FUREWHRD The purpose of this catalog is to introduce you to Hargrave Military Academy, to show you by word and picture what the school is doing for boys under its care. Hargrave Military Academy is a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Second- ary Schools, which is the highest standardizing agency for approved Southern schools. Our graduates are admitted to colleges and universi- ties on certificate without examinations and on the same basis as graduates from other prepara- tory schools of the first rank. The history of Hargrave Military Academy, a Baptist preparatory school, verifies its slogan Making Men-Not Money. Through the united efforts of Rev. T. Ryland Sanford, then pastor of the Chatham Baptist Church, and his loyal and consecrated friend, J. Hunt Hargrave, Chatham Training School was organized in 1909. In 1925 the name was changed to Hargrave Military Academy. Col. Camden, President of Hargrave Military Academy, and Mr. J. Hurt Whitehead, President of the Board of Trustees, confer on school policies. PHILU UPHY The secondary school in America exists to aid and to promote in its students the development of those powers, skills, attitudes, and ideals which will enable them to become progressively useful as citizens in the school community, to the end that they may become useful and honorable citi- zens in a democratic, social, and political order. Its program must, therefore, be so organized and administered as to assist and encourage the indi- vidual pupil to acquire, to the extent of his native endowments, knowledge and experiences that will assure, so far as may be, a personal responsibility for the realization of a well-rounded life in his relationship to society. In scope, the program should embrace the mental, moral, physical, social, cultural, and spiritual phases of man's existence. Hargrave Military Academy, founded by a group of consecrated Christian leaders, and de- veloped under the ownership and general control of the Baptist Board of Missions and Education. believes that it is obligated not only to provide for the mental, moral, and physical development of its matriculates, but also to give the spiritual and religious aspects of life a definite place in its program. A proper attitude toward and relation- ship with the Supreme Being, developed in a non-sectarian atmosphere, with tolerance and good will toward all, are esential to the building of Christian character and leadership. The motto, Making Men-Not Money, with all that it implies, sums up the philosophy of the school. The student body of Hargrave Military Academy, which is composed of boys from many social environments, home conditions, and edu- cational backgrounds, may be divided into two main groups: CID those who enroll for the spe- citic purpose of preparing for higher education, and 425 those who have failed to fit into the educational program of their home communities. This school provides a program suited to the needs of these distinct groups.
