Y ORACLE 1929 ,Q nj FoREWoR1o Kind Reader: You now hold a book in your hands, something which is to be looked through, studied and probably criticized, but to some, who will hold this ORACLE, it means more than merely a book. These pages hold something dear to the boys whom you will find within. These' pages hold our records upon them. They carry our minds back to the good times and the hard times we have had at our dear old school, and to others they remind of something more-the 'gtake'-off , into the great unknown, Life, which means that we must never cease to struggle, but to constantly carry on in honor of Hargrave. Therefore, we cherish every page. W e have tried hard to make a success of this book and we believe that we have done well. W e know that there must be a number of mistakes evident but, kind reader, we trust that you will overlook these and hold in mind that we have done our best. In the' future, we hope to be more! perfect. Now, as ywou go further into this book, we will say jiareiwiell, and to the future Editors, we' wish you all success in your publications. -THE EDITOR. 4 ss T . 1V13.-A-g. as e 1 if R LE ' 1 DEDIICATION IIN DEEP APPRECIATION OF THE KINDNESS AND LOVE SHOVVN THE OADETS OF THIS INSTITUTION WE THE ORACLE STAIJP OF NINETEEN HUNDRED AND TWENFX NINE AFEEOTIONATELY AIND DE VOTEDLY DEDIOATE THIS THE FIFTEENTH VOL EDVVARD ALI EN FLOYD AN INSFRUOTOR AS PVI DENOF O11 OUR LOVE 11MA . '4Smoky is one of our Dutchmen with the exception that he is a very quiet fellow. He came to Hargrave in the Spring of '27 and has been here since, he seems to care a lot for dear ol' Hargrave, for he remained over the past Summer and finished a lot of work. L4Smoky,' has made quite a lot of friends since he came to Hargrave and he is liked by all of us. He doesn't like the athletic field so much, but he is a smart guy in class. He leaves us with the intention of becoming a great business-man, and if he continues with the same spirit he has shown here at Har- grave, we are sure that he will reach his goal. JASON THOMAS COLLIE CCReLi79 RINCCOLD, VIRGINIA Private, Company MBU, Private, Company HA , Sergeant, Company MAH, Member: Jef- fersonian Literary Society, S. O. S. Club, Var- sity Club, Varsity Football, Baseball, Track, and Basketball, Vice-President Jeffersonian Literary Society, Secretary Athletic Council. '6Red', is another of the Pittsylvania boys who was out looking for his famed long-eared mule one day in the Fall of '25, when, by chance, he ran upon Hargrave and took a likin, to the place to such an extent that he has been with us since. We never did find out just where the mule was found, but uRed,' hasnit bothered about it in the least, so we think that perhaps the old plug was heart- broken and passed away to unknown lands. HPted', is a very likable fellow among the cadets and the Faculty, and he has also shown up well on the athletic field. As you leave us, uRed,,' we extend our best wishes for your success in this big world. s ,,,,-s.w,,,,,,,.,..-.-.4-...m,..,,,..,, t L , ,,.,,,,,,,.....f.. H. Ladies and Gentlemen, you now behold none other than uChip, the smiling lad from the Capital, a fellow who has been with' us for the past four years and who has helped to keep the morale up in the cadet corps of this school. NChip expects to study medicine when he leaves us and we are sure that he will make -2. success of this vocation. As you leave us, Chlpf' we wish you the best of luck. s STEWART COOK CCChref7, RICHMOND, VIRGINIA Private, Company HB , Member: Jefferson- ian Literary Society, Tidewater Club, Basket- ball Squad. This noble lad came to us in the fall of 328 and was enthusiastic to become a Key- det. He did not sleep for several nights, won- dering when his uniform would get here, so he could strut it to town with the rest of the boys. 'LChef,' is very popular among the students and faculty, and in the class room he takes the lead in all of his work. He also belongs to our famous debating team., We are sorry that this is a'Chef's only year with us, but still we feel sure that- he will make a great success in whatever he under- takes, and the sooner he starts the better it will be. Bill,, isn't so fond of athletics, but he does his part on the bleachers, helping the team as much as he can. He isn't a genius in classes, but he is sure of his work. We entered the year with it as our slogan and it has served us faithfully through the trials and tribulations of the school year and we fully believe that if each of us lives up to his part it will help us to form friendships which will better enable us to Ncarry on in that vast area ahead of us, called-LIFE. , At the beginning of the year when it came time to choose a president to- guide the destinies of the class, all eyes turned to Lieutenant H. W. Stephens of Charleston, W. Va., and thus far he has shown us