'QD 'PIIE CIILUHW GUAIHI FUREWHRD The purpose of this catalog is to introduce you to Hargrave Military Academy, to show you by word and picture what the school is doing for boys under its care. Hargrave Military Academy is a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Second- ary Schools, which is the highest standardizing agency for approved Southern schools. Our graduates are admitted to colleges and universi- ties on certificate without examinations and on the same basis as graduates from other prepara- tory schools of the first rank. The history of Hargrave Military Academy, a Baptist preparatory school, verifies its slogan Making Men-Not Money. Through the united efforts of Rev. T. Ryland Sanford, then pastor of the Chatham Baptist Church, and his loyal and consecrated friend, J. Hunt Hargrave, Chatham Training School was organized in 1909. In 1925 the name was changed to Hargrave Military Academy. Col. Camden, President of Hargrave Military Academy, and Mr. J. Hurt Whitehead, President of the Board of Trustees, confer on school policies. PHILU UPHY The secondary school in America exists to aid and to promote in its students the development of those powers, skills, attitudes, and ideals which will enable them to become progressively useful as citizens in the school community, to the end that they may become useful and honorable citi- zens in a democratic, social, and political order. Its program must, therefore, be so organized and administered as to assist and encourage the indi- vidual pupil to acquire, to the extent of his native endowments, knowledge and experiences that will assure, so far as may be, a personal responsibility for the realization of a well-rounded life in his relationship to society. In scope, the program should embrace the mental, moral, physical, social, cultural, and spiritual phases of man's existence. Hargrave Military Academy, founded by a group of consecrated Christian leaders, and de- veloped under the ownership and general control of the Baptist Board of Missions and Education. believes that it is obligated not only to provide for the mental, moral, and physical development of its matriculates, but also to give the spiritual and religious aspects of life a definite place in its program. A proper attitude toward and relation- ship with the Supreme Being, developed in a non-sectarian atmosphere, with tolerance and good will toward all, are esential to the building of Christian character and leadership. The motto, Making Men-Not Money, with all that it implies, sums up the philosophy of the school. The student body of Hargrave Military Academy, which is composed of boys from many social environments, home conditions, and edu- cational backgrounds, may be divided into two main groups: CID those who enroll for the spe- citic purpose of preparing for higher education, and 425 those who have failed to fit into the educational program of their home communities. This school provides a program suited to the needs of these distinct groups. h - LL-55, 4 X i x5.QH M , W fi'flf ff'Q. 5 F , Avid A ' gg5gMfggQq23iQ,e2gM' f.'.QY3fff H31 4, 1 Q9 f-- 1 :ay,w,,,fnig.? sqm: Q! Glllllil C lbe most effective guidance program is found in the school where the student and his development are factors considered to be as im- portant as the subject matter in the curriculum. At Hargrave the Guidance Program is used to discover the needs, interests, aptitudes. abilities and capacities of each cadet. On these bases we build our program of instruction. liach cadet is assigned a faculty advisor, who keeps in close contact with him regarding his personal, social, moral, and academic develop- ment. Scholastic Aptitude and Standardized Achievement tests are administered to entering cadets to assist in their proper classification. Personality and vocational preference tests, given at intervals, help the cadet's counselor in advis- ing him regarding his personal adjustments and vocational choices. Periodically, tilms dealing with vocational. educational, and social relationships are shown to the cadet corps. Each year the school con- ducts a survey of vocational interests among the cadets. The results are considered in planning for outside speakers, forum discussions, and spe- cial vocational films. Monthly reports on these adjustment prob- lems are made to the academic dean by the faculty advisors. Additional time is made avail- able to students for personal, specialized counsel- ing. One of the outstanding features of the program is College Night. :Xt this time in- formation and interviews are made available by the representatives of many colleges and universities. The spiritual life of the cadets is fostered in a special way by an annual Religious Empha- sis week. At this time stress is placed on the great spiritual and moral values. During the week an outstanding religious leader visits the campus and lives with the cadets. Fonferences are held by him to assist the student with his problems. In those cases where difficulty is indicated, treatment or examination by an eye specialist is advised. Before the cadet comes to school each year, however, we suggest that the parents have his vision checked by his own physician. REMEIIIAL READ! G Reading disability is recognized as a major cause of failure by secondary school students. To meet this situation and to provide assistance to Hargrave students, the Academy has organ- ized and equipped a department of Remedial Reading. Students desiring or chosen for this training are tested carefully for the purpose of discovering the weaknesses and causes of dis- ability. In cases of extreme difficulty individual in- struction is recommended. Each pupil needing remedial training is placed in a group having corresponding reading abilities. This group re- ceives visual training to develop speed and ac- curacy, and exercise in such skills as reading for detail or for precise directions, vocabulary build- ing, and word recognition. In the majority of cases rapid progress and improvement are ac- complished. The student who removes his reading disability opens the way to a freer and more enjoyable high school career. The tachistoscope, a