CUMMERCIAL DEPARTME T Our Commercial Department seeks to accom- modate an ever-increasing demand for business training. Efficient instructors have been engaged and arlcquate equipment provided, This depart- ment is a business community-securing definite and lasting results in young men-training them in keen thinking and strict business methods. H000 UHULAR HIP t'LAssi1f1CA1'1oN 01-' CADETS. New cadets are classified on the basis of work previously com- pleted as shown on official transcripts from the school last attended. The privilege of changing a cadet's classification, however, is reserved until he has shown himself capable of pursuing the assigned course in a satisfactory manner. Stand- ardized Scholastic Aptitude Tests and Reading Tests are used as a basis of reclassification. lx'IETHOD or INSTRUCTION. Each class period at Hargrave Military Academy is made a chal- lenging adventure in learning by instructors who are men of thorough training and wide experi- ence in their profession. The principle of thor- oughness is ever kept in mind and no sacrifice of this is made in an attempt to accomplish a pre- scribed amount of work. The sixty-minute class period allows sufficient time for recitation on the part of the cadet, explanation and clarification of difficulties on the part of the instructor and for supervised study at the end of each period. Helpful explanations of assignments for the next day are made and the work to be completed dur- ing the evening Study Hall is outlined. Small classes allow each cadet ample oppor- tunity to obtain individual help. Instructors are always glad to assist cadets during vacant periods, or in the evening Study Hall. Each cadet is expected to have four recitation periods per day, and no cadet can have more than tive. In addition to the regular classes each cadet is required to take a class in Spelling and in Mili- tary Science and Tactics. REPORTS AND EXAMINATIONS. Frequent writ- ten and oral tests are given to enable the instruc- tors to judge the progress of each member of the class. The results of these tests are averaged with grades on daily work. The monthly grades thus obtained are mailed to the parent or guardian. Examinations are given at the end of each term, and the grades made on these are averaged with the monthly grades to obtain the yearly average. In addition, standardized subject-mat- ter tests are administered at intervals as an objective measure of the progress of the student. For Seniors wishing to enter colleges or universi- ties requiring College Entrance Board Examina- tions, arrangements have been made for these examinations to be given in Chatham on the dates specified by the Board. The following grading system has been adopted: A, 95-100g B, 88-941 C, 81-87, D, 75- 80, E, 65-74 CConditionalj, F, O-64 CFailurej. Although our passing grade is D,. an average of C is required for a college certificate. Each cadet at the end of the year receives a certificate of promotion specifying the courses in which he has earned a passing grade. TRANscRrPTs. Each student is entitled to one official transcript of his work, provided all ac- counts with the school are satisfactorily arranged. Those requiring additional transcripts should enclose a dollar for this service. The Academic Department is glad to assist the cadets in selecting a suitable college or university, and in planning a course of study designed to meet entrance requirements of the selected school.