that we made no mistake. Assisting HSteve are two other fine fellows. The first, 4'Pop Atkinson from High Point, N. C. Besides being o-ur vice-president, he is a whale of a tackle on. the football team, while our secretary, '4Jake,' McL.ean, a Hopewell, Virginia. product, is one of the finest back fielders to grace an H. M. A. gridiron in recent years. Another pair of gridiron stars are the '4Alex- andria Twinsf, Bode and Armstrong, both of whom tip the scales at over 200 pounds. The whole class was saddened after the holidays to learn that '4Runt Dale of Goldsboro, N. C., and 4'Blue Law Bunts, claiming Pulaski as his home, had decided not to return. Both were fine fellows and will be greatly missed. We have another trio of footballers in Rufiie Charnock, our smashing fullback from the Eastern Shores, Homer Essex, a crack guard from Richmond, and '5Whoozie Manley, another linesman who hailed from the state of Washington. Two North Carolinians and roommates are Spencer Harris from Raleigh and uPathe,' Smathers from HThe Land of the Skyf' Hank Dalton is ano-ther one from the aOld North State, and his chum, F.. J. Davis is a real sheik from Martinsville, Virginia, while E. J.'s cousin, uMutt Goode, has the girls of Henry at his feet. Frank Goode, '4Mutt's,' cousin, is another one of our popular '4RATS, but he is undecided as to where he is fro-m. The Whitehead brothers, Camden and Carey, and the Hodnetts, James and Fred, together with Leslie Whitehead, a cousin of the former pair, brings the number of Chathamites in the class to five. Shelton, a Grundy youth, appeared at Hargrave with hay-seed in his hair, he is now our class marksman. From Keysville comes 'gRace-Horse Hailey, who won his long deserved shoulder bars this year. Two Kaydets who shouldn't be popular but are, are Jack Willis, our bugler, and his assistant, '4Late Houseman. Both come from Richmond. George HSilent', Daughtry comes to us from Norfolk, but don't hold it against him. Another fine fellow is 4'Johnny', Burke, whose home is in Manassas. Two members hailing from the national capital are Donald Hu1'd, who tries very hard to be a wit,7' but has only half succeeded, and Belt, who has already lost his heart at Chatham Hall. We are blessed with two more from the North, they are Birch and Cohn, both from Mount Vernon, N. Y., also 6'Sugar Turk, who left his heart in Baltimore, and his roommate, uFireman Allyne of New Jersey, who is well acquainted with the '6Danvillites. We are glad to introduce the two inseparables, 6'Jerry,, Strain from Lexington, and uPuddin- head Westerman, from Clifton Forge. These two are always up to something, but they always come out right: side up. Another from Clifton Forge is Roy Burks, and 4'Squint,' Tolley, from Lexington. Both are popular '4Rats. We have three Roanoke lads with us. uGoofie Guy is a regular bean pole, while 4'Fitz Warren is just the opposite. Roy L'Monty Montgomery, the third of the Roanoke lads, has lost his heart here in Chatham some place and we don't know just where. Last, we have HBill Rush, from the 'cSmoky City,', and then we have 4'Pluto Arritt, from Fredericksburg, Va. u And now kind readers, after looking over our roster, I, the historian, feel sure that you will Join me in calling this class and its members, 4'The Cream of the Cropf, 58 gg A if ll. They have hitched their wagon to a star and are driving full speed ahead. We feel sure that this has been a real year for the Sophomores. First, please let us glance at our class officers and you will see some good reasons for the Sophomores' successful year. t ' Hugh Vaughn, our president, hails from Baltimore. He is a demon on the gridiron, but a lamb at Chatham Hall. aBowser has shown that he is true blue in every respect since the day he set his foot on H ' argrave soil. Frank Hubbard our vice president co f , - , mes rom Buffalo, N. Y. He proved his worth in basketb ll d ' A ' ' ' . . a an made his letter. Hadley is a great painter and swimmer, while his brother is -well l'k d b h H 7' 44 ' ' 1 e y t e rats as well as the old fellows. Feeniel' Vaughn is from the good ol' city of Richmond, Va. He- has a good chance next year to make the football and baseball teams. Verne Ramsey and Walter Coles are true Chathamites, both sport big cars and consequently are popular with the fair sex. Burchette, from Wirtz, Va., and c'Pea- n,ut'7 Hackney, from Danville, Va., are our two 'promising young ministerial students. Ward Essex formally lived at the home of the Ford, but now lives in Richmond, Va. He is the idol of a certain girl at Chatham Hall. Scottie Lockwood hails from Havana, Cuba. He is the boy that visits A. C. in Danville right often. c'Slim Carner comes from Spotsylvania, Va., and is one of those Fredericksburgsheiks. Walter Jones came to us from Nathdale, Va., and is an ardent reader of the Tarzan books. HPuss lVlcGhee is from Durham, N. C., and played on the Sophomore basketball team which won the league championship. uBeef Richardson, the cow- boy from Callands, Va., showsf that he is a real indoor track man at times.. . 