This year the College has brought together professors and instructors from various parts of the United States as well as other countries. Scholars and educates, they are dedicated to;the pursuit of knowledge. A junior college faculty, however, must also be con- cerned with the individual students. Harford's teaches devote many hours to counseling students, advising ac- tivities, and participating in College events. They have made the friendly c 3 mp us a characteristic of Harfoni Junior College. Dr. Charming R. Kao Dedication Congratulations to Harford's first full professor! Associated with the College s i nc e 1957 and presently chairman of the Social Sciences Di- vision, Dr. Channing Kao has been a major force in creating the academic climate. Every recognized organiza- tion on campus has voting power in the Council. The Dean of Students, Mr. Kuhl, acts as the advisor for this group and relays the necesary faculty approval. General campus attitude and conduct, as well as special activities, are all governed by the Student Council. Student Government President of the College, Dr. Alfred C. The addition of patron ads strengthened the financial standing, and the use of spot color increased the attractiveness of the book. We hope THE 66 OWL is an adequate repre se nt a ti on of the 1965-66 year at Harford Junior College. Dr. Claire Eckels, Adviser Charles Wheeler, Editor . . . . . organization. Left to Right: Debbie Thomas Charles Wheeler Tom Fowler Bill Winship Beverly Spicer Owleye 1-13 Owlexe has changed its facade during the past year. It stirred needed controversy when it asked students through its editorial column whether or not they wanted the name of our football team changed. The feature column introduced reviews of plays and movies taking place both on the campus and in nearby areas. The sports column achieved a new height of interest among students by using interviews and personal sketches, and not just enumerating the won-lost aspects of the game. Under the direction of Mr. Roy Pipher, fie- Owleye has attempted to present a varied picture of campus life and to inspire more students to contribute to its pages. Mr. Edward Ross, Advisor Local folk singers perform at the coffeehouses. E Exit, a dramatic re ad i n g by The Rustic Set. Pat Herbert and Mike Campbell portray the tragic destruction of a family in Long Day's Journey Into Niqht. Pozo, Lucky, 6090, and Didi introduced their audiences to the Theatre of the Absurd. This was a year of firsts for the Dra- ma Society under the leadership of Mr. Edward Ross. Beginning in September, the group put on the first student-directed production, jig Can't Take Emm. In November comedy changed to tragedy with O'Neill's Egg- Day's Iournexlnig Night. Then, with the spirit of Christmas, the organization moved off campus to pre- sent a music a1 revue for the county schools for retarded children. In March another first was started in the exchange of plays with other junior colleges in the state. Waiting m Godot, directed by Mr. James H. Hopkins, was taken on tour to Essex and Catonsville Community Colleges. For the final per- formance of the year, the group turned once again to comedy in My Three Angels. Aside from the major play produc- tions, the Drama Society, also known as the Rustic Set, sponsored several coffee- houses. The first of these was a benefit for the People-to-People Scholarship Fund. The students were entertained by local folk singers, and the first Ugly Man was crowned. Adramatic reading of Jean- Paul Sartre's E E was presented at the second coffeehouse. Drama is also represented at Harford Junior College by Delta Psi Omega, a nationally recognized honorary dramatic fraternity. People To People The purp 05 e of People-to-People, an international organization, is to promot e better international relations. Last summer the chapter at HJC sponsored an ambassador who traveled extensively in Europe. Upon her return, Miss Charlotte Mason, now presi- dent of the club, addressed both students and surrounding communities. This year another student will be sent to live and travel abroad. Last year's student ambassador and current president, Charlotte Mason, presented a program of her travels in Europe. Miss Macris, Adviser; David Rodefer, V. Chessmales The Chessmates started the season with the annual Ten Second Tournament in September. Next, the Harford County Open was held on December 11 and 12. The Chessmates began the new year with several members going to the Penn State Tournament, which was held in February. During the entire season, the Chessmates have ladder play among themselves and close the year with their annual dinner. Wm suruinuwot M! i A mm IN A. Sutherland, D. Thomas, Mr. Housum, R. Heaps, K. With considerable enthusiasm, the team did quite well. Under the direction of Mrs. James Vivian, the team hopes to be- come an integral part of campus activity. This sport along with basketball, baseball, and golf has increased student participation in the overall sports program. The increased participation has not only aided the athletic standing of the College, but has also provided an op- portunity for physical and mental development of the students. w: 45 Football New to the campus athletic program this year was the addition of intercollegiate football. Even though the won-loss record was not impressive, the team's spirit and fighting drive prevailed throughout the season. Under the direction of Coaches John Ca11,John Nichols, and Richaxd O'Connell, the team played some of the toughest com- petition in the State. With last season's experience, re- turning freshmen, and high school prospects, Harf ord '5 second season promises to give competitors even stronger opposition. I thought you were on our side? This year the Harford Junior Owls completed one of their finest basketball seasons with an overall record of 8 wins and 12 losses. Coach Nichols and the entire team are to be commended for their performance this year. Their Win-lose percentage might not have been so im- pressive, but their team improvement record stood at 20 and 0. Although the team started with seven consecutive losses, it went on to win 8 of the next 14 games. The tension of the game reflects in the faces of Coaches Nichols and Martin. With the pitching ability of Jack Hillesland and Jay Tobin and the coaching of Pilot Wayne Housum, the team produced a surprising upset of the University of Maryland. This year's team promises an even greater winning season. Ron Cole slides into third. Hillesland winds up for a fast ball. on. Jay Tobin warms up for the game against the University of Baltimore. Our team, with a 10-3 recoxd won the Tri-State Champion- ship, and Scott Bailey won the individual champion- ship for the tournament. Bailey went on to place fifth in the regional and fifteenth in national competition. The Harford team has the advantage of practicing at the Maryland Golf and Country Club, which has one of the finest courses in the State. In their favor, also is the able coaching of Mr. John Nichols. This year's team has two sophomores and three freshmen who have racked up a 5-7-1 record. The Great Pyramid Left to Right: P. Smith, C. The program in the past has been one exclusively oriented to basketball and the type of cheers that go with it. This year, with the new football team, the girls went through a mad scramble to learn cheers appropriate to that sport, and in the end wound up doing a fine job. 53 Cheerleaders . . . Would you believe 40 to 0? l Homecoming '65 This year's footb all season was highlighted by the crowning of the first annual Homecoming Queen. As each year passes, the seed grows and matures until it reaches its height. At this height, the seed which has now become an intricate organism puts forth its greatest contribution to society.