tlash device, is used for developing visual skills in slow readers. lixercise in reading numbers, words, phrases, ami even sentences timed from 1X5 second to lf10O sec- ond gradually increases speed and accuracy in recognition of printed material. Pupils in Reme- dial Reading classes receive this training to- gether with other types of drills and exercises necessary in the development of reading skills. IIIETETIC Our dietitians provide the cadets with a good wholesome diet. School tables are furnished with an abundance of best grade, well-cooked food. The faculty, their families, and students are served at the same tables and with the same food. This, in addition to assuring the patrons that their sons are properly fed, helps to develop that intimate relationship between faculty and stu- dents which has ever been the policy of the man- agement of Hargrave Military Academy. Dir-titimz The first tloor of the new building provides a commodious dining room which seats 450 people. This provides for cadet corps, faculty, visiting teams, and antly and wholesome kitchen is equipment guests. The dining room is pleas- attractively designed to assure at and healthy environment. Gradu- ates who merit college recom- mendations are admitted to col- leges and universities on certificate. A cadet desiring to enter a par- ticular college or university should plan his course of study to meet the specitied entrance requirements of that institution. In order to assure proper classi- iication of a new cadet, an ofticial transcript of his record from the last school attended is required. This transcript should accompany the application or follow as soon as possible. A cadet who enters for his Senior year's work or as a post- graduate and meets other require- ments will be granted a diploma upon the completion of four major units, one of which must be fourth year English. The privilege of changing a cadet's classification, however, is reserved until he has shown himself capable of pursuing the assigned course in a satisfactory manner. Stand- ardized Scholastic Aptitude Tests and Reading Tests are used as a basis of reclassification. lx'IETHOD or INSTRUCTION. Each class period at Hargrave Military Academy is made a chal- lenging adventure in learning by instructors who are men of thorough training and wide experi- ence in their profession. The principle of thor- oughness is ever kept in mind and no sacrifice of this is made in an attempt to accomplish a pre- scribed amount of work. The sixty-minute class period allows sufficient time for recitation on the part of the cadet, explanation and clarification of difficulties on the part of the instructor and for supervised study at the end of each period. Helpful explanations of assignments for the next day are made and the work to be completed dur- ing the evening Study Hall is outlined. Small classes allow each cadet ample oppor- tunity to obtain individual help. Instructors are always glad to assist cadets during vacant periods, or in the evening Study Hall. Each cadet is expected to have four recitation periods per day, and no cadet can have more than tive. In addition to the regular classes each cadet is required to take a class in Spelling and in Mili- tary Science and Tactics. REPORTS AND EXAMINATIONS. Frequent writ- ten and oral tests are given to enable the instruc- tors to judge the progress of each member of the class. The results of these tests are averaged with grades on daily work. The monthly grades thus obtained are mailed to the parent or guardian. Examinations are given at the end of each term, and the grades made on these are averaged with the monthly grades to obtain the yearly average. In addition, standardized subject-mat- ter tests are administered at intervals as an objective measure of the progress of the student. For Seniors wishing to enter colleges or universi- ties requiring College Entrance Board Examina- tions, arrangements have been made for these examinations to be given in Chatham on the dates specified by the Board. The following grading system has been adopted: A, 95-100g B, 88-941 C, 81-87, D, 75- 80, E, 65-74 CConditionalj, F, O-64 CFailurej. Although our passing grade is D,. an average of C is required for a college certificate. Each cadet at the end of the year receives a certificate of promotion specifying the courses in which he has earned a passing grade. TRANscRrPTs. Each student is entitled to one official transcript of his work, provided all ac- counts with the school are satisfactorily arranged. Those requiring additional transcripts should enclose a dollar for this service. The Academic Department is glad to assist the cadets in selecting a suitable college or university, and in planning a course of study designed to meet entrance requirements of the selected school. MILI'l'tIItl' IIIlI'Alt'I'ME 'I' lXTROlJl'l I'lON During the period of World War I in order to co-operate in every possible way with the Government, and upon the request of many loyal supporters and patrons of Hargrave Military -Xcademy, the authorities introduced Military Training. The Academy operates under Section 55c, National Defense Act, which provides the Academy requisition of all necessary military equipment, firearms, and ammunition needed for successful operation. Since our national laws require that every male citizen above the age of eighteen years of age must serve in the army or navy in time of war, this training is regarded as imperative. It simply means that should he be called for military service at any time during his life, he will be better prepared than the average high school student. The cadet, moreover, derives benefits from this training which are of incalculable value to him in later life. Pl'RI'0Sl'10F MILITARY DEP.