and ensured safety throughout the com plicated evolution The Gunner s Mates also had a major role in several ev olutions ln addition to gunshoots drills and small arms train 14 lul. 1988-Present i i . I g . . i . r , ing, HARLAN COUNTY had the opportunity to provide live? NavalGunfire Support during an operation in Capo Teuladaj Sardinia, italy. Under the maintenance and operation of Thirdg, Division, our 3 f5O.caliber guns worked perfectly. 8 Other special evolutions included five Underway and Ver- tical Replenishsments. Deck Department took charge of allg rigging and handlingsduring the unreps, including ship-to-ship? communications and transfer.-VVe were also in charge of alla H 5 Aviation facilities duringithe Vertreps and numerous Helo: Y 4 Operations, handling all cargo from Engine Heads to cookiesi C from home. Duringisomesof our port calls where we had 'wi anchor out, Deck provided safe and timely boating services afig all hours for equipmentand personnel transfer, official visitsn and liberty parties. A A - s i g . Deck Departmentwas also responsible for keeping the ship ii looking smart during our highly. visible, diplomatic port visitst This included painting and .preservation of the ship's sideS, Q arterdecks and main deck areas if it didn't move Weir painted it Thanks to the great technical expertise of BM1 ChromY and Thornton Deck Department was able to meet H eed all of our assigned missions From the sterngate tO or from the booms to the bowramp Deck was doing' right the first time every time u , , 1 Q. 1 I . . The professionalism shown in the long and often difficult operations at sea and the outstanding display of good behavior and goodwill ashore were an example for other ships and men to follow. It was a demanding operational schedule we met, with many days spent isolated with no word from our loved ones at home. We saw much ofthe world, while our own worlds turned without us. But no matter how we choose to look back on MARC 1-88, HARLAN COUNTY's seventh Mediterranean deployment, we can always remember that when it was our turn, we did it right on the SUPER GATOR! el. Special thanks go to ENS Decellas fFrench Navyl, Mrs. Charles Erde, EN3 and Mrs. Skidmore, and SN Day for their help, without which this cruisebook would not have been possible. Also special thanks to the many crewmembers, too numerous to mention, who gave up their own photographs so that the entire crew could enjoy them in this cruisebook.