'ulessiel' Townsend is the school inventor 'who comes from the state of Michigan. O'Brien reached here from Cumberland, lVld., and is unusually fond of reading Detective Stories. I Wagner, promising young minister, is the sole Sophomore on the rifle team this year. . n , Little can be said about Historian little NCook, .but friends., you can readily see that the Sophomore Class enjoyed a big year during the session 1928 and 29. 61 r fl fi' ,Q . And now let us take a look at the, men who, through their untiring efforts, enabled us to clinch the Prep. School Championship of the State. With the return of Captain Halligan, Lynn, Baughn and Collie from last C 1 . . . year, oach Towill found himself only with the problem of unearthing a standing guard. This hole was soon plugged by Essex, a Rat, and Spruce, a last year's substitute, while two snappy little forwards, Hubbard and McLain, filled the utility roles. P Some of the high lights of the season included our two crushing defeats of our ancient rival, D. M. l., by the scores of 35 to 141 and 26 to 16. Our two victories over Blackstone Military Academy. The 30 to 21 defeat handed to Randolph-Macon Academy, and the never-to-be-forgotten 34 to 33 over Virginia Episcopal School, one of th ' ' ' ' e strongest teams 1n the state. This victory practically clinching for us the champions-hip. A As this goes to press, the team is on its way to Lexington to compete in the Southern Tournament d k ' ' an we now that, regardless of how they finish, they will be in there fighting every minute for Old Orange and Black and if an team d , , y owns them they will know they have been in a real scrap. Next came basketball, with four veterans back. Coach really made other coaches throughout the state k H , wor . e put on the floor a team which really could follow his principles. Last season Hargrave had one of the best teams that ha s ever represented the school, but due to inclem-ent weather we were unable to fulfill our schedule. Playing the- leading Prep. Schools of Virginia and North Carolina, the outcome was very successful. It would be needless for me to give you further details of the season, more than to give you the high lights of the schedule. Taking a week trip to Richmond and meeting the leading Prep. School of that section. By defeating all of these teams we returned to sch l t l V' ' ' oo o p ay 1rg1n1a Episcopal School, claimants for the state championship. Meeting this team we defe t d th 44 ' ' r ' ' ' a e em to 0. We were in line for the championship, but being late in the season we were unable to compete with Fishburne Military School for the trophy. The prospects for this year's team looks good. With six letter men back, a winning team is expected. Our Track team of last year was one of the best teams that this school has ever produced. With Captain Diago leading the team, he proved to be a real leader and was also high-point man for the year. 81 3 11.M.As.,, b ' 41 . ' ORACLE 1 929 Y Our first meet 'was a triangular meet with Randolph-Macon Academy and Vir- ginia Episcopal School. It was held at the latter school in Lynchburg. This was one of the most interesting meets of the s-eason. This was the first and last defeat throughout the entire season for us. . Next, the team 'went to Randolph-Macon Academy and easily Won by a large score. Coach Towill showed his confidence in the team by carrying only nine men on this trip. His expectations were fulfilled, as the few men conquered nine out of thirteen first places and got more than their share in second and third. The following week a strong team from Lynchburg High journeyed here only to taste defeat by the Heet-footed cad-ets. Hargrave completely outclassed them in nearly every event. Later on in the season five men were picked to go to Charlottesville to 'enter into the State Interscholastic meet sponsored by the University of Virginia. These men made an exceptional good showing. ' C Closely following this meet, Coach Towill carried twenty men to Chapel Hill, sponsored by the University of North Carolina. In this meet the team upheld the past records by 'winning third place. ln closing, among the rats that are out for this Year's team, none have shone phenominally, but all consistently. We still have the stellar performances of our four letter men back from last year, including Captain Lynn. l'XNx.gW6?mxmn is 'cz' to Wax?