Pleasant memories have been painted by the staff, as art- ists, using you, the students, as subjects. Your varied activities have provided us with a palette of colors and have enabled us to depict scenes which in future years should recall many happy hours. Aren't they swell? Every phase of our high school life will bring memories we shall never forget. Remember Paris Night Club Prom, Our Miss Brooks, class day, baccalaureate and commencement? The Seniors chose carnation as their class flower, navy and white as their colors, and Character is the true diploma as their motto. One of the big events of the year is Homecoming. The Seniors worked very hard on their float, for they realized that work and friends would soon be a thing of the past. Then at last came the big moment-the restless line of Seniors, the well-remembered Pomp and Circumstancef' and the handing out of di- plomas. As they walked down the aisle for the last time, the class of '54 re- called four happy years in Harlan High. Ram the Ramblers Qi KE wk any me - e 21 S. Dressed in mid- dies and bloomers, the Girls' Trio repre- sented the f1appers of the twenties with By the Sea. With only the light from his fire, Raymon Pedersen told the story of the The Crema- tion of Sam McGee. The Four Jokers, clad in Dixieland costumes, presented a panto- mime to Dry Bones. Many songs were rec- ollected by the company band and piano-roll music by Kathryn Sorenson. Thirty-two students participated in the second annual all-school production of The Gay Ninety Revue. ' i The Curious Savage, a comedy on the surface with a moral beneath, was presented by the junior class to a near-capacity house. The play Was directed by Mrs. Myrna Mur- ken, with Pat Goeser as student director. Setting for the play is the Cloisters, a pri- vate home for the insaneg but the inmates are very gentle and harmless. The action centers around Mrs. Savage, Who has been sent to the home by her cov- etous stepchildren, in an attempt to receive her Wealth by declaring her insane. Following a mad whirl of events, Mrs. Sav- age humiliates her stepchildren into realiz- ing their selfishness, and she is free to leave the home. She hesitates to leave her friends who seem so happy and contented, but real- izes theirs is only an egg shell world, and not for her or any other sane person. Those who received I ratings advanced to sub-district which was held in Harlan. Jack Rossmann and Hugh Allen received I's in the Interpretative Reading division. A top rating was given to Lowell Henriksen with his original oration on juvenile delin- quency. As there was no competition in the Extemporaneous Speaking section, Hugh Allen and Gary Poe were automatically ad- vanced to the sub-district contest. A drama, The Lamb in the Window, was chosen as the one-act play to be entered in the speech contest this year. It was the story of a small town minister who resigned because his greedy congregation made him feel he had failed at his job. The Cyclones' season was very successful, considering the opponents which the team met. The schedule the Cyclones played was the toughest in Southw-est Iowa. The teams that downed Harlan were all champions of their own conference. In one sense of the word, you might say, we were second place in the conference-Jef- ferson, Sac City, and Carroll were tied for first, Harlan and Ida Grove were tied for sec- ond while Denison was in the cellar. We started the season with Red Oak, the Hawkeye Eight champs. They beat us 27-0, which was our worst defeat of the season. ffswwz up, We Still not adapted to our single-wing offense, we suffered another defeat by the Audubon Wheelers 26-7 . The next week, we traveled to Carroll and played a much improved 'ball game, but came out on the bottom 25-7 . In the next game, Harlan was considered an underdog by four touchdowns. The team surprised everyone by giving the Sac City Indians a hard fought ball game. This was a moral victory although losing 20-13. The team would just as soon forget the Jeffer- son game. Schraeder and Company ran the Cyclones ragged all night. This was a down- fall from the Week beforeg We lost 26-0. Underdogs wouldn't justify what we were rated as now, but this didn't bother the team in the 6-6 tie with Ida Grove. This baffled the experts, not saying what it did to the FIRST ROW: K. Jacobs, J. The week of joy finally came to the Cyclones as they defeated Logan 26-6. The following week, we played our tradi- tional rival, Atlantic. Each player did his best in the hardest fought ball game of the year. We let down for two plays in the fourth quarterg this gave the Trojans time to score the winning touchdown. The score ended 12-6. November 6, the last game of the season, we traveled to Denison and won an overwhelming victory 26-7, although trail- ing at half time 6-7. The season ended with a 2-6-1 record.