-XRTMEN'l' The aim of Hargrave Military Academy has always been to provide a homelike school for those boys who are intrusted to its care for in- struction. In our organization military training does not supercede the homelike influence. Har- lmnf-: ,r , 3... -c 4 grave Military Academy seeks to combine these two desirable features. The military training imparted here is of the highest order and includes advanced and modern methods. The splendid record of the Hargrave Military Academy Cadet Corps is a matter of deep pride to all loyal supporters of the school. We strive at all times for perfection in the exe- cution of all military duties, but our main en- deavors in applying our system of military training to growing boys is to develop in them, at their most impressionable age, habits of punc- tuality, obedience, orderliness, respect for con- stituted authority, reverence for our National institutions, a sense of personal responsibility and self-reliance, and to build up strong, graceful bodies, alert minds, an erect carriage, and manly bearing. This is accomplished without in any way in- terfering with the parental, homelike relations of the student body and the school authorities. A member of the faculty lives in each dormitory, and is always available for consultation and guidance. It must be emphasized that there is nothing in this military training which seeks to build up a militaristic spirit in the cadet. ..f- .Q lllill All 'I'wo days in the week students will be al- lowed to spend a part of the recreation period downtown. Students are under the authority of the school from the beginning to the close of the session. Prompt observance of the order of the day will be strictly observed. Students will not be allowed to engage in any games during school or study hours. No student will be allowed to contract debts at the stores or elsewhere without written consent of parent or guardian, and with the approval of the President. Any student permanently leaving the school, without written consent of parents or guardian, will be given an honorable dismissal. Hazing in any form is positively forbidden. No firearms or fireworks will be allowed in or about the building at any time. Students are forbidden to bring their automo- biles to the school for pleasure usage. No canned heat or cooking devices are to be used in dormitories. Students are required to care for their own rooms, keeping them in good order at all times. Rooms must be put in order for dafly inspec- tion. All students are required to keep themselves neatly dressed and to conduct themselves in a gentlemanly manner at all times. During all recesses and holidays the general REG Lil'l'l0 rules of the school will remain in force, except upon announcement of the President. No tacks or paste shall be used on the walls for the purpose of making picture galleries. The reading or possession of improper litera- ture is forbidden. Hitch-hiking is forbidden with penalty. Disrespect to a Faculty Officer or insolence in any form is positively forbidden. Penalty-dis- missal or otherwise severe punishment, depend- ing upon circumstances. Any cadet found guilty of drinking intoxi- cants, or of having such in his quarters or posses- sion will be severely punished, frequently by dis- missal. Gambling, betting, or possession of devices used for same, is strictly forbidden. Offenders will be punished. It is against the school rules for a cadet to join any oath-bound or secret organization. Profane and obscene language at any time or place is forbidden with penalty. Cheating on recitations or examinations, lying to an Officer, or other conduct unbecoming a gentleman will be severely punished. Before matriculating, each student will be required to subscribe to the above rules of govern- ment, pledging his honor to cheerful obedience. The rules and regulations will be posted in each room, and in corridors. . . .4 -.pg MF' 1 -5, E, as . i,-,fm 3 ew :S f 1 . . , gmmuIwr1',3,,,.-4. - W . at - L ' . x ,,,,.,Mnws f ' 'Nw AMS , .,.,...,....W N ,.-,,,..-v- - 'MMM' ! f Uommissioned Utficer COMMISSIONED OFFICERS--Frou! row, left to righl: Capt. Ashley. llllllllll lllll'Ali'I'Mll 'I' The modern American home frequently requires the service of either a boarding school or a school with a specialized program of training for 12- to 14-year-old boys. junior school students at I-Iargrave are given every advantage of this program at the age when boys are most responsive to habit and character training. Their needs are being met by limiting the size of classes to an average of twelve to fifteen pupils, by providing continuous supervision of all activities, and by insuring close Contact with faculty and staff members of excellent Christian character who supervise the complete training of these cadets. Evidence that this program has met with success is, in part, borne out by the fact that during the past session many former junior school boys were enrolled in the senior school. The Hargrave junior school building is new and modern in every respect. It provides living quarters for fifty elementary school cadets tonly two boys in a roomj, two masters, the house- mother, and other faculty and staff members, and contains classrooms for the sixth through the eighth grades, reception rooms, and social and recreational facilities for this department. Each dormitory room is furnished with chairs, tables, single beds, clothes, closets, and a lavatory. J UNIOR SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION HEAoMAs'rER-The headmaster is responsible for the disciplinary training of these younger boys. We strive for strict military discipline ad- ministered in the spirit of kindness and under- standing. The approach to the problems of each cadet is through friendly counseling by a man who lives with these younger boys. 'l'1:Ac1-11-:Rs-'l'hroughout the history of this department the school has used special care in the selection of teachers who are prepared for hoarding school grade work. These teachers supervise the night study of junior school boys and conduct afternoon school for those deficient in their studies. HOUSEMOTHER-Parents need not suffer any uneasiness in sending their young sons to us. In addition to the competent Masters, who direct these boys, there is a kind-hearted and sympa- thetic Housemother. Her duty is to make life pleasant and home-like for them. She also cares for their clothing and mending, and is in a defi- nite way a mother to the boys. JUNIOR SCHOOL TEXT BOOKS SIXTH GRADE ENGLISH-Essentials of Everyday English, by Ferris and Keener.