-Qy A XQ g f' 5, 3.355 3 L sz-4 35324 .wi-S-sg? .. GOODE A GRA-CLE-1 , 9 av. y Military Review Much to the enthusiasm of the new men Cbetter known as uBats l school had been opened but a few days when first call for drill was heard. Before the ring had left their ears most of the uBats were already in line and waiting for the next event. N ' 'h ot so.w1t the old men because one could read regret across their faces, but at the same time, duty 1S duty and they knew it The eagerness of th . - y D e new men was some- what subdued when they found that they were not to get rifles then. They were a d' ' td b h ' - 1sappo1ne unc when they were told that rifles wouldn't be issued until the knowledge of squad and platoon drill was mastered With the abilit d d t n . . . . y an eer- mlnatlon of the commissioned and non-commissioned oliicers, and with the desire of the new me t ' ' n o possess a real army rifle, this part of the schedule was soon com- pleted and then came the order for rifles to be issued. For his fifth consecutive year, Captain B. J. Holt Jr is back as head of the Military department. With the approval of the President, he appointed as his assistants, Senior C t ' C. W ' ' ap a1n . Guerrant as Corps Commander. F 1rst Lieutenant H. W. Stephens, Second Lieutenants B. B. Chipman, T. M Halligan and P. C. Hailey Under the careful instruction of these officers and with a competent staff of non-coms, we soon had a cadet corps that could execute the movements very well. The new men were found to be trustworthy 'with the rifles and were enjoying this new life immensely. The old boys were glad of this too, because the continual instruction of the same things- was getting their patience, and too, they had been over all this last year and they didn't see any reason for doing it all over again. However, 'we have constantly improved and have an excellent unit. The office staff is composed of Captain Adiutant R. C. Fisher, First Lieutenant Ouarter-Master G. B. Purcell. Sergeant lVlaior W. H. Lynn, Company Clerk Sergeant H. D. Goode and Sergeants K. Turk and H. lVI. Tomlinson in charge of the armory. Color Sergeants, T. B. Westerman and W. N. Coles. The stud-ent body is especially proud of its rifle team which has won the third corps area match for the third consecutive year, which causes us to be the permanent possessor of the beautiful cup donated to the area by Colonel E. A. Deems, the Third Corps Area inspector. The success of our team is due to the coaching of Captain Holt, along with the assistance' of Lieutenant Purcell, Captain of the team and a few of the older men. As this goes to press the team is completing the final stages of the National match to gain another hold on the cup now being held tem- porarily. We hope to be as successful in this match as we were last year. We have had two informal inspections and have been recommended for a B. O. T. C. unit. The range firing is progressing nicely so far, the new men are showing up fine, but we can't tell so much about how the outcome w1ll be yet. Lieutenants Purcell and Hailey are in charge of this detail. As for the Band, we can say that Captain Patchel is a genius. because EIHYOYIC who can take a bunch of Greens like he had at the beginning of the year and turn 97 f WN gII, . f if ORACLE 1929 out a Band almost equal to the famed Sousa must be a genlus We hope that It Wlll be as good 1n the future Durmg our talk about the Band we would l1ke to compllment Captaln Patchel on h1S wonderful work 1n the lnstructlon of our Band H1s work 1n the Unlverslty of Pennsylvama band 1n h1s early study of muslc has caused hlm to turn out mus1c1ans that Hargrave 15 proud of Few people stop to thmk just what a m1l1tary school 1S and 1tS purpose Most people connect a m1l1tary academy w1th somethmg that mlght 1nst1l 1nto youth the deslre to cause war and to always want to fight Th1s 1S as far wrong as East IS from West and 1f you dont bel1eVe lt just notlce the manners of a Cadet You w1ll always find the Man 1n h1m A boy who attends a m1l1tary school abhors war but IS w1ll1ng to protect hls country 1n any way posslble 1f need be A good and approprlate word for m1l1tary IS truthfulness obed1ence patr1ot1sm and a love for everythlng wh1ch IS r1ght If one enqulres he Wlll Hnd that the great men of our country recommend the m1l1tary schools to parents There 1S more to m1l1tary than merely dr1ll there 1S the theoretlcal s1de of lt The teachmg of m1l1tary 1n class by the Commandant and Cadet oflicers lVI1l1tary classes are held regularly and lessons are ass1gned from the lVI1l1tary manuals tests are glven and suHic1ent grades are requ1red lVI1l1tary IS belng pushed forward more each year by the Faculty There was a t1me when the Faculty cons1dered It as a mlnor branch IH the school but they have found that Mllltary 1S the makmg of the Sound mlnd and a sound body 1n the youth of today -kit '98 1 1 1 BUCUJK V Q Clubs and Organizations 92 I Q I P QK 4r'N xo 5 ' 4. + 4- H, N 5 u 4 if N Q l OIzAcI.E'1Q26 SR I f' MIPOHRRI Literary Ocietfy MOTTO: g'Eureka Forever OFFICERS FIRST TERBI SECOND TERM THIRD TERM J.
