The telebinocular with the Keystone Visual Survey Test is used in the Reading Clinic for the purpose of screening-out students with visual dif- ficulties. In those cases where difficulty is indicated, treatment or examination by an eye specialist is advised. Before the cadet comes to school each year, however, we suggest that the parents have his vision checked by his own physician. REMEIIIAL READ! G Reading disability is recognized as a major cause of failure by secondary school students. To meet this situation and to provide assistance to Hargrave students, the Academy has organ- ized and equipped a department of Remedial Reading. Students desiring or chosen for this training are tested carefully for the purpose of discovering the weaknesses and causes of dis- ability. In cases of extreme difficulty individual in- struction is recommended. Each pupil needing remedial training is placed in a group having corresponding reading abilities. This group re- ceives visual training to develop speed and ac- curacy, and exercise in such skills as reading for detail or for precise directions, vocabulary build- ing, and word recognition. In the majority of cases rapid progress and improvement are ac- complished. The student who removes his reading disability opens the way to a freer and more enjoyable high school career. The tachistoscope, a tlash device, is used for developing visual skills in slow readers. lixercise in reading numbers, words, phrases, ami even sentences timed from 1X5 second to lf10O sec- ond gradually increases speed and accuracy in recognition of printed material. Pupils in Reme- dial Reading classes receive this training to- gether with other types of drills and exercises necessary in the development of reading skills.
