'Q 9 I-I A R IJ O O N Senior Class Will I, the Class of 1929, having come to my last hours, and being in full 'possession of my faculties, feel it my duty to say a few words to my heirs concerning' the long years which we have passed together, more or less happily. , I have seen some lives that rolled on with such perfect peaceful! ness and quiet, no startling upheavals, no change of any kind, that it seemed wearisome just to behold them. Yet I believe that a life full of 'tups and downs is the most. enjoyable because a varied existence is attractive to every human being. I am arranging my worldly effects and consigning to my lawful and natural heirs 'all my worldly goods, to each one the peculiar property s-eeming best fitted to his or her needs. I further want it to be distinctly understood that if anyone of the beneficiaries of this will shall attempt to dispute or in any way change the items in it, he, or she, will be immediately cut off wholly and entirely from any and all of its provisions. I, the class as ai whole, do will and bequeath the following items: To the Freshmen, to be disposed of as they see fit, I give and be queath all the tears shed in the exams, and all the wrong answers set down in moments of weakness. I 'llo the Sophomores, who are soon to become Juniors, I bequeath and devise all my stupidity and facility for blundering at the simplest tasks, also all the beautiful ease with which I set aside and banished forever the difficult ones. To the Juniors, I give my dignity and modesty, both of which they are sadly in need and which I will never need again. I give and bequeath to our Superintendent, Mr. Stith, a twig of forget-me-nots, so that when any positions are vacant, the Class of '29 may be remembered. That night I dreamed an awful dreamg It turned me eoldl with fright. I thought that Satan grabbed at meg I 1'an with all my might. But all in vain, He took me up High, high into the airy When lI looked down I found that I Could see most everywhere. But all the world was muchly changed: Your teachers old' and gray, Are sitting by their firesidesf' I heard grim Satan say. You're seeing thirty years aheadg Look quick, 'twill all go soon Because you've served me fairly well, I'm granting you this boon. I looked to see whom I could findg A salesman I espiedg A wealthy, happy family man. That,s Knappy there, I cried. I glanced at Broadway in New York And chief among the sights The actress Agnes Benning's name Stretched out in blazing lights And Charles Kees sadly sitting there In pipe-dreams spent the dayg Still dreaming of the Gwendolyn fair Who's long been gone away. Jean Curtis in another school, An English teacher great, Was dfawillg wages -much too large For one of her estate. Page Thirty Marion Brindley making cheap cigars Had grown so very slim, But had a nice fat pocketbook And nothing worried him. And Harry Book, a graduate Of some Northwestern college Was taking care of Frances H. And thus she used her knowledge Jane Hansen and Ellen Davis Had homes right close together They lived with their husbands Russ and Hal With hearts as light as feathers. Leo had been captured By Eilene McKeown fair, Alma had taken Melvin- Though we thought she wouldr1't dare. While Marvin K. at the cold North Pole, A wireless was sending To warn each corner of the world What weather was impending. I saw Leonard at the other end At work week after week. He greased the south Pole so the world Would turn without a squeak. And Virginia W. was in New York, A dancer of much fame, With wealthy bachelors hovering near, Like moths about a flame, And Linn rode in a Cadillac, A skillful chauffeur heg While Frances Quick with her better half. Was happy as could be. Then looking a-s closely as ever I could. I espied Margaret, Gladys and Thel- ma P. That three old maids from my class there'd be I never did think I would see. '29 HARPOON Donzetta Crouch I next beheld- She had grown old and grayg Out -in the yard with her grandchildren She watched them at their play. 'Then I heard a musical sound- It seemed as one I'd knowng I looked and there sat Rfaymond Playing on the old trombone. Elmer's hopes were realized, For a Pharmacist was heg And with his helper Charles Mayne Was happy as could be Then into 1ny vision there crept A circus billboard tall With two Lefeber sisters The biggest act of all. Darrell, Alice, and Vera I saw Selling eggs at a very high rate: For farmer's wives I-Iarl been their fate. Robert owned a dairy farm Full fifty cows it held, Robert kept the cows from harm And Edna with him dwelt. Myrtle B. went to the westg She bought herself a ranch. She led a very happy life Until the avalanche. Anna R. I also sawg She lived near by a lake She spent her days in perfect bliss With her contented mate. Ralph Rettig wars an engineer And through the long, dark nights 'He steered and looked and watched ahead And made the train run right. And Haze1's mind was somewhat off She studied much too hard And with her dolly in her arms, She played out in the yard. And Virginia N. taught Domestic Science, A truly wondrous cook, And Dorothy G., an author great. Worked on her latest book. Katherine M. a matron Was, OE a boarding school elite Florence, a widow, taught in school To help make both ends meet. Then Emery C. next I saw, I-Ie'd made a million dollars By selling ponies two bits each To weary brain-racked scholars. Gerald Lewis, a lawyer great, Had gained world-wide renowng I-Ialvor Carlsen, mayor of New York Was cleaning up the town. And Elva Blair was a leader Of a Methodist church choir And farmer 'Petersen with his pile Was ready to retire, Elsie 'Erickson was editor Of Harper's magazine Dale M. was making wondrous cars Which ran on kerosene. And Robert Wilson had grown rich By making overalls. While Paul Peters, a minister Was making pastorate calls. Marian P. was a singer great She sang for kings and queens. Alice May was writing verse For Mother's magazines, Custer was painting pictures grand All of the Georgia fair, But looking closer I discerned That Gaer was also there, Mildred taught in a country school Away out in the westg It wasn't permanent, she saidg She did it for a rest. Page Thirty One For I saw her in a garden 429 IIARPOON Cortland Gaer who'd gathered tame for speed Retired a millionaire. He'd gathered dough by selling seed, His wife was Madeline Mayer. Looking around whom should I see Yes, indeed, 'twas Margaret Bristol Telling fortunes to many people By a large and shiny crystal. Thelma Watkins was a second Mary Pickford, And Elva Curtis a world known nurseg While Anna as a helper Poured coins into the purse. Cecile Henricksen I discovered Riding in a Chevroletg For her husband was a dealer And received the best of pay. Agnes Knudson- But her name was that no moreg Dolliver was a wealthy banker Lois was his private stenog For Lois was a flapper lady And wanted money for swell togs. Thelma McKeever in Mo. Valley I saw For she had won the much-wanted boy. Thu-s was this young lady's heart Evermore brimful of joy. Now Roma -Schwab and Ellen Stahl Were D. S. teachers great, And earned a very meager living By baking pie and cake. There were a. few I had not seen These were t'he missionaries threeg Yes, Twyla, Dagmar, and Geraldine, I saw. Out to a Chinese tea. Just then I heard an awful noise, I cried, It's going to rain! But when -I looked, the fiend was gone, And .I was home again.
